Good question. Please refresh my memory... what injury did he have before?

He had a pretty serious knee injury which cut short his senior high school season.

The article I read seemed to assume he was leaving b/c of a lack of opportunity to get on the field...if that were true, why does it say he remains enrolled? If he were ticked off about a lack of playing time and quit the team...he would lose his scholarship. However, if he is medically unable to play, he could continue to attend the university on a different scholarship and free up a football scholarship. That is the only scenario that would have him leave the team but remain enrolled.

The Chris Stewart [hilarious] joke bumbled about in my head and another thought came out. Kelly recruited Roback as an "athlete". He seems to be a "man-without-a-country" right now. His speed seems adequate for a back-up safety--is he just too big or not instinctive or what is a reason why someone like him would not be considered in a tight situation manpower-wise?

Any update on why he left the team? Is it due to academics? If it is academics why does this happen to all the corners...Gray, Walls

From the Eric Hansen, SBT, article LINKED:

ND Football Sports Information Director Brian Hardin confirmed Tuesday that Banks is no longer a part of the Irish football team, and that “privacy laws prohibit me from providing any additional details.”

... remains enrolled at Notre Dame for now, and a source close to the program said Banks' status could be reversed. The timetable for a permanent resolution appears to be late this week.

Failure to engage the textbooks at the line of scrimmage.

I vote for letting the soccer teams goalies try out for DB. They're used to the jumping and reaching for balls going for the top shelf and corners. I also vote to NOT let the lacrosse goalies try out for DB as most of them are as mobile as Sam Young.

and they use sticks, which would rather be interesting to see a DB running up and down the field will a stick in his hand and swinging it all over the place

Maybe it should be Manti heading into the backfield then, his arms are like tree trunks.

Give him 10 yards to line you up and there'd be nothing left of the receiver but a fine mist.

Derek Roback has now moved to safety

South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Battle for key No. 2 and No. 3 spots at quarterback is on

Freshman outside linebacker Derek Roback is now a freshman safety, another position where the Irish could use bodies.

"I would have been so far behind at linebacker, because I had never played it before," said the 6-3, 233-pounder from Waverly, Ohio. "At safety, I know at least the basics. I talked to (defensive coordinator Bob) Diaco about it, and we decided we would definitely try it out."

Per ISD

Per ISD

Brian Kelly said after practice on Friday that EJ Banks could be allowed back on the scout team this year if he is able to stay in school.

Curious.

That should rule out ResLIfe or he'd be suspended from any extracuricular activity not just a varsit sport. And if its academics or medical I don't see the difference from time/physical demands between being "on the team" and being on the scout team.

I suppose it's good news.

I was guessing an issue between him and the coaching staff, the "team rules" catchall but that doesn't jive with Kelly's comments in Brian Hamilton's piece, http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football/54355-ej-banks.html:

When asked whether sophomore cornerback E.J. Banks' predicament could be characterized as disciplinary, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly summed it up succinctly.
"Not by me," Kelly said after practice Friday. Regardless of the source, the end result is the same: As suspected, Banks will not play for the Irish in 2010. But according to Kelly, he may stay enrolled at Notre Dame and be reinstated as a scout team player. "I talked to his Dad - their intentions are to stay in school," Kelly said. "If that happens, then I'll consider putting him back on the team in a scout team capacity. But that's really their call."

Could it possibly be an NCAA Clearinghouse issue? Maybe not something in terms of a "violation" but maybe some i's didn't get dotted or t's didn't get crossed that would prevent him from being eligible this season and a scout team role is all that is available.

I have no basis for this or knowledge of anything, but if you rule out ResLife and rule out being disciplined by the coaching staff, that would leave the NCAA as one of the remaining possibilities for the issue IMHO.

That is another possibility. I believe Andy Wisne had a Clearinghouse problem in '98 and had to be held out. Clearinghouse questioned a course or grade on his transcript. ND Admissions was satisfied but it was between the NCAA and his high school to straighten out which they did. Back then it was reported that it was a Clearinghouse issue.

Glad to hear he's enrolled and hope this works out for him whatever the problem.

True... although fun fact of the day: our goalie last year, Scott Rodgers, could've played on our football team if he wanted. However, he chose to focus on lacrosse and not split his attention. Our coaches literally had to force him to tone down his lifting regiment because they worried if he got too big he would lose hand speed/reaction time to the ball.

6'4" 255 and benched well over 400 lbs and squatted well over 500. Would have played DL and been even bigger if he desired.

if it was clearinghouse, i think ND would have reported the issue...

justin utupo is sidelined now because of a transcript and it has been made public.
