Offense will clearly be the strength of the team ,but yes there are still issues on offense as well.
Starting with Kelly/Malik, the approach of Kelly's scheme, and the offensive line.
Malik looks to be a wonderful talent but he has in his career one single TD pass and 400 yards. Expecting wire to wire stellar play from this youngster may simply be too demanding an expectation.
The offensive line only returns two starters and may only have one great player in Stanley. Yes on paper the guys we put in can be very good , that's in theory, and our schedule does not allow a long period to gel.
Last year we had a turnover laden but highly productive scoring offense ,it was built , likely overbuilt, on Golsons arm with little dedication to the run game. This year Kelly needs to build the offense around Maliks running skills and the overall run game with our RBs. Its unclear how Coach Kelly will handle this week in and week out since it is counterintuitive for his historical philosophy on offense..
We all know Kelly would prefer to pass and score then any other method , he used "some " restraint in 2012 with Golson a newbie ,but he had had the security blanket of a TOP 10 defense, no such luxury in 2015. Actually the offense will need to control the clock and keep the defense off the field.
Ironically the strength of the offense is our deep and talented stable of WRs , and yet Kelly needs to use self control and not turn Malik into EG throwing 40 times despite the talent at wideout.
TE is also a question mark. Koyack was overrated and was the weakest guy in that position we have had in awhile here at TE U. We have a great looking roster of young guys but who steps up and when as the next great TE is not crystal.
At RB, Folston is a good looking back that appears to be ready to step up big, I like his progress. But Bryant has been a disappearing 5 star and Prosise has had so much hype from Kelly that alone begs the question on how many touches he actually gets.
Offense will be good, but can we get 32/35 points a game, I doubt that. Can we control the clock , score heavy when we get to the red zone , move the ball on 3rd down well, that's the best bet for 2015 and its not the typical Kelly offense. So our coaches self control is an issue.
It will be interesting. Potential is very high with an outstanding athlete at QB ,lots of speed at the skill spots ,and lots of size on the OLINE. But it needs to blend into a consistent identity right out of the gate. Overall though Confidence in the offense justifiably should be much higher then the defense.
