I could type a book regarding recommended setups, because it all depends on what you're fishing for, where, style, etc. Are you on the bank or in a boat? Around heavy brush, docks, mats, lily pads, or open water ledges? Top water? Jig? This all matters.

2) Spinner/Chatter/Swim baits
3) Top Water
4) Drop Shot
5) Texas Rig
6) Frog Rod w/ braid
7) Flipping Jigs w/ heavy flourocarbon

Two places I know that are legal. Tres Rios at 91st tween Broadway and Baseline. The lakes around PIR. Besides that, this it’s fishing the reservoirs. Best spot I hear about is Alamo. Best crappie fishing in the country.

Any good beginner fly fishing rod/reel combo? Don’t want to break the bank but definitely interested in trying. Also is the fly fishing game in the mid west basically panfish with the steelhead runs?

What’s your budget and what species will you primarily target? I don’t know the Midwest well, but my general understanding is it’s more oriented towards warm water species like panfish and bass, but there’s exceptions.

Primarily bass and blue gill to start out. May try to hit the steelhead run once a year. And budget would like to stay under $150. Was at a fly shop out west and couldn’t believe the cost of some of the rods and reels.

Generally for bass, you'd want a 9 foot, 6 or 7 weight- if you wanted to fish for bluegill as well, I'd go with the 6 weight. You could also try the standard 9 foot 5wt, but you'll be a little undergunned if you hook into a nice bass. Steelheading is different game- you could go with a 7-9 wt rod, usually a 10 footer. Double handed rods and spey casting are also a thing depending on the stream. Point is, it's going to be difficult to find a rod that will effectively fish for all three species.

If you're willing to come up a little bit on price, the Redington Path and Orvis Encounter outfits are good options at about $200.
