Gonna necro this thread... we got any fishermen on the forums?

I have no experience surf casting. I'm looking to do some when I next go down to South Carolina. Anyone want to help me start at square 1?

Most surf casting on the east coast uses long rods, heavy sinkers, and long casts. It can be pretty dull if nothing is biting. Personally, if I were going back to SC, I'd hire a guide to take me inshore fishing for redfish, sea trout, flounder, and depending on the time of year, tarpon. It's more interactive as you will probably be sight fishing for reds in the flats. It's usually not just blind casting where you just cast as far as possible and wait. Plus the guides provide your gear so you don't have to buy anything.

Have been out numerous times ice fishing this year on the Saginaw River near Saginaw/Bay City. Have been ripping up the walleye. Caught about 100 between the four of us in about 5 hours one day (only 5 keepers). Walked about a mile and half out onto the Saginaw Bay today with my roommate just to get a little taste of it. We didn't get even close to where the hundreds of other people were at (3-5 miles out).

Anyone else having any luck ice fishing this year?

Since I have moved to Indy and became an auditor I dont get out in the winter like I used to (who needs audits done anyways).

A couple weeks ago I got out and finally convinced my fiance to go for her first time (we have been together for over 8 years).

It was a perfect opportunity though. Ice was solid and the front that came in was over cast and about 40* out.

She was a pro, didnt use a bobber and tight-lined the whole time. Her first fish through the ice was a nice 13' Crappie.

Very nice! I don't know how much ice the Indy area has but Lake Superior had about 18" yesterday. Try drilling multiple holes with a hand auger. Pain in the ass...

The pond my step dad went to other day was over 2 ft. He said he didn't move around too much.

Mother-in-law is cleaning the garage. Found an old (don't know the year) Johnson 6 outboard that from my recollection worked great for one summer, then hit or miss the following. We had it serviced and it's still giving us problems starting and idling. She wants it sold. Does anyone have a clue what this should sell for? I have a hard time believing anyone would pay for a motor that doesn't run soundly. But then again, I know some like to get a deal and fix it themselves. Literally any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Your Johnson outboard model number can usually be found on the nameplate located on the motor or the mounting bracket. The nameplate should contain a model number and a serial number. The model number will identify the year and certain details of that motor.

1980-Present: Johnson outboards from 1980 to present use a model number that will indicate the year & features of that motor. See the model number codes here.

Pre-1980: Johnson outboards prior to 1980 do not have a consistent model number code. See the model number information below.

Found this on marineengine.com - hope this helps you to figure out a price.

On a side note, does anyone on here go fly fishing?

Do you know why it runs rough? Outboards last forever and the Johnson outboards are classic. Even not running, you should be able to get around $100 for it. Whoever worked on it might not have been able to get it running, by there are a lot of people that work on outboards a lot. Just because one guy wasn't able to get it going perfect with a service doesn't mean that it can't get repaired to top running condition. In fact, it is probable that it can be repaired. Outboards aren't very complicated.

Running well, $250-$350 for an old Johnson 6.

I'm not sure why it runs poorly. I don't know enough about marine motors (or motors in general) to give a proper diagnosis. My father-in-law changed out the gas and spark plugs, but other than that, I'm not sure he knew enough about it either. I thought about taking it to a different shop and if they can't fix it, then I'd list it online for $50-$100. The original marine mechanic supposedly "fixed it," but whenever we got it back on the boat, it either wouldn't start or it wouldn't idle, so idk what they did. It became such a headache, that we just took it off the boat and it's been on a rack in the garage ever since.

I could try running some new gas with STABIL through it and see if it cleans it out, but that's assuming I can get it to fire up.

Note: This is a motor that was bought used, sits in the garage at a lake house, would get very little use in the summer, and then sit all winter w/o being winterized. Basically, not properly maintained at all. BUT, with that said, you'd think after some TLC that it could be running like new again and that's been the problem....we can't get it to run, and when we do, it dies when you let off the throttle.

Put the Stabil in and blow out the carberator.

My discount rod and reel broke. Anyone have some websites they like to buy fishing gear off of? Trying to get ready for 4th of July week at the lake.

Any setup or brands that you recommend too? How are Pfluegers?

I know you can’t go wrong with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik.

American legacy fishing has decent used gear if that is what you are looking for.

Otherwise, depends on how much you want to spend. I like Dobyns rods and Shimano reels personally, but they can get pretty expensive if you get into some of their higher end products. I think Dobyns only sells from their website, but otherwise just google and find the best price from a reputable seller. A lot of places give a discount for your first purchase if you sign up for their email list, so that might be worth it for you. Pflueger is an excellent choice for a more cost effective option. I’ve had a few of their reels and rods in the past and have not had any trouble with them.

Shimano spinning reels at any of their price points are your best quality for price. Dont get caught up in total number of bearings.

Thanks guys. I went with an Ugly Stix Elite & a Daiwa Laguna LT Spinning Reel
You won't be disappointed with the reel. I'm in the process of changing out all my reels to daiwa. But when you have 25+ combos at 150+ a reel...it takes a minute...lol

HOLY SCHNIKEES!!!

WTF are they building baitcasters with nowdays? Unobtanium? The majority of they are $500+

No wonder I don't fish anymore, I can't afford it and didn't know it.

The Pfluegers Presidente is amazing. Love it and seems to be the middle tier in price. Great quality. Love mine. Great for the weekend warrior who wants to catch anything from bluegill to Walleye.

Are you looking for saltwater or fresh? If freshwater, there’s tons of options below that price point. Saltwater too, just not quite as many.

Thanks thread for inspiring me to drag my youngest one out on the lake this afternoon.

After all the pole and reel debate.

We use these with 2 lb test
Got like 10 of em at Ollie’s discount junk for $5 per. Work great and make a 5 lb largemouth or 10 lb channel cat feel like a marlin.

This was in my cart but my friends also recommend the Daiwa. Maybe that’ll be my 2nd reel if we make it that far.

Maybe we can post our fish on here this summer? A little revival to this oldie.

Just spent a week on Lake Oahe in South Dakota. Came home with a three man limit of 24 fish, nothing was smaller than 15 inches all week. Weather made things tough but we still got on em

I realize there are cheaper models but I was halfway through the list and still in the $400's. Range toppers were $750+

Thankfully I still have my late 70's Shimano Bantam and Daiwa from the early 80's that was the first model to use magnets. Haven't used them in 25-30 years.

The Shimano is a work of art.

I shop Tackle Warehouse a lot. They have decent deals. If you want a discount combo, just get an Ugly Stick at Walmart or something.

I could type a book regarding recommended setups, because it all depends on what you're fishing for, where, style, etc. Are you on the bank or in a boat? Around heavy brush, docks, mats, lily pads, or open water ledges? Top water? Jig? This all matters.

My go setups:
1) Crank baits
2) Spinner/Chatter/Swim baits
3) Top Water
4) Drop Shot
5) Texas Rig
6) Frog Rod w/ braid
7) Flipping Jigs w/ heavy flourocarbon

American legacy fishing has decent used gear if that is what you are looking for.

100% Dobyns + Shimano. Tackle Warehouse sells them.

My casting reels are all Lews.

This. I have Stradic Ci4 on all of my spinning gear. Lews for casting.
