Bernie has one shot -- the next debate -- to take down Biden. If he misses that shot, it's over. Especially if Warren stays in or doesn't endorse Bernie.

You have to think Warren bows out in a normal primary... I'm sure the establishment is begging her to stay. Bern lost Min and Mas because of it. Even Donna Brazile has changed her tune and says Warren ought to stay lol.

Right now they are doing everything in their power not to get Corbyn'd. A major issue with American politics is the two party system and the fact that you can't have closed parties. If you want to call yourself a Democrat, you can. Doesn't matter if you weren't a Democrat for your whole political career, or if the Democratic party doesn't want you. David Duke, etc. can run as Democrats if they want.

It also doesn't matter that most of who are actually Democrats bemoan the existence of the new DSA wing of their party that screams louder than everyone else and pulls progressives into their commie vortex. The issue isn't the policy positions, the issue is the conduct of Marxists who pretend they want to make things like Scandinavia but when you see what they actually say online and in their meetings they want to turn the United States into Animal Farm.

Elizabeth Warren is/was the preferred candidate of most of my friends. But the 20%ish Bernie-or-bust group makes it so that you have to vote for Bernie if you really care about Medicare for All and you want to vote for a viable candidate. Or a handful of other progressive issues. The current primary system is extremely flawed. Ranked choice voting (or some form of multiple iteration plurality runoff) would fix so many problems... as would eliminating all "early states" before Super Tuesday.

Warren is going to endorse Biden. I'm sure of it. It's politically irresponsible for her to endorse Sanders.

Warren did to Bloomberg in Nevada what Christie did to Rubio. Bloomberg was taking some thunder from Biden. That ended on the stage in the Nevada debate.

The lane is clearing for Biden. He's going to get the nomination. His VP pick is going to be paramount.

I think four hour lines to vote in Houston precincts that are predominantly black is a sign of things to come for November. Along with the jackwagon nonsense in Iowa and California too. Greatest country in the world and we make voting a "send in the clowns" process.

What's crazy is that I live in a city and had a line a total of 6 people long to vote in my primary. Dunno how these other states are fucking stuff up so badly. If I had a four hour line, I would've had to skip voting and go to work.

I think there are several ways they could do this, that would be better than the current primary system. The powers that be want to keep it as messy as possible though because messy can be manipulated.

I hate our party system. Not that I think coalition party systems are better, they're a mess too. Put me in the category of hoping technology and common sense allows us to at some point vote directly on issues, not people.

As far as the current situation, it's going to end up like 3016. If I were a dem I'd hope that Warren and Bloomberg would get out as soon as possible so we have as fair of race as possible. It's kind of sad though as it boils down to socialism vs senility. Either way, the general debates are going to be lit.

Damn, can you see the future? If I had to guess in 3016 the two candidates are the progressive Hillary-Bot 3000 vs. the newly conservative Hillary Rodham Clinton XXIII (cloned). Nothing stands in her way this time!

Yeah, I don't get it either. I live in a big blue city and just right walked up and voted at 8:00 yesterday morning. In and out in five minutes. Why is this so hard?

I could be wrong but I think the majority of would-be Warren voters will actually break for Biden (I think that happened here in Massachusetts yesterday, enough to hand Biden the state).

Her base is liberal, yes, but also white, well-educated and relatively affluent. That's not really a burn-it-all-down Bernie crowd. They want to win in November and if they think Biden's viable many of them will vote for him rather than take a chance on the "Revolution." The tantrums that Bernie people have been throwing in their direction aren't helping him win their votes either.

IDK. Most Warren fans I know are just a shade away from Bernie Bros. Older fems to an extent, but they also can't stand Biden. But you may be right.

Must have been a racist poll worker who tried to help someone vote curbside. All part of the evil plan.

https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/election-2020/2020/03/03/362534/super-tuesday-plagued-by-hours-long-wait-times-in-parts-of-harris-county/

There were also problems at Texas Southern University (TSU), where five of 10 voting machines were out for part of the night and hundreds waited in line until around midnight to cast their vote.

Some of the problems arose when a poll worker removed a unit to take outside for someone to vote curbside, disconnecting a row of the machines, according to Rosio Torres from the Harris County Clerks Office.

After spending vast sums on ads, Bloomberg pulls plug on presidential run

Reuter’s

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ended his presidential campaign on Wednesday, after the billionaire’s lavish spending on campaign ads across the United States failed to deliver convincing wins in electorial debut in Democratic contest.

He said in a campaign statement he was endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden for the nomination.

What if Biden picked someone like Mitt Romney? I know they are ideologically different on some issues but Romney is relatively liberal on social issues and Biden is relatively conservative on fiscal issues so it could actually work? Romney hates Trump so I could see him doing it.

I think that combo would definitely beat Trump.

Do you know Democrats?
Whoever Biden, at his age, picks as his VP is a presumptive future leader of the Democratic Party and likely major candidate in 2024 even - especially? - if they win the White House. There is no appetite, among actual Democratic voters, for an old, rich, white, moderate Republican in that role.
Just ask Mike Bloomberg.

Those are the last 4 losing Democrat VP nominees...All rich, white, moderate, and old (except Edwards was relatively young). Add Joe Biden and Al Gore as the other two VP nominees who are also white, old, and rich.

