Draft Day Disasters

With the draft just a few days away, I thought I'd start a thread where we could share our teams draft day horror stories.(If a thread like this already exists, someone please merge)

The year was 2007, and the Miami Dolphins were closing in on the better part of a decade since Marino retired, and since then Miami hadn't been able to field even a marginal QB. The Dolphins had the 9th pick in the draft and ALL signs were pointing to a QB, particularly Brady Quinn, if he was even available at #9. The phins had been flirting with BQ for some time and even the experts were basically calling it a done deal if BQ somehow fell to #9.
In hindsight, I still don't care that BQ didn't pan out in the NFL. We wanted a QB. We needed a QB.

Then this happened:

I would cover the Browns draft disasters since coming back into the league...

but it's basically every pick they've made outside of the O Line and would take more time than I care to give...

If we could expand this thread to other sports I could go on and on about the Knicks draft day disasters...

The Giants haven't whiffed too much on first round picks. Definitely missed on a few 2nd rounders recently though.

When the Bengals turned down a trade offer of NINE total draft picks from the Saints and drafted Akili Smith instead.... oh boy.

Browns - Couch and Brown back to back #1 pciks in 1999 & 2000, both flamed out.

Passing on Ngata for Wimbley, who was a one year wonder.

Gerrard Warren in 2001 at #3 overall....ugh

William Green in 2003, not sure who got stabbed in the back harder, Green or Browns fans.

Good to see that after two seasons, the two first round picks from 2012 are no longer with the team. Bright side is that we pawned off Richardson before anyone else was the wiser.

Finally, passing on Julio Jones in 2011 was just unforgivable.

Not a draft day disaster but one that has a direct impact on draft day...the Colts trading a first round pick for Trent Richardson. He sucks. A lot. He isn't worth a third round pick.

That draft was the freakin worst... a RB in the passing league and then a QB who was basically as old as I am that they were going to 'build around'??

That was the only time when I was upset on draft day, all the others were upsetting in retospect...

I still don't have a good explanation for what's happened with Trent. He's a beast with a great work ethic. Something just isn't working for him at this level, though.

Some players just don't translate for one reason or another... Brady Q.'s accuracy completely vanished at the next level... never saw that coming.

Still great college players... which says alot.

I lost faith in 2011 when Jones was there for the taking....I am not over that and I am not sure if I will every be.

Bucs:

Kenyatta Walker
Cadillac Williams over Aaron Rogers
Had plans in place to trade up and get Megatron. Drafted Gaines Adams. Three years later traded him to Bears for a 2nd round bust. Then he died in 2010.

Oh and then there was a Bo Jackson

Geez, that late huh??? I lost faith when Earnest fumbled... where have you been???? :)

Lost the lil bit I had found when the Ravens beat the Giants and won a Super Bowl...

The back was broken forever when the Browns were hosed out of the playoffs on back to back horrid calls in two striaght games and the bottles started flying...

the draft?? The draft stuff is just more good times at this point...

I couldn't believe what happened in 2012 though...

The Bengals taking Jerome Simpson over Desean Jackson in the 2008 draft.

And the jury's still out on Dalton, but taking Dalton before Kaepernick is starting to annoy me.

Jets:

Took Kyle Brady (TE who wasn't on the team 3 years later) over Warren Sapp, despite fans literally cheering "we want Sapp" during the selection.

Taking Al Toon (admittedly a 3x pro bowler but still) over Jerry Rice in 1985.

Taking Ken Obrien (a solid QB but still) over Dan Marino in 1983.

Just to name a few.

They got the Falcon's 1st round pick (27th overall), plus a second, fourth, and following year's 1st and 4th round picks. On a team with so many holes that's hard to pass up on, even for someone like Jones. Just look how nicely the RG3 trade has worked for St Louis. Then again I've always been a fan of stockpiling draft picks.

Obviously not a Jets fan, but this is my favorite.

The Bears busted on about 20 RBs between Neal Anderson and Matt Forte. Rashaan Salaam and Curtis Enis leap to mind.

That's awesome. Didn't those same idiots cheer when they drafted Mark Sanchez?

Taking Tony Mandarich #2 overall. A top 5 of Hall of Famers outside of Tony, who did nothing for the Pack.

Everyone thought Mandarich was going to be a studd though. It is hard to fault this pick in real time, even though it turned out very poorly.

Not a RB, but Cade McNown was a horrible pick as well.

So were Akili Smith (#3), Tim Couch (#1), and, to a certain extent, Daunte Culpepper (#11) in that "Quarterback Draft." Everyone was wrong on those guys.

McNabb (#2) had a nice career, but never won a super bowl.

The 49ers trading up to get JJ Stokes. Also, them taking Giovanni Carmazi before Bay Area native and lifelong 49ers fan Tom Brady.

The same could be said for so many players. It still doesn't make it any less of a bust.

You can say that about a lot of these picks though. Everyone was high on Couch...Curtis Enis...Cedric Benson...Mandarich...Ryan Leaf...

Heck, there were a few (not many, but some) that thought Leaf was the better pick because of his upside.

Hindsight, and such...

Add Rex Grossman and Cedric Benson to the list. We're not limited to QB and RB busts either - David Terrell, Chris Williams, Gabe Carimi and Michael Haynes all stunk.

It was fun when peps started playing on the name though...

"The Bears QB play is gross... man."

Still think Shea McClellin was a terrible pick but I'll give him a season at LB before I call him a bust.
