I would love a Besler-Gonzalez pairing. I like John Brooks a ton and think he is going to be an amazing player for the US but that Besler Gonzalez pairing was unstoppable in world cup qualifying in 2013

idk who you roll with in the knockouts if not Brooks... my best guess is it's Omar and Brooks the rest of the way...

But isn't he suspended due to accumulation of yellow cards?

I hope it didn't seem like I was saying that Brooks should be benched. He's looked pretty good in what I've seen of this tournament.

Well, better now than two games from now I guess... so they hold on to Alvarado.

The thing is, we needed sterling..we need to fill the homegrown quota, and there aren't a whole lot of homegrown players out there who could sniff our first team. Sterling is arguably an immediate upgrade over Jesus Navas, and adds a ton of pace to a side that desperately needs it. Now, no way in hell is sterling worth 50 mil, but we can afford it and he was a must get so we didn't have much of a choice.

He just better learn how to fucking finish.

Right, I think it's not a bad deal from the Man City perspective. They don't care what they spend there, and the sky is the limit for Raheem Sterling. He's the future of English football. Get him while the getting's good. Sterling is not a finished product, his finishing leaves a lot to be desired, but there is no question that he has game-breaking ability.

But this is what kind of burns me up about the Sterling saga, from the LFC perspective:

Liverpool didn’t make Sterling a gifted player. He already had a marvelous mixture of speed, balance and intuitive daring when he had the ball at his feet.

But Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers took to him like a father and guided him, accelerating him onto the first team with Steven Gerrard, Suárez and the rest.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/15/s...-is-flowing-out-of-liverpool-not-in.html?_r=0

There's some truth to that. Rodgers played Sterling out of position as a false 9 for half the season to try to develop him as a striker. No matter what happened, Rodgers always looked for a way to feature Sterling, even when Sterling struggled to finish or failed to make an impact in a central role. And how did Sterling reward Rodgers's faith in him? By enlisting his A-hole agent in using "every trick in the book to get his client from Liverpool to Manchester." Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Morris has been poaching some good goals lately... roll with him...

I like Gordan as a Galaxy fan, but as also a Galaxy fan seeing him play for the US in an important competition scares me...

Klinsy on the changes:

ussoccer.com: Jozy was still in the process of coming back from injury when the camp started, and the staff has been monitoring him from the beginning. What have you seen that led you to make the change for Alan Gordon?
JK: We believe that Jozy’s just not there yet. Jozy never really got into this tournament and never really picked up the rhythm. He’s just simply not in the shape right now to help us. For Jozy it’s just simply going back to Toronto, picking up his rhythm, getting in shape, working on his fitness and then he will start scoring goals again. That’s why Alan Gordon was on the standby roster from the beginning and that’s why we brought him in. He’s fully fit, he’s so full of energy, he scores goals with the Galaxy, and he fits in right away. He’s a pure giver to the group, and he might be a player that can make a difference at any second when you bring him in.”

ussoccer.com: Having the opportunity to make changes, you start with four-time World Cup veteran DaMarcus Beasley who captained this team to the Gold Cup title in 2013. How valuable is to have a player of his ability and experience in a tournament?
JK: Having DaMarcus come into the team is huge, because of his character, his giving nature, the spirit he brings, but also the high quality he brings. He brings a lot of experience into this group, and he’s hungry. He’s still as hungry as day one in his career. That speaks for us having him back in the group and now it gives us a couple of different options on how to put pieces together. We’re very happy to have Beas back. With Greg Garza it’s tough. It hurts when you have to tell a player that they’re not part of the final stage of the competition. Hopefully he joins us in Philadelphia for the final to be with the group again. He’s an emerging player. Greg Garza is there for the future. He’s only getting better. He’s done tremendously well these last two weeks, he knows that he has to grow more, get more experience and it’s as simple as that. It’s why we made the switch. It’s really fun to work with Greg. He has a great character, a great attitude every day – he gives you everything. For him it was another step in the right direction for the National Team and he totally understands that we want to switch it for right now.”

