you can find highlights on the NFL youtube page anytime you want though. they need the personalities to create "original content". People don't watch ESPN/SC for highlights anymore

I disagree. I don’t want to to go to my computer and click on different links. I’d rather turn on my tv in the morning and watch sportscenter with a lukewarm host.

Ex. When analysis is provided, in short, I’d rather listen to Todd McShay who has no huge personality than Mel Kiper.

I DON’T watch sportcenter because I don’t want to go 20 minutes without seeing a real highlight. Or care what schtick Barry Melrose has for the 3 minutes of NHL coverage.

EDIT: color commentators is a different story, I’m talking their shows and the hosts.

im with STL on this. i couldnt believe getting home after ND vs Temple, hoping to catch highlights of opening week of all the games to only find special interest stories and hot takes on social issues. lame.

Agreed, I can do without all the political or special interest stuff.

go on youtube then. get youtube app on your smart tv if you have to

Except for CFB & CBB, I stopped watching ESPN years ago. Once in a while I will flip on SC to get highlights, but that's all I'm wanting to see.

You can put on 5, 5 or 7 shows where people debate and argue, but it tends to blend together, so what you're left with is basically the same show over and over. Like my wife, I get tired of hearing her whining after 30 seconds and tune her out. It's the same on ESPN. Love you honey!

Anybody give Barstool Van Talk a chance last night?

I go to bed too early to watch it live, and I have Sling so I can't DVR it, but gonna watch the replay at some point today at work.

If you're familiar with PMT, you will definitely enjoy it. Watched it this morning. I think with this being their first episode on TV ever, there are definitely some kinks to work out, but it they will be fine. Still some very funny scenes. And if you watch with a dog in the room, prepare for it to attack your TV when Big Cat impersonates Boomer

Watching it now.

There are going to be some "clunker" segments, with the way their humor plays over dead-air on TV as opposed to radio. Dead-air on radio adds to comedic timing, but it's not great on TV if there's no audience to react.

Guy-Lights was good. The Van segment with SVP was amazing. I liked "Talk About," which works really well with TV. I also liked the back-and-forth on bad words. Watching PFT's mouth get blurred out as he said "Feet" on behalf of Rex Ryan was amazing.

I cried tears when they were opening the box at the end of the episode. "That's gonna set a bad standard."

I am trying to figure out if that was actually a dead octopus. I feel like there is no way ESPN would be okay with that, but these guys made fun of ESPN during the show multiple times so who knows.

Factually untrue. ESPN has two main revenue streams. Affiliate revenue, which you're describing, is one of them. But ad sales is still huge.

What is factually untrue? Do you not have to include ESPN in your basic cable in most areas ? If notin the basic tier then you must pay for it to get local sports networks. My 70 year old mother pays for it and has never viewed its content. This model is shared by all the 24 hour news stations that are only watched in airports and doctors offices. These channels average under 500k viewers, a number that would get a show canceled on UPM or the WB. They are absolutely living off unearned income. Without it ESPN could never overpay for the NBA games that 90 per cent of the country dont watch.

BVT got cancelled.

Apparently ESPN didn’t foresee BARSTOOL Van Talk to be associated with BARSTOOL.

Idiots.

I only watch ESPN if there is an ND game on. Nothing else I really care about on there anymore. They kinda suck.

Google "Barstool pumpkin tweet." I'm pretty sure that's what did it.

Isn’t it more likely that a group lead by Sam Ponder stated their case over the past week, and wore Skipper down?

Related would be ESPN getting pressure from the NFL after Goodell realized a major partner was harboring enemies of The Shield.

I think this combo is correct which further shows the poor leadership and lack of direction at ESPN right now. They managed to annoy both sides somehow which is actually impressive. Partner with the divisive/controversial company and take flack, then cancel the show and get called anti-PC.

The thing that baffles me is that the larger Walt Disney Company is so good at this stuff. The Parks and Resorts segment is hugely popular with evangelical Christians and gay groups alike. With the exception of the fringe racist alt-right people, everyone loves Star Wars and, to a lesser extent, Marvel. If anything, ESPN should have an easier job because they don't have to please everyone like Disney (the brand) does. They only have to please sports fans.

I usually find Michael Rapaport annoying but he brought up a decent point I had considered with Barstool/ESPN. Basically said fine ESPN don’t ask Barstool to be on our podcasts anymore to get ”street cred”.

If you look at PMT guests the months leading into BVT, lot of ESPN employees. Like a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was part of the agreement of the show. You’re on ESPN, we’re on Barstool.

Now ESPN pulling BVT is a shady ass move even more if you think about it.

What is Barstool? And why are they being tweeted about so much lately? I don't understand who they are or what their purpose is. I get they signed some contract with ESPN then got fired, but I know nothing about them.

Barstool is the #1 (in terms of page views and total subscribers) sports-entertainment blog and podcast network with the #1 sports podcast in the world and the #5 podcast in the world (Pardon My Take). People get mad because they make jokes and like to look at hot girls.

So they're dirty, based on what you described and their title. I like.

So Barstool is the internet blog, and Pardon My Take is the podcast? But same people doing both?

Considering what I assume to be your age group, I’m rather surprised you haven’t come across Barstool way more Koon.

I'm 31. I follow one of them on Twitter for last few months because I knew they became popular. but maybe I just don't notice or aren't on enough, but I guess I haven't really noticed them on Twitter.

sounds like their best work isn't on Twitter so maybe that's why they haven't stood out to me.

One of the things I hate about PC culture is that we're supposed to pretend that people shouldn't like funny jokes and hot girls. That it's somehow bad and crude and unacceptable.

As people tune out ESPN and tune in to Barstool, maybe ESPN should reevaluate who they're catering to (hint: mostly straight, young-to-dad-aged dudes).

Right smack in the target age group.

The rise to relevance came with Twitter and blogs about literally anything sports entertainment related. Podcasts are when they blew up. Big Cat and PFT are their biggest twitter personalities and podcast (Pardon My Take) and arguably the biggest influencers of ttheir target age group that exist today. But you can find “bloggers” for Barstool that blog/have podcasts/tweet about literally any topic and represent most major cities. A D.C. guy, a fashion podcast, CFB guy etc etc.

there's fansites for specific teams/cities on barstool including Notre Dame.

TBH the main thing i like about BS are Pat McAfee's video tweets on NFL special teamers on sundays. they are gold
