Lou Holtz on immigrants: "I don't want to celebrate your holidays, I sure as hell don't want to cheer for your soccer team"— Betsy Woodruff (@woodruffbets) July 19, 2016

If he was still with ESPN, how long would it have taken before they fired him for such "insensitive" remarks? 5 seconds?

Snopes dot com' is a lot different than 'the Internet.' There are a few sites on the Internet where you can take their research to the bank. Snopes is one of them. If you check their source references, they are complete, impeccable, and unbiased (unvarnished, with out agenda.)

Snopes has been proven an unreliable source numerous times. Although I agree with the unbiased part, the "taking it to the bank" part is far too trusting IMO.

Snopes is literally a married couple using search engines to prove or debunk an urban legend. Not exactly scientific or rock solid reliable. The "proof" they used in quite a few instances is nothing more than what someone else said on the Internet.

This was more common early on, and they have taken a more professional approach since the site is huge now, but let's not kid ourselves, unless you are 100% sure because you personally saw it, don't trust it 100%.

Now people are getting mad that Holtz said he "doesn't want to celebrate immigrnst's holidays"... which is actually totally politically correct (anti-cultural appropriation) but being spun as "racist" because it happened at RNC.

Pretty much, when someone inevitably says something like this at the DNC or the like, no one will even blink at it.

I’m going to hear Coach Holtz speak tomorrow at my alma mater. I figure I won’t have too many opportunities to catch him so I’m glad I pulled the trigger.

Awesome! He was born a river and a few miles away from where I was raised. I still haven't had the chance to see him live. Please give an update after.

BTW. They are building a bridge as we speak to connect my home town to his birthplace.

He was the speaker at my senior sports banquet years ago. He was great and was still the coach at N.C State then. I can't imagine hearing him now. Enjoy!!

I got a great story, a bit of a brag maybe, but too good not to share. My freshman year, I knew one of my good friends knew Lou's grandson who is in our class at ND. They're both from the Orlando area. My friend told us that Lou would be coming into town and offered to take his grandson, my friend, and both of their friends to a dinner. My friends and I were all under the assumption that this would be some big event probably where Lou keynoted. The day before the dinner, my friend got a text from Lou's grandson saying that his maternal grandmother passed away and that he would not be able to go, but that we were still welcome to go to dinner. The next day we show up at Parisi's, and Lou walks up to my friend and gives him a big old hug telling him how he missed him. Turns out my friend's dad is really close friends with Lou, and we ended up having a dinner with Lou and the five of us. Best part was halfway through, Lou turns to us and says, "You guys won't believe I didn't plan this, but Ara is here" so we all got a group picture with Ara and Lou. One of the craziest lucky things that's ever happened to me

That’s great. Thanks for sharing. My buddy got a pic w/ Lou in an airport. Another friend was sitting next to him on a plane. He pretended to be sleeping & then was grumpy about some distractions. Once he realized my friend wasn’t going to harrass him, he lightened up and was cordial. Poor guy was probably worn out from traveling and being “on” all the time.

Great job by Coach Holtz. He was what we all expect him to be. There were very few jokes, adages, wisdom or stories I hadn’t heard but to see & hear him life made it that much better.

Auditorium on campus was sold out. I suspect a majority of attendees were diehard Hog fans. I truly believe they gained a newfound love & respect for Holtz after listenting to him wax poetic about his days on the Hill and his breakup w/ Arkansas. He handled the story of his firing w/ grace & class as well as respect for AD Frank Broyles who fired him. His wife urged him not to be bitter (Lou said he was mad b/c Broyles never really gave him a reason for letting him go) and Holtz followed her sage advice. It paid dividends years later when Gene Corrigan (AD at ND) called Broyles to get the scoop on their parting of ways. Broyles simply said that he knows no one who loves ND more than Holtz and that he should end the search now b/c Holtz is his best choice.