Not saying it will happen but if they want to beat Trump it would be smart. Democrats aren't going to vote for Trump because Mitt Romney is the VP.

Agreed, but the progressive wing keeps arguing the only way to beat Trump is a groundswell of excitement and turnout.

You seem to be on the anti-Trump train, so same question I posed to IrishLax in the Trump thread.

Why?

What Biden policies do you favor over Trump's? And why would you trust Biden to execute them efficiently and effectively?

But as long as Bernie doesn't run as a Third Party candidate what is the issue? If progressives are so bitter about Bernie that they will stay home and not vote then they don't deserve anything.

This isn't really the right thread for this but I'll answer anyway. I wasn't so anti-Trump in 2016 because I thought he would tone down his rhetoric and nonsense when he got to office but that didn't really happen. I think the President of our country needs to be a role model for our children.

It's not really so much about the policies. I actually agree with Trump on policy more than Biden but ultimately there are only a handful of things that a President can help get done during his term. My life is good right now so I just don't want a progressive in office that is going to threaten that.

I think the progressives would argue that having a candidate (and running mate) that they aren't enthused about, will hurt turnout. Certainly progressives would prefer Biden and whoever he chooses over Trump. But will it mean that less progressives turn up at the poll because of bitterness or lack of enthusiasm? I'm guessing Bernie would argue yes.

Save that for the parents, pastors, teachers, and neighbors. I cannot believe people want the President to be a role model as their first and foremost priority.

Barack was. He increased healthcare costs, exposed us in foreign policy, failed ObamaCare by any reasonable measure. But he was nice, intelligent and cuddly.

Did you watch the SOTU this year? Serious question. I generally agree with you but what Trump has done in 3 years is incredible, and it's helping minorities, small businesses, and those who depended on government programs the most. It's freaking incredible and I want to see what 8 years looks like.

I just think it's incredibly misguided for people of any country to elect a person based on "role model". There is so much more at stake than that, and the role models should be local, not a million miles away. Not to mention, everyone who wants to be President has some degree of nut job to them, none of these men or women are the second coming.

Key word being “losing.”

Also, none of those people were actual Republicans. Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee for President against the most popular Democrat of his generation (and Joe Biden!). And while he was a typically-moderate Republican Governor of Massachusetts and is admirably disgusted with Trump, he is still and has always been a Republican, with the voting record to match. Presumably he’d nominate anti-abortion Supreme Court justices, among many other disqualifying positions for someone asking Democratic voters to put him in the White House.

There are already going to be a lot of butthurt Bernie Bros if Biden wins the nomination. Making Romney VP would play right into their “both parties are the same” hands. He’s also not very popular in the industrial Midwest - or wasn’t in 2012 - where this race likely gets decided. Like Biden, Mitt’s a decent guy, but I’m not sure what he brings to the table to beat Trump aside from maybe a small group of business-class Never Trump Republicans who feel politically homeless right now. What states do they swing? Virginia? Utah? IDK.

Biden’s VP pick will be really important. It needs to be someone relatively young, broadly popular and not-divisive among Dems, probably helps to be a woman and/or nonwhite. And someone you could see carrying the torch in 2024. I’d bet Kamala Harris, maybe Klobuchar, perhaps Mayor Pete or Beto or Stacey Abrams (since they need jobs anyway). Maybe Deval Patrick, if you want a former Massachusetts Governor who worked for Bain Capital. At least he’s a Dem.

Obama slapped Romney around in the three states Trump won by a slimmest margins in 2016 - Michigan Obama 54% to Romney 44%, Wisconsin Obama 52% to Romney 45%, and Pennsylvania 52% to 46%. Romney lost both Ohio and Florida to Obama as well.

Hilary had more than a few issues in these states but the key issues were lack of voter turnout, especially black voter turnout, and working class voters who crossed party lines from Obama to Trump. Trump couldn't dream up a better scenario - Romney is absolutely repugnant to most blacks and working class voters. Trump could just play Romney's 47% comment over and over and sleepwalk his way to a win in every midwestern state.

There are already going to be a lot of butthurt Bernie Bros if Biden wins the nomination. Making Romney VP would play right into their “both parties are the same” hands.

Absolutely agree. Not only will this dramatically decrease progressive turnout for dems, it opens the door for Trump to babble on and on about the swamp which will probably work to increase his own voter turnout. You can call the Bernie Bros losers or crazy or whatever. The reality is these bros are are highly engaged. The dems will need their votes and energy to win the general. Disregarding them or alienating them is a mistake.

Romney may help Biden win the six electoral votes in Utah and a few country club republicans. That's about it.

-Biden has the best chance to beat Trump.
-Biden needs a guy like Romney as his vp to beat Trump.

Pick one.

Being a role model is not the only priority or even the biggest priority. But as I felt about Clinton and his adultery I would prefer a president in office with some moral backbone. You are presuming this isn't a binary choice. It's either Trump or the Democratic nominee. If the Republican nominee wasn't a jackass I would vote for him or her 9 times out of 10 based on policy. But some things are more important.

And yes I did watch the SOTU and thought he did a great job. Not sure how that is related to the other 364 days of his presidency? Anyway this is the last thing I am going to post about Trump in here because it's off-topic. We can debate further when the election gets closer.
