Major Program (Oregon) In Hot Water

That girl at ND years ago that paid $25 and was considered a representative of the university - there was no exchange of serious money but it still cost ND two scholarships. Or have ethics changed that much in the intervening years?

Oregon is caught red-handed, so the "bury your head in your sand and wait for the commissioner to make it go away" routine SEC schools use ain't happening here.

They are taking the opposite out-spoken approach, decreeing the legitimacy of this payment.

What's fishy:

1) They flat-out lied all week, saying "we have no idea of an NCAA investigation" while it was going on
2) The payment was filed under "Books, Publications, and other Ref." If this recruiting service is so legit, then why are you burying the payment in that category?
3) An article on SI today said that the most expensive "ALL-INCLUSIVE" package this recruiting service offers on their website is only $8,000. Why did they feel the need to tip Lyles $17,000?

It simply doesn't add up.

"... Caught red handed" with what? Which NCAA regulation did they break?

1) NCAA protocol requires a member be furnished a written notice that an investigation will be made. IF Oregon had not received a letter then their response was according to protocol.
2) They put reference material under "Ref" and paid for it with a University check not cash from a slush fund.
3) Again which NCAA reg did they violate? Is it forbidden to buy reference material or how much they can pay for it? I'll hazard a guess that all of SI's services aren't listed on their website. That doesn't make it illegal nor even unethical.

Now if something turns up, is it going to be another situation where the kids have the option to transfer, ala USC, to other schools??

No, NCAA regs specify that only 9 position coaches and the head coach can recruit. They have to take a written test and be certified by the NCAA.

Under Holtz, Vinny Cerrato was a full time recruiter. The NCAA changed their regs in the early 1990's eliminating the possibility of a recruiting specialist by limiting recruiting to the field coaches only. Longo is on Kelly's coaching staff but can not recruit. "Recruiting" is defined by the NCAA regs and specifies the type of contact that can be made with a recruit.

Apples and oranges.

Dunbar was ruled a "booster" by the NCAA on the basis of the $25 mailing list fee for The Quarterback Club. The loss of scholarships was due to extra benefits to student athletes provided by a booster. It was a tenuous connection. Dunbar was a serial groupie that gave presents (video camera, watch, etc) to her athlete boy friend of the year.

As a consequence of that case anyone donating funds to a school or buying a ticket comes under the "booster" role.

When Demetrious Dubose left home to attend ND, a family friend gave him a winter coat for South Bend winter's. When the ND coaches learned that the family friend was an ND alumnus they reported it to the NCAA. Dubs was given a one game suspension for an extra benefit from a booster.

Therein lies the problem. Oregon went too far abusing a legal service, but as you argue, who or what determines what is too far? I doubt they get much heat for this in the end, but you are asking for trouble when you give a notorious street agent a $17,000 "tip" and he takes one of your commits (Lache Seastrunk) on trips to Vegas.

*I (and I'm sure the NCAA) simply don't understand why they paid a guy an extra $17,000 if it was all well within the rules.

*Wouldn't Oregon have received a letter before the NCAA came this week to investigate?

just something for espn to sucker people into tuning in.

The NCAA is exploring, it's not even an investigation. If there amazingly results in a punishment, it will be insignificant.

Can the thread name change to "Ducks in the luke warm bath tub"? I'm not feeling any hot water.

Interesting article... but when you break it down it can be encapsulated in this one sentence: "Oregon paid a guy more money than other schools paid a guy and they all got players."

I just don't see how it "sticks" when on the surface it is all by the books.

I'm having a hard time understanding why such a big deal was made about this before the story broke and seeing how this is going to cripple Oregon's program. I'm sure they may be in violation of a couple of rules, technically, but this does not seem to be that big of a deal. I'm sure many programs do much worse. This is just the way recruiting works now.

Precisely. At worst they get slapped with a schollie reduction and probation... maybe some minor recruiting restrictions. Crippling? Can't see it.

With all of the smoke I was literally expecting there to be a check for 6 figures to the "Black Mamba" from Phil Knight.
