It's still just as significant. But it's not an award about being a great student-athlete or a good person anymore. It's an MVP-style award.

That's the Maxwell Award. The Heisman is supposedly held to a higher standard.

SUPPOSEDLY.

I was a hater. But now I just hate it for him.

His downward spiral is tragic, but I struggle to feel for him on the basis of his current mistakes. He's been offered help from everyone in his professional life, and even accepted that help, and he's still squandered the opportunities and privileges that he's been given. Substance abuse is something that can take over and put you beyond help, but even if you take away his legitimate substance issues, he was still always an irresponsible douchebag that cared nothing for his place in the world in relation to those that relied on him.

On the other hand, I DO feel for him on the basis of his upbringing. His family, and his father in particular, have done him no favors, and are largely responsible for his issues and his disregard for responsibility. His father's most recent comments are ridiculous, and do make me feel bad for him in that regard.

What a strange situation.

That's I guess, what I mean.

So his daddy and mommy enabled him, now they make those kind of comments to Sportscenter!?

Unreal.

When you have to bribe your high school-aged kid to not drink by offering him a brand new car, you're missing something in the parenting game. And you sure as hell need better answers than "If I have to burry him, so be it" when your child has issues in the future.

I missed it...can someone please provide a recap of what his old man said?

Substance abuse is a mother effer. My GF just went to a funeral yesterday for one of her son's best friend. Good kid, only 22 years of age. :(

They say "hate the addiction, not the person." In this case, it's hard not to hate the person.

The thing is I was rooting for him to do well, because he faced adversity for the first time in his life (everyone saying he wouldn't make it in the NFL), and completely imploded instead of fighting. Eff his dad, he seems cut from the same cloth. I feel awful for his mom.

I can't really feel bad for him at this point. Maybe not his family, but obviously he has some people in his life (And he had a whole NFL organization) trying to get him to clean up his act and make better decisions. He refuses to do those things, so he's throwing away good advice and taking his own. He's not a victim in all this, he's making the choices. He's going to have to live with the consequences unfortunately, and they may catch up to him sooner than later.

Agree, like they say, regardless of the situation it has to be you that makes the decision to get things straightened out. His first attempt he was only going through the motions because the Browns wanted him to. It wasn't his decision.

Saw the news that the NFL suspended Manziel for 4 games, which is kind of funny as he's a free agent that no one likely wants. Went to his Instagram and saw this from a few years ago, before he was signed.

Kind of ironic RG3 took his job years later.

Was listening to Furman & North this morning. North had spoken to a guy this past weekend who watched JF play in high school and was quite familiar with JF and his family. He mentions that JF had these issues back in HS, but everyone kept covering for him because he was a big talent. Same for when he went to A&M. Everyone knew what was going on, but turned their heads since he was winning games. The real kicker, is the guy tells North that JF's dad and uncle were not much different from JF, in terms of careless actions and self-entitlement. Looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Yeah, it's pretty much well known down here. He had an incident in high school in which he was busted driving drunk back from San Antonio and tried bribing the cops out of a ticket...when the cop refused, Johnny called his dad, who in turn called Grandpa Manziel (rich oil guy...where all the family money comes from) and all of a sudden the charges disappeared.

Guy was as wild in high school as college. Will probably end up selling cars like his dad.

would definitely be interested to see how he goes. CFL is basically a league full of ex high profile CFB QB's now who never made it in NFL

His base skill set is better aligned to the CFLs more wide open style but you also have to have a strong arm up there (larger fields) and I expect the skills he does have, have diminished already... anything is possible but I expect him to flop there too....

CFL style of play has changed alot these days, they do a lot of option concepts. Mobile QB's are valuable and they don't have the stiff white guys standing back in the pocket as much anymore.

Don't know if they've diminished, but being traded because he couldn't break the starting lineup says a mouthful. Any word on if he's curtailed his over consumption issues.

Eh... Masoli was always going to be the started Been the starter for the last 3 years now, not going to change because of JF. Has a better shot with Montreal as they cannot get anything going on offense.