ussoccer.com: Where do you see Alfredo Morales at this stage, and what does Joe Corona bring to the table?
JK: “The switch with Alfredo to Joe Corona is a little bit because Alfredo is still on the rise. He is becoming a very strong player. He had a good year with Ingolstadt, he moved up to the first division in Germany, was their player of the season pretty much, but he’s still in the process to become a part of our team in the fine tuning element. There are certain things that just don’t click yet, and it’ll just take a little bit of time. Right now in the tournament, we don’t have that time. In the tournament now we need to produce results and get things done. With Joe we have that option to bring him in now. He knows CONCACAF inside out. Joe Corona is very experienced in playing against the teams from the Caribbean and Central America. He’s a player that can also help us, here and there, to hold the ball better, to take care of the ball. With his great technique, with his one-touch passing, he makes things very easy and simple. I think it’s a great opportunity to have Joe back, even if it hurts a little bit for Alfredo, but that’s just part of the game.”

So the outrage today tends to be that Chandler is still with the team... I mean a number of peps have not played to their normal output in this one, TC included,... I don't get the Chandler specific hate

I wanted him out at halftime last night. That was an atrocious half.

Jamaica won their group... I have to say though, if I may judge a book completely by the cover,... Their coach is the least 'soccer coach' looking dude ever....

BTW, I'm so f'in glad Altidore is gone. That dude pisses more off more than just about anybody and believe me, there are more than a couple of US Men's soccer players that piss me off.

Yeah, it seems crazy, right? I guess the only thing you can say in defense of it is that Sterling is only 20 and the sky's the limit for him, in terms of his potential. Might seem like a bargain in a few years.

We're not a soccer nation yet Camper. We're just not. Things are trending, but when you look at other nations, where school is not as important and getting a spot in a soccer academy is EVERYTHING, it is much easier to find and nurture talent.

It's coming though. You see it in all those kids playing in Europe who are choosing to play for the U.S. (midfielders, mostly though). But until we get Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Spud Webb, Barry Sanders, whatever...that SPECIAL athlete that will play soccer full time, it's going to be tough. I'm still waiting for that one kid in East L.A. or wherever, with soccer in his veins (and as a teacher, you know how those kids feel about soccer), and an incredible gift to play the game, to emerge and choose the US.

To make you feel better though, Brazil's best striker (excluding the incredible Neymar) is playing for Spain (Costa), and after that, they have friggin' Fred and Jo, two absolutely putrid strikers. BRAZIL!!!! It's unbelievable. I might even take Wondo over them. (OK, I lied, but you get my point.)

So the outrage today tends to be that Chandler is still with the team... I mean a number of peps have not played to their normal output in this one, TC included,... I don't get the Chandler specific hate

I've just never liked him, from the jump when he wouldn't accept being called up, to when he finally did accept it, he absolutely stunk up the field. He's just not very good IMO. But yes, the narrative is becoming, "We suck bc TC is out there," when in reality, there is plenty of blame to go around. Starting with Klinsmann starting Wondo last game. WTF Klinsmann???????????????????????????

You need a different type of mentality to be a striker. Look at Tevez, Suarez etc and to a lesser extent Robbie Keane these guys grew up in poverty and have that chip on their shoulders/will to win that is engrained in them during their upbringinings. You aren't gonna develop this instinct playing in prep schools and then at the likes of Duke, UNC and ND. Until soccer really takes roots in American working class communities and there is a "straight to the Pro's" system in place like in other continents you won't see these types of guys come through.

You can't tell me that LA Galaxy team wouldn't finish above relegation zone in all the top leagues

Robbie Keane, Dos Santos, Zardes, Omar, Pinedo, Juninho, Gerrard, Lletget, and AJ DeLaGarza are a damn good core of the team. Even Robbie Rogers and Villarreal have had good years for them. Maybe not mid table in EPL, but I don't see this team losing to a Hull City, Burnley, QPR. Hell they would even beat Sunderland, Newcastle and few others at the bottom. I guess their biggest struggle would be depth. But that starting lineup is as quality as you are going to see in MLS.
