The article says worst case scenario Russell ends up only average this year, or worse based on his performance against Gallon in the Michigan game last year. Hmmm, I just went back and watched the Michigan highlights/lowlights. While Gallon did have a number of big plays in the game, it doesn't look like poor coverage by Russell is the reason those plays occurred.

Gallon picked up a few big gains while we were in a zone. Of course theres his first TD where it looks like we were in a zone and Garnder finds Gallon open in a hole in the zone. Then there was a complete failure by our entire secondary to bring him down, just about everyone failed to tackle him. Russell could have made the tackle, but there were guys closer to Gallon than he was that should have made the play. Later in the half Russell did prevent a TD to Gallon by drawing a PI call, however it looked more like he was going for the ball and didn't cause interference upon a 2nd look. Probably a bad call by the officials there.

Gallon did pick up a few big plays in one on one with Russell, one of them being a TD. In both cases Russell was actually in great coverage and fighting, but Gardner and Gallon just made terrific plays and put the ball where only Gallon could get it. It looked like Russell was in great position, there wasn't much more he could do outside of drawing a penalty. The only big play I saw where Russell wasn't in any position to make a play was actually a late TD by Dileo, not Gallon. It looks to be man defense with about 4 minutes to go, three wide left, and for whatever reason Russell was backed too far off Dileo and Dileo got an easy score it looks like.

In short, I don't think it was necessarily a poor game by Russell. He wasn't matched up on Gallon every play, and we played quite a bit of zone, so you certainly can't fault him for the plays Gallon made when Gardner found him in the open holes. Could he have done better? Probably, based on those few big plays that occurred. However, I think Diaco came in with a poor game plan, failed to make good adjustments, and there were other break downs in personnel that hampered us worse than Russell's performance. If Russell plays like he did last year, I think he'll have a hell of a year.
