Dogs are awesome

Service dog jumps between blind owner, bus

When Figo the service dog saw an oncoming mini school bus heading for Audrey Stone, the blind woman he was trained to guide, the golden retriever's protective instincts kicked in: He threw himself at the closest part of the vehicle he could.

haha, I get it though, thing you have to realize with me is I was nearly killed by a dog as a child... never have been a dog person as an adult due to that experience... I am never comfortable around the "my dog would never hurt a fly" person...

That explains not liking dogs, but what about your love for cats?

If dogs rule...

If dogs rule...

... does that mean that cats drool? I'm a little rusty on schoolyard logic proofs.

I guess I've just had great luck with them... loving, chill, self reliant, behaved and I've even had a number of cats through the years that play fetch and other games normally associated with dogs.

Yes, dogs are awesome.

My boy Walter Sweetness, aka Wally, passed on Saturday. He was one bad ass little Jackhuahua... I mean a total Boss. I got him on Nov. 1st 1999, the day Walter Payton died. I Haven't experienced this much grief since my parents passed in the 80's.

The wife and I are looking seriously into getting some kind of bulldog at some point in the coming years... maybe some English variation/ cross breed that isn't a health mess, small is a key... I don't think I could ever own a large dog.

I find I'm very comfortable around these breeds and they seem to be very cat like, meaning super chill and lazy... :)

Get a French Bulldog. Basically half Bulldog, half cat. Perfect!

Bulldogs do seem to be lazy dogs, from what my friend has said. It would probably be an appropriate "cat-like" dog in that respect.

Couple things to keep in mind: Bulldogs tend to chew on things quite a bit, but mostly in the puppy phase. Lots of puppies chew on things of course, but some breeds are worse than others (Typically "hunting" breeds). If you teach them young what's acceptable to chew on, like toys and bones, you can avoid this.

Something else to mention: Bulldogs sink in water, which I did not know. They're not like other dogs that can swim the moment they touch the water. Some bulldogs can swim, but typically not very well or they can easily get overwhelmed and can drown. They usually need something like an assisted flotation device to allow them to swim.

Interesting, the last paragraph is great to know as we have a very large pool, with quite a deep, deep end...

Unavoidable with English bulldogs. Skin and breathing problems are guaranteed, and their heads are so large that veterinary intervention is basically required for a bitch to whelp without dying in the process (which drives the price of puppies up dramatically).

But if you're looking for an alternatingly silly, stupid and lazy family mascot, you could do a lot worse. Just be prepared for the expense.

It's my understanding that the more pure the breed the more health issue arise with EB's...

Bummer. I feel for ya. When the yellow lab that I grew up with passed, it was really hard. Can never have a yellow lab again. Once he passed, my parents got one of these:

There's stuff out there that says bulldogs can be taught how to swim, but it's not for every individual dog. They suggest starting in shallow water and gradually enticing them out as they get comfortable with it. Definitely don't just throw them in like some people will do with a Retriever. Most of the videos showing people teaching Bulldogs to swim involves assisted flotation devices.

Our shallow end is ~3.5 feet (I'm not sure of the exact measures of our pool, it was built in the early 70s) so it's still far too deep for a bulldog that can't swim...

As a former breeder of dogs, let me clarify a few misconceptions.
1. Purebred dogs are not more prone top health issues than the Heinz 57 variety. People don't breed mutts and create a lineage so mutts get the false reputation of being immune to health issues.
2. Particular breeds (like hunting dogs) are not more prone to chewing than any other breeds. Most puppies of all breeds are chewers. some grow out of it and some don't. Those that don't usually didn't get the necessary correction at an early age.
3. Ailments like hip dysplasia are not necessarily a breed problem, but more of a lineage problem. For instance Golden's have a reputation for being prone to hip dysplasia, but you can find plenty of Goldens that don't experience it. The breeder who is breeding the dog(s) who pass this along needs to stop breeding the pair.
4. Dogs have their own unique personalities even within the same breed.
5. Buy what you like, just do your homework first. Buy from someone who has been breeding for at least 10 years. They will know the traits of their lines better than the casual breeder who breeds dogs just to make a buck. Check references.

I have a dog, and I would consider myself a dog person (I'm not a cat hater, I think they're hilariously awesome, just never had one), but this video is pretty badass:

Saw that before. It's pretty good. I believe that's at a gator farm where they get fed regularly. I'll bet Mr. Fluffy would be lunch in a matter of seconds if that gator was hungry. lol

I have seen that before, I always wonder what the adults are doing here... he's standing right next to it and allowing the cats and kids to be less than ten feet from it... wtf??
