He's either one of the most 100% standup dudes out there to not be fighting this for the sake of not causing a distraction, or there is more to this story.

And I'm not even saying he's done other things wrong... maybe this is a convenient parting opportunity between him and Venables for some reason? Maybe he's been looking for an out?

Idk, but one word erasing 25 years of time and good will seems crazy heavy-handed.
I'm with you. More to it or Venables wanted an excuse to get rid of a beloved figure? Something along those lines?

I'm reasonably woke on a lot of topics, but I just think this environment of "make one brain fart and YOUR CAREER IS OVER" is ridiculous. Who is actually helped by him resigning? Not him. Not the players. Not his family. Tell me one actual person whose life is appreciably better from the admin forcing him to resign.
Marcus Freeman if it means we get more WR wins on the trail. Lol.

All bull shitting aside, great point. He made a mistake that we know of, no need to ruin it for everyone if this indeed is an isolated honest mistake.

It’s funny that Hollywood is driving the woke, but I recall so many woke actors using derogatory words in movies. Ever seen Django? Ever seen Tropic Thunder? It’s going to be fun watching them cannabalize one another for movies they made 20 years ago.
What’s even more funny is people care about an actor’s opinion like they don’t put on their pants one leg at a time too…

But hey, Whoopi Goldberg is a scholar.

Truly ridiculous. There’s a huge difference between reading what’s a screen and not self-censoring the content fast enough, and using the N word of your own volition.
I'm not sure how anyone's brain isn't capable of seeing the N word coming up and *immediately* pulling the ripcord. That should be a sixth sense for most people.

Freedom of speech should never get a person fired. Deliberately doing and saying things that bring issues to your employer when you know it is an issue should be met with counseling before termination. In other words, you get your one written warning. If it turns into an issue, then you dig your own grave.

If you say and do things that are deliberately racist an organization has every right to fire you because that makes you a racist tool. However, context matters.

I agree in most circumstances but what about reading a primary source? What about a movie actor? Are you in favor of hiding the long history of abuses by whites over blacks by pretending whites didn’t or do not still use that word? Would you be in favor of making a high school or college history class PG and deleting the N word from books? You can’t ban a word and teach about racism. Have you yourself ever said or read that word aloud? Be honest now!

Well as long as universities continue to be safe place for free speech and exchange of ideas, no matter how incongruent those ideas are with my own views.....

I've never said the word or read the word aloud. It isn't difficult.

That’s good. What percent of people do you think have? Also, you didn’t answer the question. Should it be banned from history class, movies, documentaries on the civil rights era, books? Should we not read primary sources?

100% agree but it has to go both ways and all ways.

Merits of the action that led to his resignation aside, is there a worse possible time to lose your position coach?

I'm not other people, so I can't answer that question. I can answer it for me, which is zero, because it's hurtful to people in my context as a white man.

And no, it should not be banned from a historical context. You don't have to say the word to teach its historical significance.

The hard "r" claims another scalp.
Absolutely does. There will be more details to leak soon. I think we all need to understand the entire context before placing judgement on this one.

What we do know at this point is that a lot of black players are coming out in his defense. Some may have the whole story, others may not. But that bolds well for him I think.

There are few states less woke than Oklahoma, and few football programs less inclined to fire a long-time coach over something like this than OU. There's definitely more to this story than we're hearing.

Yep. There's a lot of context here we don't have, clearly. That could cut any one of a variety of ways.

Is the guy that was nailing the monkey stripper still employed? If so, there is 110% more to this than just the N word.

Got to be more to the story than what’s been put out. I’ll defer until more facts come out.

I’m guessing he won’t have too much trouble getting a job at Ok. State if he wants?

Reminds me when a Chicago City Councilman complained that the budget being contemplated was too niggardly and he was impeached from office.

In my experience, August is worse than midseason, so I'd say no. This can depend on program situation, culture, etc. but under normal circumstances summer preseason camp is about as worse as it gets for losing a staff member.

Perhaps worth noting. What he described doing - taking the iPad of a player who apparently wasn’t paying attention in a meeting and proceeding to read aloud what was on the screen - is the sort of move that is designed to humiliate the player. That may be part of this as well.

If that were the case I could only imagine what the coach would say to the player when he whiffed on a block that got the QB put on his butt.

I certainly hope not. This is football, not Candyland. That player is being gifted an education to pay attention to coach and he also has a responsibility to his teammates to do so.
