Agreed, if football doesn't work out, they have that ND degree. Awesome to see the support Freeman and other coaches show their sport.
Totally agree. One of so many reasons why Freeman is a great coach and a great recruiter. He genuinely cares about these kids and loves Notre Dame. Recruits and players sense this which makes them want to play for him and play very hard. Season opener cannot get here quick enough. Go Irish!

The TV money is not superior. ND doesn’t have to share their take.
Yeah you’re wrong about this. The Big 10 TV deal pays each school more than NBC pays us. But it’s close and we really shouldn’t join that league just to add a few bucks.

I’m not sure what the deal is with Michigan State. I realize they are a rival (or used to be) but to me they’re just another opponent. Michigan, however, is hated and inspires all kinds of feelings when we play them, from anxiety to anger when we don’t play well, to euphoria when we do. I’d much rather beat Michigan than play MSU.

It's good to have rivals, and to play them frequently. USC is our rival, and CFB would be much diminished if that series was discontinued.

Michigan is an enemy. It is stupid to take actions that benefit one's enemies. Michigan benefits more from playing us than we benefit from playing them, so I hope we never schedule them again.

I disagree. We are diminished if we are playing 7 ACC games per year without having USC and Michigan on the schedule.

“USC has offered a one-year extension to play in Los Angeles in 2026, sources tell SI, while Notre Dame desires another long-term deal.

USC has broached the idea of moving the game to a season-opening spot on the schedule“

Yeah this thing is cooked, and it’s incredibly clear as to who is ending it

Riley is a wuss. Just really unfortunate to lose this game.

After a break early in the 20th century, the series picked back up in '48. Given the proximity of the schools adds to the draw. More so, typically at least one and many times both teams were ranked when they played. 1966 Game of the Century is still considered one of the greatest CFB ever given the talent on both teams.

I agree with you. Outside of the Duffy Daugherty era ('65 and '66 in particular), MSU has been a big box of nothing for years. I don't understand how they became our "rival". I consider Purdue a bigger "rival" than MSU, and PU has had some pretty competitive teams over the years (even though they currently suck). And at least the Boilers are in state.

Hate to loose a rivalry game but I think it would be way more beneficial to play an annual game in Texas then Cali. If it gets cancelled we should rotate a home/away with UT, ATM, Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech

UT, sure. The rest of them who gives a shit. They're no different than the interchangeable ACC teams we already play too many of.

But, honestly, the way things are going with nine-conference schedules in the B1G and (soon) SEC, we'll be playing lots of mid Big 12 teams just to fill out a schedule before long.

Would love an annual or semi annual game in Texas. A rising SMU wouldn't be a bad choice either to bring Irish into Dallas recruiting. Better than Baylor or TTU.

There's so much more history (on the actual gridiron) between MSU and ND. They've played 77 times dating back to 1897. scUM and ND? 43 games since 1887, 95% of which is scUM's fault. From getting salty because they lost to us, to being anti-Catholic bigots, to blocking ND from joining the conference even though now they cry that we aren't in a conference...I personally just hate everything about that fucking football program I want nothing to do with them outside of rooting for whoever they are playing against.

UT would be fun, the rest of these, meh, compared to our most historic rival in USC.

As others have said, with the conference schedules ND will see less opportunity to schedule big power schools. Might have to settle for a rotation of 2 classic powerhouse teams a season + 7 ACC and throw in Navy , a BIG, and a "surprise" team.

Interestingly the Clemson/ND/ACC argument still being publicly disputed within that same article:

““I have been pretty clear that the rotation is the rotation and that is five games every year,” Phillips said at the 2025 ACC spring meetings last week. “The Clemson–Notre Dame piece of it is not a part of that rotational five. … The ones that had already been announced, that is part of this rotation that we have across 16 other schools beside Clemson.”

Notre Dame is expecting all 12 of the Clemson games to count toward the annual ACC total, per sources, with discussions ongoing to hammer out that part of the agreement.”

This. MSU is in our Top 5 among teams we've faced the most in history. The list goes: Navy, USC, Purdue, Pitt, MSU.There is a TON of history there, not to mention the ol' Megaphone Trophy which is still in our possession. While MSU isn't an enemy like Michigan, they are a very strong rival and there's a little bit of bad blood at times. Look at some of the recent games over the last 20 years:

You had them planting the flag on our field in '05.
The revenge game in '06 which led to the infamous Mike Valenti rant and MSU standing at their 50 yard line alone as they tried to defend their field from a flag planting that never happened.
There was Rees upsetting their 2013 season for MSU's lone loss and preventing them from going to the National Championship.
There was the bogus "Little Giants" play that should have had a flag thrown on it.
Then Dantonio came back the next year trying to capitalize on a trick play again and got his ass stuffed.

There's more, but that's just some of the recent history. You've got the '66 "Game of the Century" too that ended in a tie and plenty of other classics.

As much as Michigan sucks and it's fun to beat their ass, we have way, way more history with MSU.
