Notable Non-Players

RB C’Bo Flemister
TE Brock Wright
TE George Takacs
WR Kevin Austin
WR Braden Lenzy
OL Josh Lugg
LB Shayne Simon
LB Jack Lamb
DB Houston Griffith

This is from the participation chart. Let me know if some of these dudes got in. Kind of surprised Lugg wasn’t part of field goal formation or something like that. Maybe they didn’t count special teams??? Wonder what’s up with Brock Wright

We have the skill players on both sides of the ball needed to achieve the team goals, can they execute?

Tom Rees called a good game, offense didn't execute. Mostly OL and Book which is inexcusible considering they are our most experienced group on the entire team.

If our goal is 2nd in the ACC, perhaps. If it's win a NC, not even close.

The expectations on Book are way too high. Not sure how we can expect a guy without a single elite trait, to play at an elite level. Size, speed, arm strength, feel for the game are all around average. Zero chance you can win a Natty with him at QB (at least with our roster).

All in all, about what I expected from the team.

Fair or not, after that performance message boards everywhere are cranking up the old complaints from the past few years:

OL still catching blocks. Despite all five starters returning, they still struggled. Hiestand > Quinn

BK can’t develop QBs; Book back to Sept ‘19 form...happy feet...no vision...locked on to one receiver...etc.

Personally, I don’t think it’s that simple. BK admitted Duke brought defensive looks they didn’t see last year. Duke made no secret that they were going to stop the run. ND still had a decent day on the ground. Book got better as he knocked the rust off. No Claypool hurt.

What’s frustrating is that he did have an elite trait his first year as a starter. His decision making and ability to take what the defense gave him was S tier. He took a big regression on that last year and it doesn’t appear better so far this year.

It was until the last few games. Remember his late season regression (think he got hurt and sat out a game) that continued into the playoffs against Clemson? Essentially, teams got some tape on him and he's been the same guy ever since.

I think it's a mix of things for Book. He's deficient in a lot of ways, and I think 2018 played more to his strengths. He had both Boykin and Claypool which was a terrific #1 and #2 WR option. Finke was a suitable #3 in 2018, but he wasn't legit #2 last year. It's early, but I don't see Tremble as impressive either.

IDK, Book is never going to be a deep ball slinger, but I think if they use the right mix of WRs he'll look better. Sorry, but Skowronek and McKinley are going to cut it. Not dynamic guys and very little separation. AD made a good catch in the end zone, but I'm unsure of him given all his bouncing around over the years. I have to believe that Lenzy, Wilkins, Austin, Keys, and Johnson get better separation, and gives Book better targets to overcome his deficiencies. And add Mayer getting more reps than Tremble at TE, and Jafar getting more targets as a satellite guy. And the OL simply needs to play better in both phases. If we can't run between the tackles, that's not good for Book passing either.

Thought the team settled in at the end of the 2nd and the full 2nd half. Book needs to play better, we need him at least at the level he played at last season. Was impressed with the new faces we had on O and D

PROS:
- Dungey is an astronomical upgrade over Flutie.

He is in terms of not being an anti-ND troll. That said, I thought the broadcast was pretty low energy and boring.

I don’t think Flutie would have made it any more exciting. I think the reason it was low energy was

1. We played poorly
2. Lack of fans

But Dungey is definitely more monotone, but I don’t care. I just imagine Flutie in that game and it’s a nightmare. Dungey makes it much more enjoyable, for me.

This team isn’t beating Clemson.

Book isn’t a playoff caliber QB. He missed dudes that were wide open down field and chose the underneath route instead.

Also wanted to shoutout Hinish. I was a little surprised that he wasn't named a captain, as he has been a vocal leader for most of his time at ND. I must admit, I thought that coming into this season, he was going to be the less talented 'leader' who got far too many snaps than his production warranted. He flashed today.

Everyone touched on everything, but I’ll throw my hat into the “Tommy called a good game” corner.

The lack of execution on the scripted drives to start the game was maddening, but he started to get a good feel for things with almost every drive after that. He really got into a good playcalling rhythm after halftime.

The biggest issue that he’s gonna need to make up for is the lack of an alpha on the outside. McKinley can’t be Boykin or Claypool, and Austin isn’t available until maybe Clemson... he’s gonna have to get creative to bail the offense out of situations where Book would usually lean on his outside receiver.

I think a good start would be scheming some creative stuff for Tremble and Mayer to stress the same side of the field. Either they win a one-on-one matchup for the play you need (like Tremble on an early third down, or Mayer on that super-clutch third down late), or it frees up one of the WR’s on the opposite side.

Curious to see how things unfold.

He also missed dudes that were 5 yards away from him because he was either firing it 100 MPH at them from point blank or firing it well over their heads.

There was a missed throw to Kyren on a beautifully executed screen that made me wanna pull my hair out. Had an absolute convoy in front for a huge play.

SIAP, but I won’t dump too much on Book or the O line. A lot of what you saw was the receivers not getting open. O line was battling a stacked box all day. Cutliffe knew the receivers were pretty much untested so he stacked the box making it tough to run.

Play improved in the second half. If it hadn’t, then I’d be worried.

Yup, that was ugly. He came back on another screen like pass and did better though. I was cussing about the one you're talking about. Zero touch.

Neither is Skowronek. Wilkins at an inch shorter looked to have more alpha than either. Hope we see some guys emerge.

That play was tough to watch. It’s a designed play yet somehow the pressure seemed to surprise him to the point he couldn’t throw an accurate pass as the play unfolded. So bizarre.

Listened to the Kelly post game Interview. Gheesh talk about excuses for Book. Okay Kelly if you could have the same QB for 10 years you might be able to develop them.

He said what he’s gotta say. Hopefully the conversations internally are more direct but we shouldn’t expect BK to say many specifics to the media.

I'm certainly not worried. I agree with a lot of points others have made. They have had an abbreviated off season with less practice and a lot of more distractions than normal. Yes, a lot of things seemed troubling, but I think we can still win 10 games this year.

Having now watched the game I don't think the o-line was bad. The WRs aren't good and Book struggled.
