How much do you pay for cable/internet?

Moving out of our current house and out to the burbs on April 20th, and looking to make a change from Comcast to either Dish Network, or just high speed internet. Tired of my $185 comcast bill every month.

Can anyone give me an after tax/fee idea of what they pay for dish network with internet (I realize they provide internet through 3rd party).

Don't need the razzle dazzle packages, just give me the standard~120 channels in 3 different rooms and internet strong enough to work from home with.

Appreciate any input.

I think dish is the worst out of all the providers, why are you fixed on them?

I've always hears good things, and wanted to try something new. Tired of cable (had time Warner before comcast).

What would you suggest? What about direct tv?

I would go Direct over Dish, Dish is good if you want a lot of foreign channels. But if your moving you can probably get a killer deal from Comcast for at least the first 2 years and then start to play the cable/internet game

Funny that this popped up, I've been calling around trying to find a replacement for my Spectrum/Time Warner service. They've increased the bill again to $55/month plus tax and all that for what should be at least 20-25 mbs but I'm lucky if I get that. Unfortunately it looks like Spectrum may be the only decent provider in my area. Cincinnati Bell can only do 5 mbs until they get their Fiber into my area, and AT&T can only do 1.5. Garbage!

I've had Time Warner/Spectrum, Direct TV, and Dish. I pay less with Dish, even after the introductory period. Service has been great too.

Set TV. It's streamed TV. 20$ a month and all sports packages and premium channels included. It's downloaded onto a firestick. Firestick doesn't have to be jail broken

So after looking into our options, we’re going to go with DirectTV (Centurylink internet).

We’re getting their 150-channel package for $40 for 12 months, which goes to $78 after the promo. The only additional fee they’re saying is the $7 rental for a 2nd TV.

So $47/$85 there on TV. No HD/DVR fee, unless I’m being straight lied to.

Internet will be $45, so after the promo, we’re paying $130 for both, ~$140 after taxes. This is better than our current cost of $186 for Comcast, so we’re happy.

I started with that package a few years ago. The last bill I got before I cancelled was $152. There were fees for something like "advanced receivers" plus some other random fees, so I suppose they didn't charge for dvr service, but you couldn't do it without the receiver. Good luck.

DirecTV fees will go up @12 mos, 18 mos, 24 mos. You'll be shopping for a bundle again in two years.

It inly goes up at the 12 month, and to $78. thats the standard rate for the 150 channel package.

Again, unless I've been lied to.

They didn’t lie to you. DirecTV is pretty straightforward about pricing, and they won’t hassle you if you add a premium channel and then cancel.

But after 24 months, they’ll jack up your prices to more than the $78 without telling you. When you notice the increase and then call to negotiate it to make it lower, they’ll ask for a new 2-year contract.

You're voluntarily paying for cable? How old are you again?

I hate dinking around when I get home. I like hitting guide and seeing everything at once. I like being able to dvr, and I don't like dinking around with apps. and I have 2-3 tv's to set up. I also only have 1 smart tv.

Tell me what option I have other than cable/dish when I don't want to dink around? I'm asking seriously.

You don’t need to dink around if you get Sling or a similar streaming service. You just need a streaming device and an antenna for each TV. The most legwork after setting up the devices is selecting “Sling” on the device with the remote, or hitting “Source” to switch to the antenna.

I understand the appeal/convenience of DirecTV, btw. Just letting you know that streaming services and devices aren’t that complicated, really.

With DirecTV, you're paying for a ton of content that you'll never watch (at least I hope you'll never watch it, because most of it is garbage). You can easily stream anything you're interested in for a fraction of the cost of cable/ satellite.

Also, TV rots your brain. Paying for satellite will encourage you to waste much more time than you otherwise would hypnotized in front of the boob tube. Cut the cable, stream the few things you actually care about, and watch less TV. You'll be a better man for it.

Get YouTubeTV. $35 a month. Runs on any device you have. Xbox, PlayStation, Roku. And I think they're sending out free Chromecasts when you sign up.

Not sure on free Chromecast, at least I didn't see that option when I signed up. You can stream 3 devices at once, get unlimited cloud dvr for up to 6 accounts I believe, get local channels included so you don't need an anntena. It also gives you access to watchespn programming which is really nice for an ND fan. It's $35 a month for everyone who signs up before I think March 13th, when the price goes up to $40 since they just added the Turner channels. If you are signed up before the 13th, you are locked in at the $35.

I really wish they offered YouTubeTV where I live. It definitely seems like the best deal for as little TV as I watch.

Jailbroken FireStick!

The only problem is you don't know how long until the servers running certain apps will stop working, or how long until you'll need a new one entirely.

Could be two years, could be just a couple of months.

They're expanding, but the big hangup is the network affiliates, i.e. your local NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX stations. Those deals all need to be negotiated independently.

The thing that got me to switch was YouTubeTV adding NESN, which is the Red Sox' regional network. Most DMVPDs* don't offer that.

I'd really like to switch from Sling to YouTubeTV, but YouTubeTV isn't compatible with the Amazon Firestick. Not sure if I want to drop $100+ on two more Roku devices ($200+ if you want the good devices that will work seamlessly for 2+ years) to replace the Firesticks we use in our house now.

I'm not, for the record. My dad had one for a few months, but then it tried to update itself and the device crashed and stopped working.

The idea that your streaming device is operating via unknown servers and with unfamiliar logins makes me uncomfortable.

I have PS4, but PS4 doesn't have Youtube TV yet. Xbone exclusive thus far.

No smart TV's in the house, which is why we are reliant on streaming devices. We have 5 decent flat screens with 2 Firesticks and 3 Roku's.

The monthly savings from Sling to Youtube TV would pay for the Rokus over the course of like 6 months I guess.

Or you could buy an Xbox and we can be best friends and play the shit out of Red Dead II Online when it comes out.

Haha, I tried to convince my wife to let me buy an Xbox when we switched to Sling 'because we need a new streaming device anyway,' but no dice. She opted for the $50 Roku stick.

I may be able to sneak a purchase on Black Friday, but that's a long way out, and I'm considering a Nintendo Switch if I get another console anyway.
