This is a pleasant surprise....Mark May talks nice about ND.

EDIT from staff: I deleted the video b/c it MIGHT (but probably not) have caused some delays with the site. I'll put it back up when everything is settled. Thanks.

He had a lot of good things to say today on CFB Live. Seems to really like Kelly.

Yeah, I've tried looking at this post numerous times and haven't been able to see anything.

Mark May has never said anything negative about ND THAT WE DIDN'T DESERVE AND WASN'T TRUE!
He is not a fan but an honest critic.
I remember when Chris Collinsworth was the NBC color man for the ND games, the same criticism was thrown at him; what he said was true. As for him not liking ND, his son is here now.
I suspect that Mark May would be thrilled if his children attended and were successful at ND (or Pitt, for that matter.)
Mark May is not paid to hate ND, but to give his honest opinion about the state of the program.
And he has done just that.

This. He also had a knack for being right when he called upsets or called something out.

He was all upbeat on ND today, saying we were set up for a great season and victory over Navy.

I hate Mark May like I hate USC fans. However, I do have to respect him for the fact that he is never ridiculous with his analysis. Just like I have to respect USC when we have no chance of beating them because they are just "That GOOD" .... ugh ... happy 4th

As an "old timer," you don't know how much it hurts me to hear these words. (I read aloud in my head.)

"Back in the day," Navy was just a splattered bug on ND's windshield.

He is usually spot on with charlie as our coach he thought we were terrible and we were going to be terrible with BK as our coach he has optimism for good reason BK has shown results and improvement

Mark May does not like Notre Dame but he respects Kelly and he will not be stupid-they are about to change the win loss column bigtime.

Mark May was not some unbiased critic who called it right... he was a guy who had us going 0-5 out the gate from day one of Weis, then gave zero credit for anything when he was wrong two years running... called us unworthy of BCS bids without saying who should be there in our place... demolished us week in and week out even in ten win years... I'll never forget when ESPN did a blind study of Wisky and ND (only two teams in any real consideration for a BCS spot) in 06 and compared after May went on a tanget of how unworthy ND is of anything,... it was CLEAR team 'A' was the better choice... he agreed... then when shown that team 'A' was Notre Dame he just boiled and said nothing... not one word. The guy picks us to win X amount of games every year and then picks us to lose every single game saturday to saturday...

honestly after a year or so it didn't even bother me... but it does strike me to hear ND fans say he was just a guy who got it right, like we just can't take a critic... dude was not a critic, he was a week in week out hater of a top 25 program.

I don't know if he hated Weis or is he was just told to hate on ND to get people watching... but he was often wrong in cartoonish style without back tracking ever... and when he was right, which he was here and there also, he never let off... he was a hater... plain and simple. Since the moment Weis left he seems to have either relented or simply been told by the powers that be to find another angle.

May has been a topic of controversy on this site for some time now. The biggest part of me wants to believe that it's mostly schtick, ESPN is in the business of ratings(like every other network) and his rants about ND get them.
I do however believe that he was not a fan of ND under Weis.

IMO there are only two reasons MM has a somewhat new found love of ND, he either really believes in us or he's putting us on a pedestal so he can tear us apart if we don't live up to expectations.

I honestly do believe he had an issue with the Weis hiring if not Weis himself... the hate literally began the first time CFL talked about ND's up coming hope for the season in year one of CW... before that episode I didn't even know who the heck he was... and it almost completely ended last year.

though it certainly could have been the producers at ESPN just finding anyone to play the role...

Personally I feel he was just playing a role, even though I have been very critical of him at times. I just don't believe that it's a coincidence that the one ONE guy at ESPN who all of us seem to hate is sitting right next to Lou Holtz.

Love that he's being called out. Sucks that it's on Deadspin where no one will take it seriously. Or read it at all for that matter...

Huh? Tons of people read Deapspin and take it seriously. Who would you rather see run this story? This is right up their alley

Six months ago we all wanted to kill Deadspin with fire for its lack of journalistic integrity. Now you want to sing its praises? Which one is it?

I was not a part of that "we" and even if I was could I not criticize them for doing something poorly and praise them for what they do well? There is a quite a difference in my mind between investigative journalism and a piece aimed at calling out a troll for blatantly lying. The general disdain for Notre Dame on that site notwithstanding, Deadspin is a quality source of content

Yeah, I wanted to kill Deadspin with fire, but it can't be said they didn't have journalism integrity. It's not like they're the equivalent of the Onion or ESPN when it comes to misinformation, jokes, or lack of journalism integrity. c wut i did ther?

We can because it is a different article. They wrote an article about Teo based on rumors and unsubstantiated "facts" which attacked Teo personally. This is a simple article with simple facts.
