Anyone think BVG would get a shot at the job? Or is that a Bob Davies type hire?
I'd pass on BVG. He'd probably follow Kelly back to the NFL anyway.

Dan Mullen was a GA at Notre Dame in 1999-2000, just saying. Zaire in his offense would be neat.

I'd also be going after Charlie Strong with a blank check.

Don't take this the wrong way cause there's no one I'd rather have right now at ND, but BK would get hammered by fans for some of his play calling at the NFL level IMO. It's not his strength.

He might get hammered by casual fans, like those in Seattle. But, the guy has always called his own plays, and he is 214-72-2 as a Head Coach. Play Calling might not be a strength of his, but it sure as hell isn't a weakness.

+1 on Charlie Strong. Wait til Texas gets an consistent offense. Watch out.

wouldn't mind killing this thread. But lets talk realistic here

My top 2 favorites and a few other possibilities in my eyes

1) Dan Mullen
2) Tom Clements (Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator)
--Mike Gundy
--Kyle Whittingham
--Kliff Kingsbury, struggling this year, but I think he could excel will big time athletic. Plus I think he's a swagger hound.

Also, would never happen. But Mark Hudspeth can freakin' coach them Ragin' Cajuns down in Louisiana. He's up for a big time D1 job soon.

IIRC, BVG tried his hand at HC previously, and it didn't work out well. He's a DC, and (I hope) he knows it. It doesn't pay to get promoted beyond one's competency.

I doubt ND could afford to get into a bidding war with Texas for Strong.

ND stealing Graham would seriously test some of my closest relationships.
ND could afford to get in a bidding war but would never do it.

Normally I'd agree, but Texas is the only program in the nation that's more profitable than ours. If there's any place with pockets deep enough to out-bid us, it's UT.

And I agree we wouldn't even consider it, so probably not worth debating.

Just my two cents:

BK isn't going anywhere. He's worked his ass off getting us back where we belong and the ND HC job when we're relevant is better than any other HC job college or pro.

Obviously my top three choices would be:
-Urban Meyer
-Bob Stoops
-Jon Gruden

I don't think BK is going anywhere. Yeah from the outside we all think the "Frozen 5" crap is super annoying and I'm sure it bother BK to an extent but it's not like this is new for ND. He knew stuff like that could happen when he signed up for the job. I also think he wants to win a championship, just my opinion, before he leaves ND. People talk of him "wanting a new challenge" but hell ND is still a challenge, we're not all the way back to the top yet.

Troof. Lou talked about how it's all downhill after the NC, which is a part of why he left. I don't think Kelly will leave before the NC if he can get it done in the next 5 years. Few at ND last longer than that, championship or no.

How could any ND fan just brush off the theoretical departure of BK??? It only took us 14 years to find a coach who could bring the Irish back into the forefront of college football.

Considering Monk had 18 years to remove the wheels we're lucky to have in back on track now. No program tolerate can tolerate that much willful malfeasance.

I would be worried as well if Kelly's name wasn't being thrown around for potential job openings. He must be doing pretty well to have his name keep coming up. When his name stops coming up is the real time to be worried... that would mean he probably isn't getting it done.

Like others have said, Kelly is a great college football coach, but his strengths don't necessarily translate to the NFL.
He's not a scheme guy. He's not some brilliant in-game strategist. He's also doesn't appear to be a workaholic sociopath. He's just spent a quarter-century developing the systems that turn raw 18-year-old football players into polished 22-year-old football players. He's also very good at the politics of running of a high-profile program. That's a very different job than head coaching in the NFL.
I get why he might be frustrated with the administration, and why he might be tempted by the chance to try his hand at the pinnacle of the sport. But after he flirted with the Eagles and didn't go, I'd actually be more worried about him leaving for the University of Texas than the Houston Texans. And there aren't many of those Texas-type jobs to be had.

Now, if for some reason he were to leave: Dan Mullen. Butch Jones. Bert Bielema. Mark Dantonio. That's who I'd call.

I'd give Brady Hoke a call. Back in 2011 I was reading about how much better he was than Kelly and I hear he may be available soon.

