I think he means playing normally vs going into an offensive shell.

BK made the right call to give those guys the ball for a once in a lifetime experience up 24 on their last drive of the game on senior night.

Well, that’s pretty damn cool. 9-0 regular season.

10-0?

I'm not saying not to do that. But let Pyne throw a fucking pass.

Weird, I didnt mention the word championship. Everyone on this board wanted to see the ND backup QB (whether it was Pyne or Clark) throw a single pass. I'm not the only one bummed it didnt happen.

Weird to think their development was going to be so greatly improved because they got to throw one or two passes.

Even when the backups do get more than one drive, they’re rarely given passing plays. It’s extremely frustrating. If Book comes out for any reason we will likely be in trouble. And yes, next year? I guess we’ll just have to accept BS Brian Kelly excuses because well we have a new starting QB. Guess what, Mac Jones wasn’t ever expected to start, and here he is running one of the best teams in the country, without a hiccup.

Weird, again your putting words in my mouth. When did I talk about player development? Literally everybody on this board wanted to see our backup QB throw a pass, just to see what we may have going into next year.

I'm gonna double down and be a d*** and you can down vote me all you want. The "Lets get the hardworking, practice guy player a snap" is a great, feel good moment. But go look at LSU last year, perhaps the greatest team in recent history, winning games by an average of 49-21. Go find me their Ekanayake. Or Clemson the year before that. Modern College football is a machine, and the best coaches remove all personal emotions and do whatever it takes on every single drive. The fact that we gave up the pass for the last 10 minutes, if it wasn't for a prayer broken off by Tyree we wouldnt have scored at all in the fourth.

I'm the biggest Kelly supporter there can be, and we shouldn't be focusing on the negatives of this game. Congrats to another undefeated regular season under him. Ian Book, regardless of what happens in the post season, you have cemented yourself in Notre Dame lore.

Look I'm with you about getting the backups some run well before the last drive. Your original quote appeared to go after the fact a couple of walk ons got to take a couple of meaningless handoffs. Pyne not throwing the ball those two or three plays on that drive isn't going to make or break his development. But yes, they should have slung it before that drive.

I mostly want to know the status of Daelin and Bauer

That’s what’s frustrating about not putting away a bad opponent early....the earlier you can pull your starters, the earlier they can avoid senseless injury.

Well, that’s pretty damn cool. 9-0 regular season. 3rd perfect regular season of Kelly’s tenure. Hopefully everybody is healthy and can rest up for the rematch. Seniors are 25-1 at home. They allow me and my family to watch a lot of winning football. And we’ve had a lot of enjoyable Saturdays because of it. Great stuff fellas!

Wait...I thought they were 10-0 regular season?

If I was Cbo I would transfer as he should be a starter somewhere and he is going to be a number 3 next year.

If he graduates next semester, then I would agree. Hope not though.

Since this year is a free year for everyone, he might have 3 more years of eligibility, so no rush. He's got two at minimum as I believe he RS'd in 2018.

Yeah I agree. 3 years does seem to be right.

So was it Lugg playing at centre?
Any thoughts on how the o-line looked?

The OLine started erratically. Two new guys make it tough to perfectly cohere. Still even early in the game they were OK but not solid by OUR standards. Quinn got frustrated enough that he decided to put Tommy Kraemer in for Gibbons to try to shore things up. Kraemer warriored it out, but it was clear that his normal powerhouse physicality (upon which his game depends) was not yet fully restored from the surgery. As the game went on, the line got more solid (in my opinion.) Kraemer was in for the first half of that and I think Gibbons for the second part. They probably were wearing them down.

Our troubles in the game (again in my opinion) were not on the OLine but on the receiving corps. The lack of us "putting away the weaker opponent" was largely the stoppage of our early drives by nearly consistent drops (on great passes) by the corps. Even Dungey felt he had to mention the drops (though gentlemanly as he is, he fit the remark in between two other "problems" in his halftime remarks.) If you re-look the game, just imagine if those early drops (or lack of "snatching" the ball cleanly in tight quarters but where the ball cleanly arrived) had been catches --- I don't think that more than one of our earlier drives would have been stopped. Had the receivers been sharp we'd probably have scored 60+ points.

Lots else could be said but those for me are the two most significant.

Thanks. I consider you the forum expert on o-line play.
So Lugg was at centre and Gibbons RG and then Gibbons got benched for Big Tommy?

I take it they don't call chop blocks on the running back. KW got away with a good one at the knees from memory.

I watched part of the Clemson VT game. They are banged up. Their OL especially so. It will be a war, but they are far from solid.

I feel like Cuse will be an 8+ win team again in 3 years or so.

When Syracuse reaches "8" wins will be determined by their development of a QB. That fellow we played is not it. Very good game plan by the OC when he stuck to the short passing game punctuated by runs. Even then, the QB showed no touch and a lot of pass wobble. The rest of the Syracuse team has a bunch of defensive speed and we saw something similar as to the difficulty that causes, when we played Louisville.

Most teams that we play try to go normal mano-a-mano with us, and this year that's not the best idea. Louisville and Syracuse didn't bother and ran like crazy people all over the D-Side of the field. That caused enough poor plays that we had to be better on the other ones, not, for instance, dropping catchable passes or not getting open in the first place. There are good reasons why it often comes down to Ian himself winning the game.

On a previous comment about Kraemer and Gibbons: I don't like to use the word "benched" as I am not on the sidelines listening to Quinn. Ex. Gibbons could have gotten a ding. Quinn could have planned all along to see where Tommy was physically. Quinn could have noticed something and got Gibbons off the field for a while for some in-game coaching up. All I'm willing to say is that we were a little "soft" to my eyes in the C/RG gap, and Tommy (ordinarily the ultimate power gap filler) was sent onto the field. He did well, but looked a little limited in his twists to catch up to angled blitzers. He also smashed some guys. He played a lot, but then he came out and Gibbons went back in (I assume that it was Gibbons; my attention was waning in the 4th quarter.)

One last little "connection" note: when the game was over and the guys went to sing the Alma Mater, a bunch of seniors (I think) stood in front of the rest. Ian was the last guy over. He pushed into the line (literally) to sing shoulder to shoulder with his mates. Who did he pick to stand between? Hainsey and Kraemer. .... maybe says nothing. Maybe says a lot.
