See also: KOTOR. 94 Metacritic on the original and 86 on the sequel, with a Restored Content Mod that would have put the sequel in the 90s if the release hadn't been rushed. It's been twelve (!) years that we've been waiting for a third one. We're talking about one of the most highly regarded series from two (!) console generations ago and the most valuable IP in the history of mankind. We're begging EA to take our money and they're too stupid to figure that out.
Why you no Old Republic MMO?! I've got to admit, I played it at launch, for about 5-6 months. Bioware promised they wouldn't go freemium, and they did. Kind of a kick to the nuts, it pissed off a lot of subscribers. Obviously the aim was to bring in lots of casual players after subscribers left, but it kind of sucks when you're told one thing and paid for the content, only to have new players come in without dropping a dime. They should have just done the server merges and been done with it. The real problem with the game was lag and bugs if I recall, along with a lack of end game content. For an MMO it had decent storylines though, reminded me a lot of the KOTOR games I know and love. They had the right idea, but some things were just poorly executed. Plus, I was a little ticked they torpedoed the Star Wars Galaxies MMO, which had a decent twitch based space game, only to bring in a dumbed down arcade style "space on rails" for Old Republic. That shunned a lot of long time pilots from SWG.
I would rep you for this attribution, but I gotta spread the love first.
Also, GTAV story mode was amazing, with the exception of the "Mandatory Yoga" mission.
I played through it twice. It was good, not sure it was better than Vice City and San Andreas. It was certainly miles better than GTA IV, and although I liked GTA III it was better than that as well. Instead of 1 long story following a character, we get 3 short stories broken up between 3 guys with occasional plots that involve them all. Nice complexity, Trevor was hilarious (Would have liked to see a game that just followed him). Michael bitched a bit too much, his family and therapy issues were a bit exhausting, although there were a few nice payoffs in the end. Franklin was good, reminded me in ways of CJ from San Andreas, but not as much personality.
One annoyance was the fact that so many of the missions pay you pocket change, or less than that for completing them. 95% of the cash you will accumulate in that game, at least until you complete the story line, comes from the heists. You get a nice big chunk for the first heist, then nothing for the second heist (sub), I don't recall getting much for the third (chemical facility), and then the huge payoff at the end. If you plan on buying all the properties you have to play the stock market to help increase your funds, and the only way to make that work is to save as much cash as possible until the final heist, and then use the Creepy Uncle Lester assassination missions to play the stock market to inflate your earnings. It would have been nice if there were repeatable mini-heists that would net you small chunks of cash in the middle of the game, because there's no real way to make good money between Heist #1 and Heist #4. You can do some little stuff like races to make $5k-$8k a pop, but that's about a 5 minute investment and the best option available. Not a great return on investment. On my second play through, going for 100% completion, I had to do a LOT of races to pay for guns and cars so I didn't eat into the meager sum from the first heist.
Biggest "Who Gives a Shit?"
- Minecraft
- Skyrim HD
Skyrim was much more mainstream than the previous TES games. In fact, I suspect that a lot of casual gamers (and kids/teenagers) will be surprised when they learn that the next game in the series will be The Elder Scrolls VI and not Skyrim 2.
What's this Elder Scrolls VI crap?! Bring out Skyrim 2! Funny that you mentioned that. A lot of kiddies first played the Fallout franchise with Fallout 3. They thought the "3" meant something, didn't realize there were previous games. Kind of sad, Fallout 2 is probably still the best game in the franchise.
As far as Skyrim HD, I can see why some people are clamoring for it and why Bethesda will deliver. Is it the best Elder Scrolls game? I did enjoy Morrowind more. Oblivion wasn't necessarily better, but it did a better job in some quest lines like the Mage's Guild and Thieves Guild. A lot of kids enjoy the fantasy genre and don't go in for post-apocalyptic like Fallout. The reverse is also true. Howard probably feels they can tap into that group of players that bought Skyrim and didn't get Fallout, they're waiting for the next installment. Bethesda can touch up the graphics to Skyrim, import the mod functionality like they're doing for Fallout 4, and they can make more money off the game with minimal elbow grease. At least with adding mods for consoles they're giving the fans more than what Rockstar did when they re-released GTA V on PS4...that was kind of pointless. "Wee, 1st person view! Can't drive for shit without peripheral vision!"
Yeah, I would imagine that 90-95% of everyone that is going to buy Minecraft has bought it at this point. Hard to believe that game is 5-6 years old, I've had it since early Beta. I question what Microsoft was thinking when they purchased it from Mojang for the price they did. Sounds like they're trying to squeeze the blood from a stone. Minecraft can occasionally be fun still for adults. Feed the Beast is a great mod compilation that adds machines, electricity, nuclear power, new worlds and bosses for added challenge to the game. Overall vanilla is pretty boring at this point though, at least from a Survival standpoint. Some people enjoy the creative/design applications to the game, I'm not artsy though. I go for function. Plus there's some other Survival Crafting games out there that I enjoy more, like 7 Days to Die. That game is far more challenging.
