Cole Kmet putting the double-move on Alohi

Chase Claypool posterizing Troy :headbang:

(Not worried about either of those DB's. They're covering freaks, and it's gonna make them better for it.)

The II guys reported that the Gilman Kmet battle is very fun to watch and Gilman more than holds his own (not every play obviously) by knocking down balls or knocking them up for INT’s.

I thought it was funny how they mentioned him being almost too physical at times. Gotta love that compete level.

Me too. I put his down for the leading tackler even though he will lose some snaps to the nickle at times. I figured he'd be able to stay out there more than we've seen Rovers do in the past because of his athleticism. What I'm really excited for is to see him behind the line of scrimmage making plus plays.

Guys at II don't think he'll be coming off the field in nickle. He might slide over and Bilal could come out.

Wow Pops. If they're better than 2015, you & I could probably handle Mike & Buck.

I hope you're right!

It might be superior to this one statistically but they sputtered a bit at the end. I think the 2019 edition's versatility is going to be yuge.

I get that too but he will lose snaps over the course of the season. ND's gonna have fresh, athletic legs at Buck that will get some of those snaps too. But I know he'll still be on the field in a lot of situations where they yanked Bilal last season.

I'm really excited to see a guy who can do what Tranquill did in terms of blowing up routes in the flats, but catching the ball and housing it instead of laying the lumber.

That's his nickname? Assumed it would be something JOKer related.

I don't think I'm as worried as most about LBs. I think we have the athletes / coach (Lea's specialty) to have a really good year. I anticipate some drop off, but not too crazy.

The aspect I worry most about at LB would be leadership/communication. Drue/Tevon were studs at that.

--side note, I'm mildly terrified of what may become of our punting/kicking game.

That's a good point with Lea. Based on what we saw last year, these guys will be prepared as humanly possible to play.

I'd be more comfortable with the LBers if they didn't lose the interior of the Dline as well. A guy like Tillery occupies space and blockers. A first round talent at DT makes it a whole lot easier to play LBer - a hot take, I know.

Prister just put up an article about how Lea is adapting for this year:
https://247sports.com/college/notre...ach-Sans-Veteran-Middle-Of-Defense-134261729/

Whereas Coney and Tranquill had developed their game/instincts to probe and find their opportunities to find gaps with Tillery and Bonner occupying a large portion of the opposing offensive lines, such a feel for the game is difficult with a young linebacker corps learning how the game flows at this level.

The response by Lea against the run is to make the linebackers a bit less discerning and probing while cranking up the aggression. That should make it a bit less cerebral than the approach employed by Coney and Tranquill while forcing opposing running games to kick it wide.

“Te’von instinctively, as the A gap was moving, would track the football and find a way to make a tackle,” Lea said. “So there were still vertical seams, not because of how we were playing the edges, but because we were a little more patient at the second level finding the football and we were able to hold up in front.

“What we need now is a little more vertical push from the linebackers to single the blocks at the line of scrimmage. The result should be to spray the ball out. You’re pushing it outside to your edge players who we think are really good, along with our safeties.”

For lack of a better, more technical term, Lea wants his young/inexperienced inside linebackers to “crash the party” up front to allow quality defensive ends Julian Okwara and Khalid Kareem to use their length/strength/experience to control the edge while utilizing different approaches with the cornerbacks and talented safeties in tandem.

Exactly. With as good as the defense was last year, the LB's as a group (rover included) had less TFL's and sacks than they did in 2017. Largely due to Bilal's lack of impact at the position. It's a position that is meant to make those plays. As you know, the Rovers at Wake Forest routinely were team leaders or close to in those categories. So, while we will undoubtedly give up performance at Mike/Buck, I expect it to be evened out to some degree with how much better Wu will be at Rover. And then in 2020, look out. He'll be coming for it all.

I was wondering if there were any reports on the legs of our kickers?

Jahmir Smith broke his hand in practice this week but is still practicing, per Freeman.

Only thing of note I've heard is that Bramblett has great hang time but isn't focusing on putting it deep necessarily. That's evidently by design from BK and Polian because they're confident in the coverage unit just as long as they have some time to get down there.

To add to this...

Kelly said that today is "FG day" - so we should find out some more info soon.

I take it Wu has made massive improvements in the off season. He was behind Asmar last year. Did he get on the field at all? I actually thought Moala was better during the BG game, but I will go back and have another look.

I've heard others say they thought Wu was the best linebacker, possibly best defender in the BG game.
