Yeah heat pumps especially split systems where your condenser is outside are notoriously terrible when temps get below 40 degrees and their performance/efficiency decreases significantly the colder it gets. We got space heaters for when it gets below 40 here which isn’t often. Don’t run the heat at all. The unit will run nonstop and not heat nearly as well as a few strategically paced heaters.

We have 3 split units for our house here in NEPA. They definitely are less efficient right now (single digit temps overnight), but still... Love having them along with our oil heat. When we first bought the house, we were filling our oil up every 3 weeks (old house with high ceilings and poor insulation). Now we can make it anywhere between 2-3 months between fill ups. Also nice that we can shop for electric suppliers, and I'm usually somewhere around $.07-$.09/kWh.

Even my Siberian Husky has been pretty quick to use the backyard, which is saying something. Normally she likes to sit outside for long periods in the winter, but not lately.

My German Shepherd (which tracking her lineage, she's of the Russian variety so LOVES the cold) has been the same, but not because of the cold as much as the wind. She's a baby and walks behind me as much as she can so I can be her wind barrier.

Consider yourself lucky.

We have two GSP and I’ve been forced to catch them to get them back inside.

Not sure how, but they love it.
My wife has been putting some ointment or cream on their paw pads before going out.

We used to have a chihuahua that my wife brought into the marriage. That guy never saw snow for the first 3 or so years of his life, he used a pad inside. When we got married I started training him to go outside. First time he went out into the snow he froze in his place when his paws touched it, then he rolled on the ground and started yelping  It wasn't even particularly cold that day.

We've got a border collie now, she loves to run through the snow. She doesn't particularly care for this cold, but she'll go out and do her business quick. Smartest damn breed I've ever seen, she picks up training and tricks in minutes. When we got her as a puppy I walked her around the property line a few times and to this day she's never left the yard. I can just let her outside, she does her business, then comes right back.

Sun is out in South Bend today, and it’s putting me in a bad mood. It’s a master trick of nature. I’m to the point where it just needs to stay a dark, gloomy iceberg until Spring Ball officially starts. Go to sleep, echoes... you aren’t here yet for waking up.

53 in the twin cities this week. Zero snow on the ground. The outside ice rinks are closed and the golf courses are

Sucks! Canceled the pond hockey tournament. We finished 4th last year and were poised to make a run.

Glad to see the sun yesterday and today with temps in the low 50’s. We had about 10 days in a row without the sun. Mother Nature isn’t done with winter yet. She’ll throw something at us 1 or 2 more times before she lets spring have its go.

So we have had a very warm fall this year, and now BOOM, predicting 6-8 inches of snow here in Pennsylvania.