At the end, 12 former Razorbacks got on stage to greet their old coach. It was pretty cool as most of them were on that great 1977 team that upset Oklahoma after being the biggest underdog in major bowl history. IMO, that’s still the greatest win in Razorback football history. The ex-players included former QBs Ron Calcagni & Kevin Scanlon as well as DL Jimmy Walker (whose son Darius played at ND). The most known ex-player was former RB Gary Anderson who went on to star in the USFL & NFL He still looked like he could play.

Holtz memory is impreccable as he remembered minute details of each player who greeted him on stage. I believe he’s 82 y/o now but he still looks exactly the same although his knees looked a bit hobbly. He’s an American gem.

I know we’re all homers as ND fans but I can attest that his words of wisdom were well received by all in attendance. They weren’t political or controversial...just common sense adages that have been forgotten by most of us. I wish I could’ve recorded it to play back.

I've seen him live, got to shake his hand, etc.. He's just a lovable, good dude. Hard to hate on Lou.

Lou is awesome. I don't remember all the details since I wasn't there, but my family went over to Hawaii for the game in '91. Gramps is a big Lou fan, and while in the hotel lobby my uncles spotted Lou and his entourage. They got in touch with his assistant as Lou was walking off to do some press, and they asked if they could get Lou to meet Gramps. They told him to meet back in the lobby at a certain time and Lou would be there. Sure enough, Lou got the message. They said he left some engagement early, and my grandpa was in for a surprise.

Lou shook his hand, and they got a picture of the meeting which Gramps keeps in his office. They spent quite a bit talking, mostly about the team and the stadium. There was talk about the stadium expansion even at that time (Wouldn't be formally decided and announced for another 3 years) and he suggested the premium seating and some other ideas. I'm sure that idea was already being considered, but the bottom line is that Lou took Gramp's contact information and he ended up getting season tickets in those new Gold seats starting in '97. We held those same seats until 2017 when the university started squeezing the Gold seats for more cash, he gave them up after that. There was also a matter of disrespect stemming from his new university rep, but I won't get into that. Sadly, I've seen opposing fans in those seats on two occasions since we relocated to the bleachers, one such game being the Georgia game.

Aside from the picture he has shaking Lou's hand, Gramps also has one with Lou and the whole family. Lou also confided in him that Notre Dame had just offered him a new 5 year deal that week, which is something the university had not done in a long time (Contracts were generally shorter back then). That news wasn't going to hit the presses until a week later, December 6th according to an old Chicago Tribune online article. In any case, Lou was awesome to take time out and meet with the family, and it was one of Gramps' favorite moments as a fan.

That’s great...thx for sharing. At the end of his speaking, he took Q&A from the audience. Several people, both male & female, thanked him for writing them a letter in a time of distress or for being inspired by his books. He didn’t turn down any autograph or photo requests while on stage...and you know that stuff gets old for any celebrity.

a Lou story: Back in the nineties when Lou was coach, I had a patient from southern Indiana who had travelled to Northwest Indiana for a Notre Dame football game. Although he never went to ND, he tried to come to one game every year. He would stay with friends in Valpo and go to the game the following day. Anyway, that year he developed a serious surgical problem and would up in an operating room and not South Bend. Over the next couple day I got to know this gentleman and understood how upset he was at missing the game. On a lark I called ND and asked to be put through to Lou Holtz. Lou's secretary put me thru to him, didn't even ask why I was calling. I explained to Lou about my patient and how he was a ND fan. Lou asked for his name and address. A year later the patient came by my office to show me the letter Lou had sent him. Thanked him for being a fan and wished him well. The patient had framed the letter. A couple of years ago, his daughter came by my office to tell me he had died. Told me one of his most prized possessions was the letter. Says something about his character that he took the time to write the letter.

Lou is a big Trump supporter. Did you see his RNC speech where he called Biden a Catholic in name only. Glad to see someone call a spade a spade.

I think you now have your answer.
