Listening to a podcast on Scout. Tim O'Malley thinks Cody Riggs will be a top 10 player on this team and thinks KVR could be one of the best corners in the country.

He also says that we would be talking a lot more about Butler if he was able to compete in spring ball

O'Malley will be shocked if Zaire doesn't play this year

I also would be. It just makes sense to get him some playing time if the situation allows the staff to switch QBs for a series or two.

I know the Spring game is not a good predictor of success but given Zaire's play-making and check-downs, I'd also be surprised if he didn't get his own drives each game. It may not be wise to bring in a 2nd QB in all game situations but if it's as even as it looked all spring, then we may see Kelly running an 80/20 with Golson/Zaire and feeling out both QBs each Saturday.

If one isn't getting it done, the roles are reversed. I know that isn't an ideal scenario but Zaire looked ready to play, and we all know what Golson can do.

Let's hope we score so many points, Zaire plays in most games and we can keep both QBs happy.

The stretch play.........A staple of Manning and the Colts. It will be interesting to see how they teach this. Manning kept the ball in-sight for the defense so they couldn't tell if he was going to hand-off or pass. His cue was the CB. If he stays with the receiver, he hands off. If the CB comes up to support the run, he throws it. It's also imperative that the QB get out there fast and stay next to the RB. This play is usually run from a two tight-end set or some other tight formation rather than a spread.

I understand this guys points and I am glad he wrote the article, but;

The Everett Golson conversation was oversimplified on both sides. The tools were great in '12 but unfamiliar. This year he is getting a chance to get acquainted with the guys. Remember, in '12 there was a wide open quarterback competition which hurt an inexperienced guy like Golson worse than a guy like Rees.

As far as the defensive conversation, he was dead on, as far as he went. The one thing he forgot about the Diaco era is, that the defense that the coach envisioned was run. Not the defense that may have fit the personnel best. So last year when we came up short on healthy players, what did we do? Blitz more, expose our players more, and the weaknesses of the defense. What BVG has all over Diaco is his ability to craft a defense with his personnel in mind, the aggressiveness has nothing to do with why the defense will be more sound.

The offensive line. The guy under-exaggerates to make his point : All the experts that saw the practice yesterday echoed that we were five by three for the first time in 30 years. Solid depth on the offensive line, with top coaching trumps standout players. Here is why; the offensive line to be successful has to play as a single unit, and Chris Watt was injured over half the year (effectively). Look at how many went down last year. We haven't had enough linemen to prepare for bowl games correctly for the past two seasons! By Jupiter, I love Zack Martin as much as any fanatic, but having the development of those in the program and the influx of Byrne, Bars, and Nelson, particularly, all who have done an impressive job in the summer, is going to take the "team" further!

Counting down the Irish: 25-21 | Inside the Irish

Keith Arnold's annual list of the Top 25 ND players kicks off with #21-25, and this:

While the depth chart at receiver is deep, Fuller is the type of player that can move inside and out, a situational weapon that Brian Kelly could use to break open the passing game, especially in one-on-one coverage. That’s why I predicted a 1,000 season out of Fuller, and rated him higher than any of the other panelists.

Um... what?

Not worthy of it's own thread so I'll post here.

Forbes has named Brian Kelly as the #1 coach for the money.

Translation, pay the man.

The Best College Football Coaches For The Money - Forbes

There's no way $1.08m per annum is an accurate reflection of Kelly's total compensation package from ND. That may be what gets reported on his W-2, but for Forbes to take that figure at face value is laughable.

- I don't agree with that at all. He was arguably more familiar with the '12 group of weapons than this group, as he had a full season of practice with them. In addition, that group of receivers was nowhere near great, and nowhere near this year's group.

- Agreed. I don't know if this unit will be better than '12's unit, but they definitely have more athleticism and diversity. They can be a lot more flexible with the scheme than they were under Diaco. Now they just need the leadership and experience to put it all together.

- Nothing I really have to say about that one.

The first point I could have stated more clearly. If using hindsight, with Golson the choice, the fact that he got thirty per cent of the first team reps in that camp was not to his advantage. Familiarity is built on first team reps in preseason camp. That is all I was saying. This year he is going to get at least double that.

Russell (#17) and Bryant (#22) make ESPN's top 50 breakout players in CFB.

Counting down the Irish: 15-11 | Inside the Irish
Over the past few years, we’ve heard bits and pieces of the methodology Kelly has used. We’ve run through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and developing unconscious competence. We’ve seen Kelly’s recruiting philosophy, trending away from positions, but moving to types: Skill, Power, Big Skill. And we’ve heard him talking about the difference between playing winning football and championship football.
At this point in our rankings, every player on the list needs to be capable of playing Championship Football. (Caps for intent.) And as we roll into Year Five of the Kelly era, the players ranked 15-11 on the list seem to fit that criteria.

Keith thinks we have 15 kids that can play "championship football." Does everyone agree? Also, do you feel that's the most we've had since BK?

Per ESPN a few minutes ago.
ND is an underdog for the following games, and also a double digit favorite in only 2 games.

Michigan
Stanford
North Carolina
@FSU
@ASU
@USC

That's half of our games... I can certainly see 4 of these, but Michigan and North Carolina at home??

I guess I've drowned in Koolaid, but I think we sweep home games, beat ASU, get beat by FSU, and toss up to USC.

Fans do, it's natural.

This team has a very high ceiling because of its athleticism, but honestly a pretty low floor too because of its inexperience. With a schedule so brutal, they could easily go 7-5...or worse with an injury at DT or QB.

If ESPN is offering you a line on Michigan and North Carolina, you should take it! (They are wrong...)
Perhaps they meant we might be underdogs on the road or even neutral. But currently Sportsbook.ag has

Michigan +4.5 @ Notre Dame
North Carolina +3 @ Notre Dame

and as FYI,
We are currently...
Rice +21 @ Notre Dame
Stanford -3 @ Notre Dame
Notre Dame +22 @ FSU
Notre Dame +3.5 @ ASU
Notre Dame +6.5 @ USC

The lines I saw earlier this summer from Golden Nugget (so not up to date) have
Notre Dame -21 vs. Purdue
Notre Dame -5.5 @ Syracuse
Notre Dame -3 @ Navy
Northwestern +8 @ Notre Dame
Louisville +8 @ Notre Dame

So, per the lines,
ND should beat easily Rice and Purdue.
ND should beat in a competitive contest, Michigan, Syracuse, NW, and Louisville
ND Should squeak by Navy and UNC
ND should barely lose to Stanford and ASU
ND should get beat in a competitive game vs USC
ND should get demolished by FSU

So the line predicts us at 8-4, with a decent possibility of going 10-2, with a stretch target of 11-1.

I don't like that they have us squeaking by Navy... I guess I understand it, but don't like it.
