Gonna necro this thread... we got any fishermen on the forums?
I have no experience surf casting. I'm looking to do some when I next go down to South Carolina. Anyone want to help me start at square 1?
Very nice! I don't know how much ice the Indy area has but Lake Superior had about 18" yesterday. Try drilling multiple holes with a hand auger. Pain in the ass...
Mother-in-law is cleaning the garage. Found an old (don't know the year) Johnson 6 outboard that from my recollection worked great for one summer, then hit or miss the following. We had it serviced and it's still giving us problems starting and idling. She wants it sold. Does anyone have a clue what this should sell for? I have a hard time believing anyone would pay for a motor that doesn't run soundly. But then again, I know some like to get a deal and fix it themselves. Literally any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Do you know why it runs rough? Outboards last forever and the Johnson outboards are classic. Even not running, you should be able to get around $100 for it. Whoever worked on it might not have been able to get it running, by there are a lot of people that work on outboards a lot. Just because one guy wasn't able to get it going perfect with a service doesn't mean that it can't get repaired to top running condition. In fact, it is probable that it can be repaired. Outboards aren't very complicated.
Running well, $250-$350 for an old Johnson 6.
I'm not sure why it runs poorly. I don't know enough about marine motors (or motors in general) to give a proper diagnosis. My father-in-law changed out the gas and spark plugs, but other than that, I'm not sure he knew enough about it either. I thought about taking it to a different shop and if they can't fix it, then I'd list it online for $50-$100. The original marine mechanic supposedly "fixed it," but whenever we got it back on the boat, it either wouldn't start or it wouldn't idle, so idk what they did. It became such a headache, that we just took it off the boat and it's been on a rack in the garage ever since.
I could try running some new gas with STABIL through it and see if it cleans it out, but that's assuming I can get it to fire up.
Note: This is a motor that was bought used, sits in the garage at a lake house, would get very little use in the summer, and then sit all winter w/o being winterized. Basically, not properly maintained at all. BUT, with that said, you'd think after some TLC that it could be running like new again and that's been the problem....we can't get it to run, and when we do, it dies when you let off the throttle.
American legacy fishing has decent used gear if that is what you are looking for.My discount rod and reel broke. Anyone have some websites they like to buy fishing gear off of? Trying to get ready for 4th of July week at the lake.
Any setup or brands that are recommend too? How are Pfluegers?
I know you can’t go wrong with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik.
Shimano spinning reels at any of their price points are your best quality for price. Dont get caught up in total number of bearings.American legacy fishing has decent used gear if that is what you are looking for.
Otherwise, depends on how much you want to spend. I like Dobyns rods and Shimano reels personally, but they can get pretty expensive if you get into some of their higher end products. I think Dobyns only sells from their website, but otherwise just google and find the best price from a reputable seller. A lot of places give a discount for your first purchase if you sign up for their email list, so that might be worth it for you. Pflueger is an excellent choice for a more cost effective option. I’ve had a few of their reels and rods in the past and have not had any trouble with them.
You won't be disappointed with the reel. I'm in the process of changing out all my reels to daiwa. But when you have 25+ combos at 150+ a reel...it takes a minute...lolThanks guys. I went with an Ugly Stix Elite & a Daiwa Laguna LT Spinning Reel
The Pfluegers Presidente is amazing. Love it and seems to be the middle tier in price. Great quality. Love mine. Great for the weekend warrior who wants to catch anything from bluegill to Walleye. My discount rod and reel broke. Anyone have some websites they like to buy fishing gear off of? Are you looking for saltwater or fresh? If freshwater, there’s tons of options below that price point. Saltwater too, just not quite as many.HOLY SCHNIKEES!!!
WTF are they building baitcasters with nowdays? Unobtanium? The majority of they are $500+
No wonder I don't fish anymore, I can't afford it and didn't know it.
This was in my cart but my friends also recommend the Daiwa. Maybe that’ll be my 2nd reel if we make it that far.The Pfluegers Presidente is amazing. Love it and seems to be the middle tier in price.
