I'm (finally) looking into fitness devices. Just curious for opinions on what devices you guys like and what features you think are helpful/not helpful.

Based on what I want, I'm leaning towards the Fitbit Charge 2 or the Alta HR.

Thoughts?

I have a fitbit charge and the charge 2. I really like the display on the Charge 2. Both of my kids challenge my Wife and I daily in a step challenge. Alta is good to but I prefer fitbit. Neither will stop you from choking down a 3 pound burger though! Good luck.

i have a fitbit hr charge2 i believe something like that....i am an avid hiker so i personally really like it because i use my phone and an app on it to log my hike w/ gps but i also don't want to have to keep getting my phone out while hiking to see distance etc so its more convienant...but also it just helps as a reminder regarding your steps about being active/ or not....i wouldn't invest more than what i did 120.00 as i feel it is functional and good for the price but anymore money than that i don't feel the options available are worth the significant increase in money

Ive always found the home gym/exercise equipment to be junk. Most are poorly made and do not last very long. Secondly, I do not know of anyone who has such that actually uses it for very long.

Gym benefits: Getting out of the house, being in public setting (so piers see you and motivate you), better equipment

Home benefit: No gym travel time

I recall having a whole rack of dumbells up to 150 lbs, a smith machine, incline and flat bench as well as preacher curl bench in my garage. Hardly ever touched it. Yet I will go daily to the gym before work.

Go figure.

My hang up is the lack of GPS built in. That's annoying. But I really just want it to keep track of my activity. It's not making me go the gym or anything, but it helps me know whether I'm being sedentary.

And I'd be getting one through our fitness program at work and just paying the taxes on it next year.

The newer generations of the Iphones keep track on your movement pretty well. Its located in the activity tracker section of the health app for free with the phone.

Most people I know who have fit bits are out of shape and use them to say "I moved this much today. I deserve this junk food"

LOL! That's so true. It's the proof that you're trying, when you aren't trying...

But there are other people that are in super-awesome shape that use them because they are perfectionists and like to see their awesomeness expressed in yet another form.

Makes sense. I run and work out quite a bit and nobody I know who does the same uses these things. Thought it was because I'm over 40.

What are you wanting to use it for? Fitbit is more of an activity tracker and the charge is not awesome at keeping track of heart rate. I don't know much about Alta, but I would encourage you to pick a HR device or an activity tracker. Most don't do both super well. Everything garmin makes I've used and like/would endorse.

I have the Fitbit Charge HR and the only reason I wear it is because my wife and I are involved in a rewards program through her empolyer. We pay $10/mo to wear the monitor and each quarter you rack up points and literally earn cash back. So we pay in about $250 per year but can earn up to $1000 cash back. We use it entirely as fun money. Without that program, I probably wouldn't bother and would just upgrade my watch.
