LOU HOLTZ WILL NOT RETURN TO ESPN
ESPN statement: "Lou brought a champion's perspective and a legacy of accomplishment to our coverage along with his distinctive style and humor. We appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best in the future."

I haz a sad.

If only if he would take Mark May's dumb ass with him!

Honestly, I think he'd be good if ESPN didn't have them putting on that little act. Hoping this spells an end to it.

I haven't watched in a couple years but I thought this for a long while,... I love Lou, but he made a cartoon of himself on ESPN... As does May...

Yep. When it came to ND, each said something stupid, then they argued over the stupid things they said.

Now Lou can spend weekends in the fall playing golf at Augusta. After October 31 that is.

Thank you merciful God. He was painful and at times embarrassing to watch.

I love Lou...he goes out and gives himself to whatever endeavor he is engaged in. I didn't like the ESPN product, but man he totally went with it...at least the times I saw the May- Holtz dance.

I like seeing him...I hope someone brings him in regularly to do real analysis...

Problem is that May NEVER got the shade thrown at him the way Lou did, even in 2012 when May picked against ND every single week.

Also did not help that people associated his lisp with being stupid, even with all his accomplishments at the college level.

Which is too bad, but shows how shortsighted people actually are about people who have actually made something of themselves, like Lou did.

You bite your tongue. Lou Holtz is not a cartoon! He is a brave and a decent man. He is a pioneer!

Eroneous! Eroneous! Eroneous on both counts!

You'll get your wish. Kind of hard to continue the schtick if Lou's not there.

Very curious to see if Mark May actually gives some honest ND analysis now when given the chance, or if he'll have to continue the "against ND no-matter what" thing regardless of who steps in.

I felt that there were times over the past few seasons where May actually had good insight, but had to role with the anti-Lou views. It was also becoming more and more obvious that May was getting disenchanted with the act.

May, Holtz, Davis all gone from "Final".

Replaced by Adnan Virk, Joey Galloway and Danny Kanell.

Joey Galloway is pretty good, Danny Kanell is ok, don't know Virk. Seems from afar this is just another "3-talking heads and a highlight clip".

Say what you will about the Davis, Holtz, May theatrics...but it had some funny moments, and some good analysis. I love how people only remember Lou's homerism...when May and holtz had serious moments they were good football heads. The new crew lack depth and breadth of perspective...always need a coach in one chair IMHO.

No doubt. It was especially fun when Lou would jump all-over Mark for being stupid for no reason other than shock value. And there was plenty of good analysis...

However, the problem I had is that the Notre Dame analysis was always lacking. Mark would be overly critical without touching on anything of true substance, and Lou would talk about how good of a team ND is and how they were going to turn it on and play clean that week. There was never much depth to the different aspects of ND's team that got touched on.

I trust Galloway and Kanell to provide some ACTUAL analysis, and not just play the shock-jock love-hate ND thing. That is, unless the powers at ESPN ask for it to continue.

Side-note: David Pollack can be annoying and an SEC-homer, but when he gives analysis, regardless of who it is, he actually does a good job. He always goes in-depth and provides quality insight when he talks ND. I like him despite his flaws. I wish he had a bigger role.

There's just WAY too much schtick and obvious scripting (producer: hey, you take this side, and then you take the opposite side, and just argue, OK? The audience will love it!), as well as too much fake hahahaha laughter/banter on all these shows, across pretty much every network.

Ask any soccer fan, and the best sports show on any channel is the one NBC Sports puts on for their Premier League telecasts. No fake arguments, no fake laughter and BS...just straight analysis and stories from excellent analysts (and Rebecca Lowe is a rock-star that keeps the show running so smoothly) that hardcore fans of any sport truly want. It's awesome, and watching it makes me pissed that we have nothing like it for college football (or pro, for that matter).

ESPN could learn a TON from the producers of that show...

And borrowing from soccer again for a second, I'm not sure there is any better "comedy analysis" than Men in Blazers. Ironically, their podcast started on ESPN's own Grantland but they're now primarily a television fixture on NBCSN.

Grantland is -- by far -- the best thing ESPN has produced in a long time.

Absolutely love Men In Blazers. I was a "GFOP" years ago. Huge get for NBCSN. But they're not just on TV...they're actually doing even more podcasts now than they did for Grantland.

NBC's hockey crew is real good as well.

Totally, wholeheartedly, 100%, agree with these posts. I grew up primarily a basketball and football fan. I now follow hockey and soccer more closely than any other sports (other than college football), and the fact that the NBC Sports coverage of those sports is vastly superior to anything on ABC/ESPN/FOX/CBS has a lot to do with that. When I'm watching a sports news or review show, I just want the news, the highlights, and a little analysis from someone with greater knowledge and experience of the sport than I have. I don't want theater or drama in my sports news. I find Sportscenter and a lot of the NFL and NBA studio shows on all networks unwatchable these days.
