lol This is delightfully absurd
I am suggesting that the results you see on the field are absurd.
I'm sorry guys - I'm not meaning to fan the flames - and I do think this has little to do with Nick Coleman. We have at least 3 Nick Colemans on the field every year.
I recognize you all think I'm out of line, but I'm simply suggesting that we have to stop acting like we're so damn special. We're no more special than Army, Navy and the Ivy League. I'm suggesting we cut the BS we put ahead winning football games. It's my belief that if we don't, that's where we are heading.
Why do we want to handcuff ourselves? Why do we treat athletes any different than they are treated elsewhere in football? What does it get us? Loyalty? Extra points in the Crapital One Cup Standings? GSR standings? It gets us a <80 man roster every year, of that much I'm sure.
Honestly, what is the point of the 40 Year Commitment pitch? It's dysfunctional and is emblematic of our entire attitude problem. Best part is, it doesn't even cut both ways. LOL.
Here's my manifesto:
* Academic matters should impact our program to a LESSER degree than other schools, not to an exponentially higher degree. We have had more academic suspensions in the past 5 years than the entire SEC has had in 50 years (not a fact).
* Accept students with less stellar academics - and give them whatever resources are needed to stay eligible. It would be nice if some of them graduated.
* Drop the 40 year commitment motto for recruits. Come to Notre Dame because it gives you the best chance to play football for a living, to achieve glory and win championships.
* Handle legal matters on par with other big-time programs.
* Make a decision regarding conference alignment that best serves our opportunity to win championships. I believe this is best done by joining the ACC fully. Am still not clear how "independence" does anything other than get the rest of CFB to unify against us. I won't miss annual games with Stanford, Navy, and random B1G members. Won't miss NBC either.
* Hire the best coaches money can buy, pay them the most money, give them whatever they need to win championships. This includes turf, jumotrons, names on uniforms, fireworks, billion dollar training facilities, etc...
* Oversign and cut players at the same rate as other top programs. We enter September every year with a self imposed sanction. I wonder if there were any DBs in the last 5 years we said no to because there wasn't enough room? (Hint: there were)
* Stop pretending that anything is more important than winning. I have had enough human interest stories about ND players and staff to last a lifetime. Enough great white hope Rudy reinvented walkon fantasy figures. Enough singing. Enough band. Enough honoring the girls tidlywinks team. Enough graduation rates. Enough class presidents. Enough homely cheerleaders. Enough talk about special this and unique that. Army used to win. They are very special. Nobody cares.
* Take away ticket privileges from anyone not willing to stand and scream their heads off the entire game.
* Don't cheat.
In more ways than one, we are getting further away from 1988 with each passing year.
