He doesn't need to. He is a lock for the world cup roster. Gold Cup in the years winning doesn't matter is a tryout for the world cup roster. Hence players like Donovan, Cherundolo, Stu Holden, and many, many young players being on it, and players like Dempsey, Altidore, Timmy Chandler, Bradley, and other regulars being left off it.

Gooch and Bocanegra are tentatively on the rosters LOL.

9 out of 9 points! Awesome.

To me that's bullshit... I doubt highly doubt Chic or dos santos will sit it out... If they aren't trying to win the damn thing then don't even show up...

I thought Zusi was great tonight. Most of our chances came through him. I would not bench him for Landon. If Landon wants to play take out Eddie Johnson (who played well), or leave out Landon.

I thought Altidore played well. I was impressed with his finishing ability (which it seems he lost for a while), but especially his ability to hold the ball and lay it off for someone else (and then make a run into the box w/o the ball). Dempsey was a bit disappointing with his finishing and distribution. It looked like he was trying a bit too hard to me. He is still the best player on the roster (save maybe Howard).

In the middle: Bradley is really the centerpiece. He is really playing well. He really dictates our style. I liked his runs with the ball and his distribution was on again tonight. Versus Panama we saw Cameron with Jermaine Jones out. Tonight Jones started and was weak IMO. He gave the ball away far too much and wasn't on the same page with Bradley. He made a couple of nice runs, but lacked finishing touch. I'd rather he played a more defensive role. His defending was also poor. His challenges a bit rash at times. I think Cameron has more to offer, and hope we gets some time in the Gold Cup. It will be interesting to see was happens here. I thought Cameron played a couple of good balls when he came on late (though he made 1-2 poor plays as well).

Defensively, Fabian Johnson does well going forward, and the back line is solid if a bit slow on the wings. Besler had a couple of nice tackles, and Gonzalez was good with his head, but they [all 4 of them] still don't give me a lot of confidence. They are solid vs Concacaf teams, but versus top Euro squads? Eh. They seem to wait for the opponents to try to force something and aren't winning the ball as much as I'd like. It may hurt them versus teams that are better in the final third.

Howard still is Howard. He is really solid. No questions asked. He'll be ready to go in Brazil.

I looked through some others player rating of last night past and noticed some big differences between different people ranking on guys like Besler and E. Johnson. So, I put this together to get a better picture (click to enlarge the picture, so it easier to read).

Not surprising Altidore had the best rating. Zusi and Fabian Johnson who lead passes led to the goal are the next two highest rated.

There was a huge rating difference for Eddie Johnson (3 point difference) and Matt Besler (2.5 point difference). Eddie Johnson and Jermaine Jones had the lowest ratings averaging about 4.7 a point below the average.

I am not sure if its just USA and Mexico who do this, because honestly I did not follow soccer well enough in 2009 to remember what they did. All I remember is Mexico beating USMNT in the final 5-0...

The Gold Cup is a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Confederations Cup held every two years. Kind of a mini World cup. Last time Mexico beat us 4-2 and 5-0 and we did not go to Confederations Cup. The time before that we won it and ended up beating Spain and then lost 3-2 to Brazil in the final. That was an awesome time for USA soccer. Then Bob Bradley became a dumpster fire.

So to sum up depending on whether it is leading up to a world cup or not, the USA cares and other times it does not.

Brazil is on the brink of civil war... Okay that is an exaggeration but the people are pissed right now. Here is a decent video explaining.

I was hoping Shunsuke Nakamura would get one more knock with the International squad but I guess he's done...

Impressed with Japan. A really entertaining game; though I was rooting for the underdog Japan, I'll take Mexico being eliminated (I thought they played better today. More up-to-par anyway). Japan or Mexico being the weakest team in one group is crazy, though I guess Tahiti is the only weak team (though I bet Nigeria would get beat by Japan and Mexico).

Anyway about the Gold Cup: this year it is not a qualifier for the Confed Cup. The Gold Cup is every other year and the Confed's Cup every four years, so every other Gold Cup is a qualifier for the Confederations Cup. So, it is not a huge deal this year, but I would like to see us gel and get some PT for guys on the back line.

They just changed the Gold Cup's qualification. Now the winners of 2013 and 2015 will play a match to decide who goes to the 2017 Confederations Cup. Basically, if the USA wins this time they will have 2 chances to beat Mexico.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Pretty good move as it gives significance to both Gold Cups. I'm guessing if you win both there wouldn't be a playoff. Thanks for the info.
