they are lying.... I used to work for a cable company

Curious as to how they are lying? Are they telling me my rate is going to go up, but I cancel the phone anyways and my next bill is less then they say? I would love to see something like that.

What is an android box?

Its like Apple TV only in the Android environment. You can stream just about anything and everything. Old movies, new movies, old TV shows, current TV shows. Anything. Initial cost is the box and a decent internet connection.

On the phone topic, I pay less than $3/month for my own voip service with a metric shit ton more features that MaBell wants to pillage your wallet for.

I just like having a home phone.

I don't like the monopolies either, especially when local governments have granted regional monopolies by force of law and specifically prohibit competition. But Sling hasn't changed anything. It's a response to change, not a cause of change.

How much has deregulating cable driven down consumer costs with all that freed up competition? I hate to think what my cable bill would be without market competition in my region.

Of course they are going to tell you that your rate is going to go up. They work on commission and the more people who disconnect products the less their payout is. If you get someone good on the phone they will take phone off and rework your package.

Saving a small amount of monthly money doesn't sound like it's worth the hassle of stringing up your TVs with antennas and paying 3 different sources a small fee and dealing with streaming of channels.

I'd rather just pay the $155 through one provider, get a modem, get good internet, and have 5 rooms running solid cable with easy use but that's just me.

Ya. It depends on the user.

I cut the cord to cable a couple of years ago and it changed how I consume video and what I now look for in content. I think the reason why people <s>watch</s> sit mindlessly in front of the TV for so many hours is that most of the time they are just flipping channels looking/hoping to find something interesting. I much prefer to binge watch.

During the season when the networks put out new content, we watch all of the shows in a sitting or two. e.g. Friday night in with takeout. For the awesome shit that Neflix puts out we bings on those a couple of weekends a year. Because of this, many nights the TV is never turned on.

I also think it's important for me to spend my money with content creators rather than distributors. In part because I hate cable companies but also in part because I like the Netflix model of content creation.

About the only thing I watch 'live' outside of sports is Game of Thrones and that is only because assholes spoil that stuff online. If nobody talked about it I would binge watch the entire season on a Saturday. Pretty much what I do for Homeland.

It also helps that I have close to 700 movies on my home network.....

I have to imagine it is cheaper, we have just never found that right person that will take it off and make it cheaper, whether we are renegotiating or calling to cancel and they are trying to get us to stay. I talked to someone the other day that said the physical locations where you talk directly to someone is a lot easier to negotiate the terms.

for comparison purposes we should be thinking:

TV
Internet
Phone
all above thru one provider (I.e. TWC, Comcast, Cablevsion etc)

also figure in:
multi room DVR
at least 3 boxes

for me, all in, on above I'm paying $260 per month for above with the cable tv pkg that gets everything.

I know I am probabaly way overpaying. when I did deal on above I got all above for 129 month but that expired about 8 minths ago.
I have Comcast Xfinity. 2 HD DVR's, high speed Internet, and home phone all for $125. I was told when the 2 year price runs out don't call the customer service center, call and ask for your regional rep. That is the only person with the power to adjust your price. I've done that before and told them to shut it off as I was going with another provider and my price dropped 3 times before the call was done.

It is, I worked in a retail location and it is harder for us to give you the run around in person because we don't want to see you come back in the door all pissed off. And if you want a bigger discount talk to a manager they hate dealing with customers and will give you anything to get you out of there.

Is there a way to see which channels you view the most? My wife likes to make the argument that she "needs and watches all the channels," but my hunch is she really only watches about 10 channels.

Since we've been derailed into talking about cutting the cable cord, does anyone have a good suggestion for a router to support streaming Netflix/Hulu/SlingTV content?

I was going with a Roku. I'm looking for a good physical router to pair with a modem.
Do you not have a wireless router currently? You don't need anything special for the Roku. It connects to your normal WiFi network.

I'm prepping for cutting the cord and I want my own modem and router. Currently I'm leasing a gateway from TWC.

Everything I'm reading says that separate modem and router is a better option because it's easier to fix if something goes wrong. I already have a good modem I'm going to invest in, just looking for a router to pair with it.

My sentiments exactly, I don't have the patience nor the wherewithal to jump through all those hoops.
Just pay Comcast and be done with it.

Most quality Wi-Fi manufacturers have decent equipment. The Linksys WRT1900ACS and Netgear Nighthawk X6 are two of the better ones. They will have better range and have the latest Wi-fi security 802.11 b/g/n/ac.

I put a Roku on a TV in my office and looking into Sling box to have at home for my Roku to access for full cable. Seems like a possible fix for multiple TVs in a house if you aren't on more than one TV at a time. Very cheap solution for streaming games and golf into the office and maybe a little bit of Bloomberg and CNBC too. I guess I can also get the app on my phone so I can stream anywhere - my neighbor says he pairs that with a mini projector for when he travels globally (which is all the freaking time for his job).

Seems too good to be true.

Comcast can't lose. Even if content providers go direct-to-consumer over the Interwebz and cut out the distributors, Comcast and the distributors control the broadband, too.

Comcast won't lose until the wireless networks have enough speed and capacity to cut fiber and copper out of the equation entirely.

Which is physically impossible because not enough spectrum exists in the entire radio band. Landline Internet will never die.

ESPN Statement Regarding Nielsen - ESPN MediaZone

Nielsen Removes Nov. Cable Universe Estimates | Broadcasting & Cable

Nielsen now removes its November cable estimates; ESPN networks safe for now

Nielsen is investigating a larger than usual change in the November 2016 Cable Network Coverage Universe Estimates (versus the prior month). We take the accuracy of our data very seriously and are conducting a thorough analysis to determine whether or not there is an issue with these estimates. In the meantime, we have removed the November 2016 Cable Network Coverage Universe Estimates file from the Answers portal and ask clients not to use the numbers that were posted Friday. We are working closely with clients and will alert them on the findings of our internal review.

I hope it is true, but either way they are losing subscribers. Honestly if ESPN died tomorrow I wouldn't blink an eye. Whatever merit they had in the past is gone now and they're just a propaganda vehicle for whatever the SJW cause du jour happens to be at the moment.

They still produce the highest quality games outside of maybe NBCSN for hockey. They have a few great play-by-play guys and color commentators, especially in football. If you told me all those people and production crews left for another station that would be fine with me. But the last thing I would want is to see one guy go to Fox, another to CBS, and a third to NBC. Quality of college football, MNF, and NBA coverage would go way down as a whole.

College Gameday is a great show, and I think fantasy football coverage is excellent. 30 for 30s too.

I am one of the biggest ESPN haters out there but their problems are not wholistic.

ESPN:

Live Sports = On Fleek
Gameday = Acceptable Programming
30 for 30 = Yes Please
Literally Anything Else = 1/10 would not watch

Even SportsCenter is bad these days (and has been for a while IMO). I used to be able to keep SC on all day, on a loop, and not get tired of it, even if they didn't change mid-morning/early-afternoon segments for live interviews, because it was just a tremendous focus on the highlights and the gameplay... now it is something other, and the highlights are underwhelming and lack any depth at all.

I agree Sportscenter is unwatachable. Especially the late night Scott Van Pelt version. They stopped actually reporting sports news and now everything is a hot take or some non-sports charade like their WWE coverage*.

*I have nothing against WWE, I just don't think it belongs anywhere near a sports show.
