Kinda early for a basketball game isn't it?

This is, to be serious, the EXACT type of early season game the team needs: a respectable mid-major program which probably will neither beat you nor injure you, but give just enough force for working out your kinks in your O&D systems.

This was followed by a tweet that this is not happening. It was Matt Fortuna.

“@Matt_Fortuna: Ball State announces it will play at #NotreDame on Sept. 8, 2018. No truth to the rumor @DavidHaugh is behind this.”

Could not agree with you more-just 1 to get things started. Now I cant wait to hear the detractors say something about the schedule. Notice lately nobody is saying anything about the fact that the schedule is off the charts difficult. This type of game should open the season every year.

Nov 24: at USC

at Navy, vs Stanford, and BYE dates yet to be slotted. I don't see how anyone could be worried about a light schedule with Virginia Tech, Florida State, USC, and Stanford on it already. And you know Swarbrick will get another marquee game in there anyway.

With five away games already on the books, the two unknowns will have to be home games. I'd like to see them open at Navy on Sept 1, have Stanford on Sept 29, and the BYE on Oct 6. The Shamrock Series game would most likely be with Syracuse, Pittsburgh, or one of the two unknown opponents.

Ball St is 3-0 against Connecticut, a team ND has never beaten.

I have no problem with this. Not exactly sure you want a murders row schedule every season. The ACC portion is tough as previously mentioned, then you add USC, Stanford and two other games to be scheduled...not exactly sure what you want Notre Dame to do.

There is a difference between Ball State and UT-Chattanooga and some of the schools the SEC plays. Its good for Notre Dame to play the in-state schools.

They can now add the typical Purdue/MSU/Louisville/BYU etc games in there to fill out the final two games. If Notre Dame scheduled Ball State, Western Michigan and Bowling Green State U, sure, thats where I think people would have problems, but Notre Dame isn't going to do that.

Read the tweet again, Fortuna isn't saying the game is off. He is saying David Haugh didn't have anything to do with it.

Would scheduling Ball, IU, and PU be much different from your rhetorical cohort?

I know I'm in the minority on this, and that's ok,I'm fine with that, I just don't care to see ND schedule games against schools who couldn't beat my former HS team.

Against piss poor competition????

I'm interested in watching ND have a true, good-situation tune-up game early in the year, since the schedule already looks formidable.

Scheduling a school like Ball State is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign that your AD knows what he's doing. It's an early win, an early opportunity to work some stuff out, and most importantly it's not against a total embarrassment of a school.

Ball St best claims to fame are once being a top party school, and David Letterman. Ok, a third, Jim Davis.

Ball State won 9 games in 2012 and 10 games in 2013. Not bad, regardless of who you're playing, IMO.

They did regress last year with a 5-7 record, but it should be noted that in all 7 of their losses, they never lost by more than 14 points (!). They were competitive in every game they played.

Answer me this......are either one of you the least bit interested in watching this match up?????

Yes, I watch all the ND games.

And I watched all of them when Ara was coaching. Ara opened with a less strenuous foe every year and maximized the use of LESSER schedules to be consistently ranked.

Rocke opened with cremepuffs annually.

ND hasn't scheduled those Div 1AA or Div II schools in 80 years. The SEC wins NC with that caliber OOC foes.

Some top tier schools' schedules are loaded with games like this. Good tune up at game speed early in the season. OK, they are terrible. We have plenty of good teams on our schedule every year. Take the W and move on. I'm all for it.

Notre Dame's claims to fame in this millennium are academics, women's basketball, and fencing. AND, men's and women's soccer.

See SEC schedules, The Citadel, UAB, Ark St, SW Nowhere, etc, etc. Ball St would be a substantial upgrade for them.

No, Ball St wouldn't be an upgrade for them, they'd still beat the dog piss out of them by 60 pts.

You have forgotten the other "football". Notre Dame has claimed National Championships in both men's and women's soccer during this millenium.

I thought about women's soccer but didn't want to make it too sexist.

I overlooked men's soccer completely.

Thanks for the catch.

.... ridiculous attempt to dis Swarbrick/Kelly's scheduling strategy above. It reduces to an "argument" that a personal fan's "enjoyment factor" is more important than team overall seasonal success. That is not being a fan of the team in my opinion.

This scheduling is not arbitrary randomness on Swarbrick/Kelly's part. Scheduling every game a physical monster is the kind of thing that gets you an occasional season like last year's where you are lucky to have a healthy defensive tackle left on the roster.

As to whether playing Ball State or WMU would be "entertaining" to me: Hell, yes! That early game would be showing me all manner of answers to who's starting, what packages we were using, how the OLine was jelling, whether the QB looked confident, whether the safeties and linebackers were instinctive, if our backs looked clever at reading the gaps, ... football stuff.

I'll never put my entertainment before ND football success. ... unthinkable.

OMM, sorry, but by playing a lesser opponent answers not one single question that you as a fan may have. Your QB had damn well better be confident or he shouldn't be playing the position. Your OL had better push a team like Ball St all over the damn field, say nothing of how they will perform against Southern Cal Or Stanford. Your backs should have a 10 hole to run through, if not reread previous sentence. Your S's and your LB's shouldn't have any problems.....lesser opponent. On top of all that, Kelly isn't going to show anything much against an opponent like Ball St, if he does, then he didn't do his job in the preseason.

As for a season like last year with depth on the defensive side of the ball, some of that should also be put on the coaching staff for not recruiting depth. Some of that was from Diaco, but some of that is also player development......at least at the LB position .

And OMM's point was that his entertainment is not as important as championships. If you honestly don't understand why ND should be scheduling teams like Ball State rather than Northwestern you need to think harder about this. Neither team gives us any national respect if we win and either team ruins the season if we lose. But one is a middling B1G team that can pull an upset on the right night and the other can't. We're gaining a guaranteed win with no drop off in scheduling perception.
