Good luck to him. I really wish ND would have built off the momentum we had this summer.

I wish him nothing but the best and he should go where his heart leads him. I'd be remiss, however, if I didn't take this opportunity to say again that I don't get why anyone (other than maybe a kid that grew up in central PA) would want to go to Penn State. The allure remains a mystery to me.

Totally agree. It's a head-scratcher.

OK, well I'm sure you have heard the saying that PA is Philly, Pittsburgh, and Alabama in the middle. For me, at least, that it is in central PA is a major demerit (my apologies to you, as I presume you are from PA). It is just a cold version of the south, in terms of culture, affluence, lifestyle, etc. You can get pretty much all of the things you mentioned at many, many other schools; plus warmth, better looking girls, and in many cases easier access. That is from the perspective of any regular student.

From the perspective of a football recruit, the same basic argument as above applies, except tailgating doesn't matter. Plus, I am firmly of the belief that Penn State (like many other B1G/rust belt/cold weather) football programs are finished as serious national programs. Maybe OSU can remain somewhat competitive until Urbie blows town, but they aren't going to win a national championship. But otherwise, these programs are all done. That is why I'm pumped about ND aligning itself with the ACC (plus ND is an elite institution and recruits nationally, so it can overcome some of that, even if it has to work harder than the schools in the south).

Just scrolled back a couple of pages...didn't see anything un-classy to my untrained eye. Wish him well but darn it...I wanted him Irish.

Someone posted a pic of a bar of soap on the shower floor.

Yeah, I can appreciate that. My wife is from a town/area like that in upstate NY (in the Catskills, kind of near the PA border), and I like visiting there. Much easier pace of life. At the same time, I wouldn't want to live there. I mean no offense by that - to each his own and all of that. It just wouldn't be a place I'd want to go to school.

I'm right in the middle between State College and Williamsport.
It is like Alabama.
Burn it to the ground.
I hate it here.

I've got a few buddys that go to state college, always have a blast up there personally, atmosphere is pretty urban, always enjoy the drive through the "alabama" hills, halloween and pOSU fell in the same weekend last year, damn good time.

not a fan of the football program by any means mind you.

O'Brian will be at Houston or Minnesota next year

I think this may be a possibility as well. Would this make a difference in Holley's decision? I know John Clayton brought up Kelly as an NFL name again. I certainly don't want that to cross the remaining recruits minds anymore then it has to!

I don't buy this at all. There was legitimate NFL interest in him last year. He could have jumped ship then but chose to stay. His comments about being at Penn St for the long haul seemed pretty sincere to me. I'm betting he sticks around for a while until the school is back on its feet. Plus, he's only 44. Plenty of time to get back to the NFL when he's 51 or 52 years old.

This video is why PSU will always matter. IMO nothing can touch PSU for a big game atmosphere.

I'll also point out that PSU is a better school than most big time football factories and has the same football crazy culture as any SEC school. All in all, it's a super appealing package to a recruit.

No offense, but you are so wrong.

They can have as great a game atmosphere as they want, they still don't matter. Those days are already over.

Lol this is a pretty silly opinion.

PSU was a very strong program until the sanctions hit and they basically got screwed out of an undefeated season in 2005. If O'Brien sticks around, I fully expect them to return to the top of the B1G and compete for spots in the CFB playoff.

I don't. Northern football is dead. Northeast teams like Penn State, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, etc., especially, have all played their last truly meaningful college football games. They should just concentrate on hoops (does PSU even play basketball?). Even Ohio State is a joke this year and is going to get corn holed by a Clemson team that is only halfway decent, and the B1G's days of being relevant on a national scale are over.

They have a very good volleyball program I think.....
