Carr for QB 2026!

It can't all be Okwara. The other side will have to bring the heat too, otherwise QBs will just roll away from him. They probably will avoid him like the plague anyway, which will make it hard to break the sack record.

Last season Okwara had 8 sacks. With how some are talking about Okwara has me asking the question. Could he make a run at Tuck’s single season sack record? Tuck had 13.5 in 2003. In 2012, Tuitt had 12.

It all depends on the rest of the DL. If the rest of our rotation, including Kareem, can get pressures, then Okwara hits 14+ this year.

Teams will have to leave a RB or TE to chip him and we'll need the other guys to eat that shit up so they can't solely direct their game plan around doubling Okwara. Our interior needs to shoot gaps and be disruptive and Clark Lea has to manufacture pressure with blitzes to keep teams from getting comfortable sliding protection to Okwara's side.

Multiple reporters are saying he has the fastest first step on the team. I'm finally buying into this hype.

Last year the punter was a captain.

And we went undefeated.

I think he destroys it. Would've liked to see him at 255 but I don't think it matters.

I've never seen someone at ND be that disruptive around the QB as he was last year. This year he closes out 10 of those near misses.

#Quinning.

Also, I bet Kmet doesnt play until October, potentially all of the way out to the Michigan game. I got $5 on it.

Julian is capable of breaking the sack record, however, since he'll becoming more from the edge (opposed to through the line) I think a lot of his effectiveness will be getting the qb to roll-out / throw it away.

Julian currently has 10.5 career sacks. The career sack record is 24.5, so if Okwara breaks the single season sack record, he will at least tie the career record.

I took out those posts... I was making a joke, but I don't want people to attribute something to Freeman based on a [bad] joke that I made lol.

Let's see what BK says about Kmet tomorrow at his presser.

Let's hope it is a quick heal... I had a broken collar bone before. It is a miserable time. I feel for the kid.

I was sarcastically flexing on you.

BK will make it seem like he's on track to be ready by Monday.

Aren’t most sack leaders edge defenders? If you look at the annual top 10 sack guys in both college and professional football, they’re mostly edge guys. I guess my point is it doesn’t stop those guys from getting sacks, it shouldn’t stop Julian.

Like others have pointed out, he'll need some help from the rest of the front 7 to get it done.

The offense should put up some points, forcing opponents to drop back more often than they'd like which will help too.

Hopefully he doesn't see the field in the second half against New Mexico or Bowling Green. He won't get many chances against Navy so he's got 10-11 games to pick up 14. It's possible.

Let me get on the hype train and say he will get three against New Mexico and two against BG.

I'm not sure if this had been discussed, but Drew White was the starting Mike. Didn't seem like he made a huge impact though.

Does anyone know the team sack record for a season? If Julian Okwara is going to demand a lot of double teams, will be interesting to see if Hayes, Kareem and Wu can make an impact as well.

It sounds like the plan is to try a bunch of different combinations at Mike & Buck.

It seems JOK has locked down Rover already.

Oh, and Pete Sampson had a lot of praise for Phil Jurkovec's performance.

Alohi Gilman is being moved around in a passing-downs package that essentially has him lining up as a LB, where he can rush, cover, or spy.

I love it. It's like peewee football where you run a Monster defense, putting your best kid outside of the alignment and letting him do whatever he wants to get to the ball.

Also notable: the coaching staff is already experimenting with trusting Hamilton to patrol the deep middle of the field on key downs, despite Gilman being a proven ball hawk in coverage.

Cornerback:

RS SO Avery Davis
SO Tariq Bracy
FR KJ Wallace
FR Isaiah Rutherford

Safety:
SR Jalen Elliott
RS JR Alohi Gilman
SO Houston Griffith
RS FR DJ Brown

So 13 DB's is fine to go into a season with, but there's a big issue at safety if anything were to happen to the starting safeties. I think Houston Griffith being cross-trained (or trained at safety cause idk the split of reps between CB and S) is a good idea because they're gonna need Griffith and Hamilton as backups for the two starters cause I haven't heard close to anything on DJ Brown and Litchfield Ajavon is not ready for Power 5 football apparently and still has a ton of learning to do. Allen's departure is highlighting the fact that they need to get A LOT more bodies into the 2020 class at DB. There's a possibility that ND loses Troy Pride, Donte Vaughn, Jalen Elliott, Alohi Gilman and Shaun Crawford after this season and they'd be down to 8 scholarship DB's!!! They need a solid 6-8 dudes coming in for DB this cycle. They obviously won't take 8 DB's, but maybe you'll see a transfer or something cause they've got a nice start with 3 DB's in the class, but they need a whole heck of a lot more and hope that 1-2 of them could contribute right away hopefully.

This is beautiful music to my ears. Now I just need to hear Kmet superglued his collarbone back together and he's ready for week 1.

or that Takacs and Tremble are taking monster steps with Kmet to look like future HOFs.

Is Griffith confirmed as cross training? Heading into camp he was a frontrunner to start opposite Pride, but now it seems like Vaughn is making that spot his own. Crawford is being trained at CB and S but I haven't seen that said about Griffith, though I do agree it would be a good idea.

I realize Allen had grown into more of an LB than a safety but looking at that depth chart makes me worry next year’s gonna be rough.
Not that safety is an easy position to walk in and play as a true freshman but I can not understand how a top-tier recruit doesn’t look at that depth chart and come running to South Bend.

I remember watching Julians High school tape and thinking to myself "this kid is a 3 star? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 what a steal" I was very impressed and couldnt believe he was that low. I remember when Romeo was recruited and thought he would be special too, he was very good for the Irish but not this good. Then I realized Romeo was 16 when he got to ND and know wonder hes taken the next step in the NFL. Ive been rooting for them both ever since and Julian has already exceeded my high expectations. This kid can ball.

I thought the coaches have been praising DJ Brown since he was working on the scout team last fall. Keep in mind Brown’s best asset is extremely high football IQ, which obviously bodes well for safety position in this defense. I think the coaches feel extremely comfortable with Brown being the first or second safety to come in off the bench in meaningful minutes. And also to start next year alongside Hamilton.

I could be completely wrong and making that all up in my head. And the staff doesn’t trust DJ, which is why Crawford is playing some safety. Crawford at safety could be Bob Sanders 2.0?

Lol, is this a joke? Crawford is the most oft-injured player on the team. Crawford has a small frame, Bob Sanders was short but 210+ lbs of heat-seaking muscle.

They share one fact: they've both often succumbed to injuries but Crawfords injuries are fluky and Sanders were from incredible wear and tear and not knowing how to hit someone at speeds <100%.

Sanders would've never played nickel, he was a downhill safety.

Re: DJ Brown, I hope he continues to grow because I have no idea how much the coaches trust him. i think we know who our top 3 safeties are and if Houston moves back to safety, we probably know who our top 4 safeties are.

CAPTAINS

This is an awesome group of captains. Crazy to see that both safeties are captains. Ian Book is the first QB captain since??

I figured it would be either Chris or Clay. Can't go wrong with either. Maybe with Chris' "path" to where he is, it gave him that extra boost.

Surprised to see Hainsey ahead of Eich and Kraemer, he's in line to be a 2 year captain, 4 year starter

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think DJ Brown has been full go at camp. He might have some minor injury if I’m remembering reports accurately
