Wait some of you want them kicked off the team for smoking pot? Honestly how many kids do you think we would have on scholarship if this happend? How many kids do you think smoke pot on this team? They are college kids, I am not condoning it at all but some of you want them kicked off the team or suspended for 4-6 games? Come on, whoever has the hand gun can go and don't let the door hit them in the ass. Whoever got busted for pot do a camp Kelly x3 and have them sit out a half or a game.

Agreed. Don't think the weed is a big deal at all. It's decriminalized in Philly and the worst that would happen for lighting a spliff is a $25 fine.

No, because in an ongoing legal case I think it's a bit murky right now on whether it's appropriate to point a speculative finger at the person. The person won't come as a surprise though. I'm just hoping ND is expedient in their handling of discipline for the other players so the team can move on. I think it kind of sucks that all these guys are dragged into something about an illegal firearm because of one knuckleheads actions. Bet they wish they took two cars down to IU... sigh.

Sampson spoke on this early yesterday as well.

The timeline is also interesting because it's my understanding they were pulled over coming north on US 31 after returning from Indianapolis. Dexter Williams met with reporters about 3:30 p.m. Then the team had a BBQ immediately following media availability. To get down to Indianapolis from South Bend and nearly back in that short amount of time, I'm not clear of why you'd drive there for less than an hour and then return back to South Bend.

So last thing I'll say tonight is that based on what is floating around out there from multiple good sources it sounds like the Butler thing is at least partially trumped up and there's a chance it gets knocked down like what happened with the story the cop fabricated against Rees.

With the five, I wouldn't be surprised if four out of the five are fine... probably small suspension or nothing. The other has no place at ND, IMO. I think there will be resolution before Texas and the situations aren't really as bad as the headlines.

Agreed. Suspending them for even one game might be a little steep IMO, let alone the whole damn season as some people have said. People that are so devastated about these guys smoking weed would have a heart attack if they actually knew how many kids on the team smoke.

No one is advocating suspending them for simply smoking weed, I don't think. I think the suspension would be for KNOWINGLY taking part in an illegal activity. And one that could affect your availability to play, if caught; even post-toking. If they failed a drug test, which just could get popped on them towards the beginning of the season, then they might end up in trouble with the NCAA. It's an incredibly stupid move on their part. Not so much the smoking of the pot, but the time and place of it. And to be speeding on top of it............... just mind-boggling!

Michael Floyd got multiple DUIs and put other people on the road in danger. He wasn't allowed to do football activities for a while in the summer but didn't miss a game. So if Floyd can get away with no real punishment, then the guys that smoked a j should be practicing tomorrow IMO

That honestly isn't the same person I was thinking of but they do originate from the same state...

That's interesting because the only other person in the back(where gun was) from Florida is Stepherson, and I've heard nothing but great things about the kid.

Michael Floyd didn't have a gun in the car with him, while he was riding around drunk. And alcohol is not an illegal substance. This wasn't a case where the guys made a dumb decision to drive impaired after consuming a legal but intoxicating substance.

Yeah and 4 of the 5 guys didn't have a gun on them either. If players got suspended for every time they got caught with smoking weed our roster would be like 20 guys and Cierre Wood would have never played because he would've been suspended all the time.

Again. I don't think anyone is asking for them to get suspended for "smoking weed". If they had gotten pulled over for speeding and cops found a recreational amount of weed in the car, then I think people would probably NOT be asking for any suspensions. But because there was a serious crime involved, in having weed AND a handgun in the car, I think people rightly expect some kind of suspension. If no one is going to cop to owning/bringing the gun, then I would opt to make sure there are consequences to the guilty party by punishing them all. The alternative is that there are no consequences for the perpetrator, and that person learns that laws apply to regular people, not him.

Just to be clear...........

Michael Floyd did not have "multiple DUIs" at ND. He had one. The other two citations were for underage drinking, not DUI.

Idk what you think real punishment is. Floyd was suspended for the next academic semester following the offense as prescribed by Du Lac. We make a big deal out of treating athletes no differently from the rest of the students. If any of us had been in Floyd's shoes, we would have faced the same measures. I would have been prevented from traveling with the band over the summer and my resume would have taken a big hit. My parents would have beat my ass. And Floyd had many requirements above the academic suspension.

That system resulted fair treatment for the athlete. If we applied the same to these athletes, they would all miss the season and in both cases it would still be out of Kelly's hands.

It's just kind of cartoony to complain about an equitable system of student punishment like we use.

My bad. I thought he had one in Minnesota and one at ND.

I like Floyd as much as anyone but Kelly didn't have a backbone then. He should have suspended him at the min of 3 games. Dui/dwi are unacceptable! And I feel this about everyone. Your first offense you should lose your licenses for 6 months.

I don't think it was a lack of backbone. I think it was the timing of it. Floyd missed the Spring Semester, including Spring practice. He had to take classes over the summer to be eligible to play in the Fall. You could wait until Fall to suspend him, but that would be an awful long time after the fact. How long do you want it to drag on? He had a lot of "markers" that he had to meet, or he would not have been able to play in the Fall. He met all of those conditions.

Exactly. The timing of the incident was key and the punishment was adequate, IMO.

In the immortal words of Ken 'Hawk' Harrellson--they gone, my problem is the shear stupidy of theses guys and the act of disrespect to the team and school. Now Notre Dame fans can really say we're on par with sec talent, and all the other teams around the country will say 'see Notre Dame's just as bad as everybody else'. Send them packing to Blinn J C. in Texas. This was really a horse^%$# act by these guys. I hope all this is untrue and over amplified- if not its a very bad act.

Some hurt at depth but we still have a lot of our studs. When the injury bug hits the team midseason we will be wishing we still had these guys but we can still have a decent year. I do believe the owner of the weapon and someone who assaulted a cop should be kicked out.

Look in the Butler thread, it doesn't sound as simple as just assaulting a cop

Smoking weed was widespread back in my day, in a parochial high school. It was more widespread than most "uninformed" people knew. That was many years ago. I am part of the "uninformed" crowd now. I have no idea how many young folks are doing it or have tried it. My guess is somewhere around the same percentage. Maybe more now that it starting to gain legality. It was very illegal back in my day and a large percentage of youth "chanced" it. Smoking weed is not the end of the world and shouldn't ruin a young persons future, especially when considering this day and age. The gun is disturbing somewhat. Especially when considering this day and age. I still think it was just some kids with incredible, bad judgement. Guns were not as bad as weed back in my day. How times have changed. The combination of both is/was not good in any era.

It will be interesting how this turns out. Like I said, I don't think there was anything sinister going on here.

Interesting that Ashton White's parents are both police officers. They can't be happy.
