But winning a playoff game against a top 12 team is not the same as winning a playoff game against a top 4. And that’s not even including that top 4 teams are not what they used to be either. 2012 Bama, 2018 Clemson, and 2020 Bama would destroy this field of teams. The game is about parity which makes the bar lower. Great for ND but in no way an apples to apples comparison.

But we never even came close to beating a top 4 team.

It is not the same, but a playoff win against a top 12 team is something we haven’t seen in 30 years (winning a bowl type game with NC implications).

Beating a top 12 team when it matters most is infinitely more impressive than just showing up to get your teeth kicked in by a top 4 team.

I think the implication is he gets a longer leash on the recruiting trail like Holtz did for a few “special exceptions” every cycle, and legit underclassmen transfers, not grad transfers.

Wisconsin and Iowa had a decade of finding and developing kids and winning with them. That simply isn’t enough to win the big games.

With all due respect, ND is not Iowa and Wisconsin whose entire recruiting class is lower ceiling kids and “find and develop” type kids. NDs baseline is substantially higher, whether consistently top 10 or not..

Making the playoff this year was the absolute bare minimum against our weak ass schedule. we shouldn’t be coronating freeman for doing what any of us could have done against this schedule this year. win in the playoffs, silence the haters and earn the extension

I'm a big Freeman fan but agree that simply hosting a playoff game is not in and of itself some amazing feat. It just means we finish in the top eight, which BK did five times in his 12 years ('12, '15, '18, '20, '21). If we host and lose in the first round (except maybe to like Georgia) I suspect a lot of us would be disappointed.

If we win a playoff game, and especially if we win two or more, that's a different story.

Regardless, no extensions until the last game is played. Doing otherwise is bad for business. I'd be very surprised if Freeman would push for an extension while the season is still underway, TBH.

I agree it should come after the last game is played but It needs to happen. If you haven’t paid attention since the NIU game this team is in a completely different space. This is the strongest mental team we have seen from ND is a long time. I agree that the recruiting needs to get a little better. Agree, but the idea that simply developing and coaching the guys we do get isn’t going to cut it.

To break through to the next level, the recruiting trail will need some significant wins.

This is the strongest mental team we have seen from ND is a long time. I agree that the recruiting needs to get a little better. But Freeman and staff have this team in the right spot and are doing it the right way.

For sure. Most years, after something like NIU, the wheels come off at some point mid-season. This year we've been locked in week after week. And from both a schematic perspective (which is coordinators, but also Freeman hiring good ones and letting them cook) and from the perspective of having depth ready to contribute when front-line players go down, this season's one of the most impressive coaching jobs I can remember at Notre Dame.
Freeman has earned an extension, I just don't want us to do anything rash/premature, especially if/when there's no smoke of him actually going anywhere. Nor anything that would signal taking a foot off the gas while the season is still underway.
