In a desperate attempt to make something sensible out of this thread:
1). Brian Kelly is one damm good head coach and we need to keep him for as long as he can tolerate being around this often impossible-to-please atmosphere;
2). Bob Diaco is a terrifically talented young defensive coordinator and we need to keep him for as long as he thinks that he is properly appreciated and compensated;
3). Solution? There might not be any, but there might. This depends entirely on Bob Diaco. The potential pragmatic element of a solution is to facilitate a Frank Beamer/ Bud Foster situation. This involves both near-head coach compensation, independent trust in operating his side of the field, independent [i.e. go out of your way] cooperation in recruiting and personnel swapping [ex I'll give you Jackson and Farley and Russell; will you please give me Niklas?], and true friendship. I believe that Kelly and Notre Dame are ahead of the curve on this [particularly WAY ahead of us] and are trying to cultivate all of this;
4). nevertheless, it all rests with Bobby-the-D's personal career outlook. How much total control does he want? Is he even good at offensive thinking/coordination? Is he ambitious for fame or some vision of personal fulfillment? The one thing that we're almost 100% sure of is that there will never be a choice of Kelly vs Diaco.

I'm hoping obviously for a Beamer/Foster type lifelong team.

If you could only keep one, as of today, who would it be?

I'll take the proven head coach who showed the managerial insight to hire the untested other guy.

You can have the OJT guy.

Brennan, Faust, Davie, and Weis clearly demonstrate that ND is no place for a OJT head coach. It's been a century since an assistant ND coach took over the job successfully. Any college football fan should be able to grasp that fundamental, even at Nova.

We have all seen what ND does to first time Head Coaches. I love Diaco with a passion as a coach and person, but I do not want him to be our head coach at any time in the foreseeable future without more experience. ND is just too tough of a job for that. He is great where he is, and I think he knows that right now.

...everyone thinking any assistant w/o HC experience, and alot of it, could do this ND HC job....please make this post your signature, and read it every day.

He has stated that he wants to continue to move forward professionally. I believe it was in an interview with jack Nolan before the season maybe?

Either way, we have no idea what his plans are and when something he might want will be available to him. We can only hope he is here a long, long time.

I will say this. Without Diaco we would probably be 2-2 at best.

For me, this sums it up. Apologize for the bluntness, but the thread's premise is ridiculously implausible. There is no way that Jack Swarbrick would spend more than 1 second on this question IF Coach Diaco had something else pop-up as a HC. He might try to sweeten Diaco's ND deal, but he wouldn't for a moment consider Diaco over Kelly.

If Kelly was deemed not to be the right guy, Swarbrick is looking outside.

Stop saying it's our fanbase. It's ONE guy (in this case) making a ridiculous question in which almost everyone here recognizes its ridiculousness.

So....everyone > the OP, and that means the fanbase actually has it right.

Actually, THIS fanbase has it right. NDNation.com is another story, and an epic fail LOL...

My only input into this thread is that I hope we can sign Diaco to a nice long extension. We can't afford to let him go, and he's going to be a hot name on the head coaching market if the defense keeps playing like this

This is pretty dumb. Diaco is great. That is why Kelly hired him. Assistants get too much publicity around here. See Jon Tenuta.

Great hire BK. for all the criticism bk gets he deserves more credit than this.

Uh, how about a little history? When Bob Davie was defensive coordinator under Lou Holtz, we heard the same silly arguments. We saw how that turned out.
