“Tyrone Willingham is one of the most respected names in college football...He epitomizes class, character, and the highest level of coaching achievement." Seems like he's laying it on pretty thick there.

Most respected?

Yea...thats just tough to swallow...not sure what happened to Tyrone...he did OK at Stanford, but thereafter not so good.

I'm guessing he got lucky or burned out...or a little of both. By the end of his stint at UW, his credibility was toast...he flat proved ND right...couldn't recruit, didn't choose to coach...

"Someway, somehow. Both teams will lose this bowl game"

The best post on that article.

He failed here... so did others... he is pretty classy and is widely respected... the only thing wrong with this is calling him highly successful... but that doesn't speak to his class and character. I have always wished him the best.

Hahahahahaha. I don't know what's better

1) a book about willingham

2) a book about "once glorious washington husky program"

3) the fact that people are still obsessed with race in sports (or anything). you either succeed or you don't. bottom line.

I liked him as a person, met him several times, and interacted with him. He is a very respectable and classy guy. He just didn't get the job done at ND. But that shouldn't take away from his character, he is a very good person.

Maybe, but it doesn't say a lot for his character that he was accepting some pretty hefty paychecks from ND while it didn't appear he was trying very hard to be successful ... at least not in recruiting. I could make the argument that that behavior speaks to a lack of character.

Wonder if he's still getting a paycheck from ND

Generally coaches are paid on their current contract after they are fired as long as they are not hired somewhere else and placed on contract there. Nowadays I am guessing the coaches are structuring the language in their contracts to guarantee them some money regardless. But, generally your old contract is void once you sign a new one. So in Ty's case I would seriously doubt it, but the University of Washington probably had to pay him for a while after his departure as long as he was fired and didn't retire.

I appreciate the link, head coaches are given a lot more latitude with how they structure their contracts nowadays. Apparently Ty's agent didn't spend all his time on the golf course.

I think it should say that he was re-fired in 2008, not retired.

I hate political correct BS like that.
