I don't think you have any control of who buys a ticket once you put it up on stubhub, yeah?
Correct, I believe, but the problem is deeper than that.
The problem for ND football is that we are, whether people like this comparison or not, the Yankees of CFB. Therefore, we are not just hated by our rivals, but by fans all across the land. Georgia fans hate ND and everything about us. From perceiving us as perpetually overrated (ironic coming from Georgia but w/e), to Catholicism, to Lena Kakua, and so. Fans for every team loathe us.
So, now their team is traveling north of the Mason-Dixon line for the first time in these fans' lifetimes. They make a coordinated effort to show up en masse to take over the stadium. While these fans continue to spit hate and claim ND is irrelevant they snatch up as many tickets as possible for a ONCE IN A LIFETIME opportunity to come to ND to watch a game. While many fans of ND that are not alumni also "make the pilgrimage" to ND every year, they have 7 chances to do so, and it is far cheaper for these fans to make a game against Temple, Miami (OH), and so on. Add to the fact that many alumni are not happy with the program, and would rather say FU and pocket money, you get a large amount of tickets on the secondary market.
As a non alum ND fan, I have made several trips to see games, however living in PA it is extremely hard to justify making the game, especially as a teacher. I would more than likely have to take a Friday off work for the drive, which is tough being that last week was our first week of school. So, right there the logistics prevented this fan from going.
Then there is the price. Since Georgia fans, like Nebraska and Texas fans, HATE ND just because, and because they have one chance to get to a game in South Bend, they consumed the market for the tickets, hence why the prices skyrocketed. Many ND fans, I'm sure, who wanted to go to a home game this year, without season tickets, probably wrote the game off as soon as they saw the prices. "We can just go to the Temple game, the Miami (OH) game," and so on. This will not happen when ND goes to Georgia because, while there will be many ND fans wanting to go, they will not be able to take tickets from Georgia season ticket holders. Why? Because 1, Georgia fans hate ND and want to make sure they watch their "Dawgs" whoop on some Irish ass. 2, Georgia fans who can't make it will have pride and sell their tickets to other Georgia fans. And 3, because, unlike ND fans, they are terrified of how their stadium would look if it wasn't 90% red/white.