I started to reply to MNIrishman's Hotlz comments but erased it. Then I saw this one which actually ties those posts together.

The Three Stooges, Monk, Beauchump, and Wadsworth were a key part of Lou's departure but so was his personality. Lou was a Turnaround Specialist, he was never a maintainer of any program he was affliated with. He built them up and left.

Yes he was vertically mobile which explains his early departures and MIN. I lived in the NYC area when he coached the Jets. I saw his PC where he softly said he was resigning because, "I don't know how to motivate people that play for money." He also had communications issues with the owner. Holtz college strengths didn't transcend to the NFL. Kelly's may or may not but it's not a given. If Kelly can't deal with Jenkins, Swarbrick, Res Life and Honesty Committee's he's gonna have a real problem with Owner and GM authority. The adminstration is going to tell any ND coach he can't take a kid with 2.0 GPA and no math skills. An Owner or GM is gonna tell him he HAS to draft player X over player Y who Kelly likes better.

At Arkansas he replaced a legend unfortunately that legend remained involved with the program and the administration sided with the old coach. Holtz didn't have the finesse to deal with those issues and left their with as much turmoil as he left ND. In his early phase at aRK and at ND his intensity was received as focus in the later years at both places it was viewed as blatant obstinacy. He got into dogfights at both places.

As for winning was harder after a championship, that's true to some degree but players graduate and a lot of new hungry one replace them unlike NFL teams. 1989 the year after the NC was Vinny Cerrato's 4th class at ND. Lou had all Lou's boys (actually Vinny's boys as Cerratto was a FULL TIME Recruiting Coordinator. The NCAA rewrote the rules to prevent full time RCs because of Cerrato's success.) Under Cerrato ND's talent was deep across the board the '89 teams at 25 or 30 players that were drafted by the NFL in subsequent years. In 1990 DC Barry Alvarez left to re-build a program at Wisconsin. Lou's defense was never the same after that. By 1994 when Lou's record declines Cerrato's kids were gone. Joe Moore was a legend coaching Cerrato's talent but when the OLs were kids Moore recruited ND could only run for 64 yds against Air Force.

I am hoping last year was the critical year for Brian Kelly's long term future at Notre Dame. As I understand it, the head coach does not get paid all that much by the University but with all the automatic deals that kick in from shoe companies, TV programs etc. makes an awful lot of money.

The assistant coaches however do not have these deals, so Notre Dame must pay them straight up money close to Kelly's base salary to attract top flight assistant coaches.

I think the reason it took a long time to work out Kelly's contract last year was for Jack and Father Jenkins and Kelly to slowly and patiently convince BOT and other powerful figures why Notre Dame had to pay assistant coaches a lot of money to coach here.

Harry Hiestand is still here. BVG came here from the Jets.

I do not think these outstanding assistant coaches are being paid chump change. Kelly wanted and got Notre Dame to pay enough dough to allow him to hire and keep top notch assistant coaches. The coaching staff at Notre Dame is now an outstanding coaching staff. Notre Dame is paying this outstanding coaching staff what is required.

Jack, Father Jenkins and Brian Kelly thanks for getting this done.

As far as the players involved in this unfortunate situation - remember the very strong privacy laws that prohibit and punish any disclosure of anything about any student.

Kelly may have known a lot more than he was publicly saying.

A degree from the University of Notre Dame means something for every football player because you actually earn it and work for it - even if you are an outstanding athlete.

At Notre Dame, STUDENT-athlete. This will repel a lot of outstanding athletes. It will attract a lot of outstanding student-athletes.

I am hopeful Brian Kelly will be at Notre Dame for a long while.

I don't see Kelly leaving -- his offense is getting fully implemented on his beloved turf, with Golson reaching his peak, Folson and Bryant completing their evolutions and Fuller and Robinson becoming dominant. He gets to see this year's green defense blossom into maturity, buttressed by the return of Russell. Plus he gets to see his redshirts phase in, along with a sweet recruiting class. All against an easier schedule.

But maybe I am thinking like a fan.
