It does get obsessive, someone on here literally started a RIP thread for celebrities. Crazy.

How were you when Paul Bryant died? Will you be sad when Saban passed or will it just be another person passing away to you?

Simply recognizing the passing of someone famous and discussing how their life impacted yours, or feeling a reasonable amount of sorrow over their passing is normal. I'm criticizing the over-the-top, hysterical, hyper-emotional, "I need 3 days off to grieve and binge tweet about it because I'm heartbroken & devastated and need to carry flowers to the candlelight vigil" reaction to the death of some celebrity you didn't know. Normal people don't live vicariously through celebrities nor have that much of their identity wrapped up in John Lennon, Princess Diana, Kobe Bryant, or any other celebrity they have no actual relationship with.

I took a week off when Burt Reynolds died.

I also mourned the closing of Borders Books, as after all, corporations are people.

Whenever the McRib leaves, I get really sad, but I know that it'll be back down the line. I hate Shamrock Shakes, though.

Most underrated post of the decade. I was delighted to award you with a rep and I'm stingy with em.

I've cried the past 2 days and I know that's irrational because I didn't even know him. These anecdotes that are coming out that have been held in privacy until now are killing me and I've started to ignore them and only read the fun/funny ones. Here's one I hadn't heard before.

Did you hear Lou Williams' story where the Lakers got blown out in Portland and Kobe took away everyone's Kobe sneakers because they were too soft to wear them? How perfect is that, lol.

I have three daughters and I'm the same age as Kobe. To hear Gianna was on board hit me incredibly hard.

I was also aware, prior to his death, the things he was doing for women's sports during his retirement and how he embraced having four girls despite not having a son.

I can really relate to be a Girl Dad.

I don't think it's irrational to cry over the death of a person whom you didn't personally know beyond what you saw on TV, etc. Life is precious and certain people have bigger impacts on the world than others. You knew Kobe to the extent that we all "know" public figures. And sometimes that's enough to form a connection. Social media has only strengthened that connection for some celebs who use it to allow fans a glimpse into their personal lives.

The stories coming out about Kobe actually make me wish I knew about them while he was alive. As I mentioned earlier, I was never a huge fan of his as a bball player, but as a person, I would've cheered for him pretty hard had I known even a fraction of the type of person he really was.

A story that I saw get passed around yesterday was one about a dying child wanting Kobe's autograph. Kobe instead arranged to show up at his hospital room and play some bball with him, take photos, autograph some stuff, and then offered to pay his medical bills. Evidently, Kobe did stuff like that all the time and said he didn't want the PR notoriety from it, so no one reported his good deeds.

Same. So sad about Gigi. #girldad

I wish more people took the time to learn about Kobe's advocacy for women's sports, special Olympics, and other charity work he was involved in.

And I wish people realized this "multimillionaire flying around in a personal helicopter" was doing so ENTIRELY because he wanted to have more time with kids and less time being stuck in LA traffic. Per his own words, Kobe missed ONE after school play because of traffic and that was enough to make a decision towards a helicopter. After that, he was able to take his kids to school, do his work at the gym, and still get back in time to pick them up from school every single day that he wasn't on a road trip with the team.

It's gonna be hard for me when Hank Aaron passes on... I've been kind of mentally preparing myself for some time.

I think one of the biggest losses is losing Kobe the father. I'm sure those of us who are fathers quickly understand how important that role is. IMO, many of our societal issues revolve around the loss of having two parents in a child's life (don't want this to go political). I give single parents a ton of credit for how difficult it can be.

Kobe seemed to love being a dad and was a great role model in that regard. Don't always get that with athletes.

100%

I'm still pissed about Wingman Ray's ridiculous post yesterday. Beyond ignorant. Wanted to make a point towards his helicopter comment.

he was also dedicating tons of resources into creating stories about kids from less fortunate backgrounds finding success through sports and teamwork.

I think we can all agree there arent enough of these positive characters for those demographics.

Kobe Bryant isnt a hero and it's all a bit much. A tragedy, sure. I'm more saddened by the entire family that was wiped out on board.

Kobe was a great basketball player, fabulously wealthy and famous. He was in a position to retire young and get to see all of his daughters practices and games. He loved his children. Good, he's supposed to. You think he's the only man to ever have a daddy's girl?

Gasp. I'm not a celebrity worshipper. It's sad and it's tragic that nine people lost their lives in a helicopter crash. He's not a hero. The diver who died saving those children from an underwater cave last year is a hero. So we're the other divers.

Do you even know about all the things he's done for others with his money? Do you know that he helped a bunch of victims in a very bad traffic accident not long ago and that he's fulfilled more make a wish requests than any other celebrity? No, you didn't, because he didn't want recognition for any of it. He may not be a typical American hero, not he's helped far more people than I would bet every member of this website has, combined.

Guess it depends on your definition of hero.

Role model, hero, someone you look up to... It's all a different scope of thought from the man/woman themselves.
I hate to say this but it's oppression in it's finite form to label something you can't understand through your own scope of being.

Actually, Kobe did over 200 Make a Wish fulfillments, but John Cena surpassed Kobe some time ago. Cena has done over 580 as of 2018, he's over 600 now. I've got no idea what he's up to now. Supposedly Bieber is over 250 also. Not trying to trivialize what Kobe did, just impressed by Cena's dedication.

If you want to look up to a basketball player and have him as your role model, be my guest.

Most of us have our teenage idols, and then we grow up.

It's great that he did the children's miracle network. I'm not so sure why it's so great that he was a family man and loved spending time with his family. He's supposed to.

That's kind of what we all do when we, you know, get married and have children. Only he had hundreds of millions of dollars to lease helicopters and do whatever he wanted to do with his children.

I understand completely. I also understand that he packed 8 other people in a helicopter with him to fly in conditions that were so bad that government agencies grounded theirs. All so he wouldn't have to deal with traffic like the rest of us. Spare me the bullshit Circa

You're absolutely right. Most times kids are so abhorrently against their own parents that they need outside role models. Then they grow up and mommy and daddy give them credit, money and everything else some people never get...
Just takes some longer to be a mom or dad.

Let me start by saying Kobe didn't move the needle in either direction for me and his payoff to make the assault charge go way was very troubling. He probably wouldn't be able to do that today given today's climate. Having said that, it appears that he learned a valuable lesson from that incident and is very pretty caring person.

More to the point, if Kobe were just some super rich guy that hadn't become one of the top players ever to play in the NBA, this wouldn't have been as big of a story. Don't like the attention given to his death? Blame the media.

The lady and I were at the Mexican joint Sunday early afternoon watching the end of the IU/Maryland game. The place is busy, and I was in a foul mood watching the Hoosiers unravel/give the game away down the stretch.

That must have been when the news broke. I heard someone at the table next to us say something like..."OMG, Kobe Bryant is dead?!?!". Then I heard it from behind me and within seconds I swear every table in that establishment is talking about Kobe. It was like an uproar of sorts and kind of surreal. People were just in shock and it got quite the reaction. Myself personally – I was pissed that IU had lost, anyone who saw the end of that game knows what I mean. ☹ We got out of there asap and headed straight for a milkshake.

I was taken back though at how the whole restaurant seemed to react at the same time for the same thing. Don’t know I’ve ever witnessed anything like that.
