Happy to see the way MF and his team responded. I thought they may come out flat with no fight. Glad I was wrong, offense is still a head scratcher and needs fixed fast. Al Golden is a great coach and hopefully a great mentor to MF. The recruits that were there last night had to have been blown away! Nice win boys.

I get what you are saying but you have all time great coaches who don't always get it done. Freeman isn't a finished product and is learning and I have faith that he will make this team a real contender. I'd rather ride with Freeman and see him grow with where he is now and the wins he's had so far then have Kelly where you know you will never win it all

I think that’s my hope as well, but hiring Parker was a huge mistake and it cost us this year, don’t double down

It absolutely was a mistake, but it also wasn't his first, or second choice. Colin Klein and Andy Ludwig both were our primary targets for OC, not Parker. When the combination of the AD being tight with the pursestrings and the candidates getting cold feet happened, we had to go back to the drawing board. It wasn't a great solution and I hope we don't double down on it, but it's not like Freeman didn't try to go out.

I thought the argument was people wanting to retain him and allow him to hopefully improve on the job, that I strongly disagree with. Don’t want him to learn by making moronic mistakes, instead hire a great OC and let him learn under him

There is blame to go around. Freeman should not have hired Parker even after the Ludwig episode but focused on hiring someone with more experience. But the "cold feet" thing was caused by Swarbrick. If ND initially refused to pay, and then Ludwig got cold feet even though ND later agreed to pay, it's still Swarbrick's fault. Your job is to sign the checks. (On the front.) Unless the buyout was truly insane and completely out of the ordinary (I don't know, 20 million or something) this should not have even been a question.

The whole thing was so unbelievably low rent -that Swarbrick and Powlus are vetoing coaching hires- that I can't really be too angry at Freeman, even though he also screwed up.

I absolutely loved the shot of Hartman walking off the field into the locker room and immediately running into Joe Montana and giving him a giant hug. That's the kind of alumni relations that make our program shine that we didn't have under BK.

Notre Dame is lucky to have Freeman- the love and appreciation he shows for Notre Dame, he is going to get a lot of wins at ND; I think he will break Kelly's record.

He has also gained respect from the alumni.

The program is in good hands with Freeman.

I think some of that went back to Montana’s kid, who was our third or fourth string QB in 2010.

I don’t know details obvs but I’d imagine that could be a complicated situation for all involved. Especially if, say, you thought your kid, a senior, should play after Dayne Crist got hurt, instead this noodle-armed freshman from Lake Forest.

You're remembering it correctly. Montana effectively said that he wouldn't be around the program as long as BK coached during the lead up to the Navy game this year.

It was actually the first game I’ve seen at Notre Dame since the Bush Push game and the atmosphere was terrific. The school has done a wonderful job with the game day experience. We are NOT i repeat NOT trying to do what Jim harbaugh has done at michigan. Not sure what he means by getting them to great vs good. Harbaughs track record isn't even as good as Kelly's was at ND. Harbaugh has had 2+ losses every year at michigan but 1, never got to a championship game. ND's goal is to win a championship and then compete for them every year.

We want to accomplish more so what Dabo has done at clemson (but just stay up with the times), and have the ultimate goal like kirby at georgia (might not be possible).

Also, he's comparing Freeman to Harbaugh and is asking if Freeman can take ND from "very good to great" like Harbaugh has? GTFO! Harbaugh has had a Charmin soft schedule the last 2 seasons, in addition to the fact that Ryan Day is living off the fumes of Urban Meyer at this point. It's the only reason Harbaugh has gotten to the playoff in back to back years only to get embarrassed both times. They lost to a TCU team that got prison sexed by Georgia 65-7! Freeman probably would have been in the playoff this year too if he had Michigan's schedule...and maybe any other OC.

Yeah, the comment section of this article pretty much went the same direction that you guys are going. There is no chance in hell that what Michigan has is the goal for ND - we have already achieved that.

Joe Montana has come out swinging against Notre Dame because of their treatment of his son Nate who left the college last year.

Nate transferred from Notre Dame to Montana after being made a back up quarterback last year amid rumors of a falling out with coach Brian Kelly.

Nate briefly saw first team action against Michigan but never featured again.

Montana, the legendary Fighting Irish and San Francisco 49ers quarterback, is clearly still feeling the pain of his son's premature departure.

At a luncheon in Rochester New York he was asked whether he would ever become Athletic Director at Notre Dame

“You’re asking me at absolutely the wrong time.” he told the questioner

“What happened with my son and the reasons for leaving Notre Dame shouldn’t happen to any kid,’’ he said. “At this point in time, it’s hard to be in their corner.’’
