Are Women Second-Class Citizens in Traditional Judaism?

By Chana Weisberg
fOId587234.jpg
Question:

How can you seriously, honestly claim that Orthodox Judaism has any respect for women, and that they have the right view of them and seek true justice on their behalf?

Why can women not love G‑d but have self-respect, and free participation in our religion at the same time? Why can’t we be what He intended, and not what man wants to reduce us to? Why can religious women not see that it is simply religious manipulation on the part of men that keeps them content as second-class citizens within a third-world mentality?
Answer:

You sound upset and angry. You feel strongly that you want a connection to G‑d, but don’t see it in “religion” due to the supposed mistreatment of women.

I have much to say on the subject, and I really wish you could access a copy of my latest book, Tending the Garden, which addresses the role of women in Judaism and might just surprise you with some stereotype-breaking descriptions.

But I digress.

Let me tell you what I see when I look at free, Western society. I see women prancing in front of men as if they are pieces of flesh to grab on to. I see women leading unhappy lives in a career climb that doesn’t satisfy their natural instincts of being a woman. I see women stuck in miserable marriages with men who take them for granted, and who often leave them for a younger “chick,” or cheat on them. I see one out of two marriages ending in divorce, if not more, and who knows how many other unhappy ones. I see women who seem to have attained “freedom” and “emancipation,” but come home from a long day at the office to still do 90 percent of the housework. I see women in this free society who hit the glass ceiling far too often because they are women, and I see that those who succeed often have to drop every iota of their femininity in their climb up. I see women who are free to wear whatever clothes that they choose, yet parade around wearing as little as they can to get whatever recognition from the opposite gender. I see pregnant teens. I see teens who’ve lost their innocence before they could even understand what having any kind of relationship is all about.

And all this, I see in our “free” society. A society that supposedly recognizes women and treats them with some degree of respect.

My point is—what appears as freedom, isn’t always so. What appears as “women’s rights” can also lead women to the most degrading, self-humiliating behavior lacking any self-respect.

Unlike the Torah that you describe, the Torah that I know takes a balanced approach, bringing out the true essence of every individual, while respecting the uniqueness of both genders and setting parameters so that this boundary is not violated.

I wish that just for a short while you would be a part of a chassidic, Lubavitch community. I think you would be surprised with, for the most part, the degree of respect the women are given. You would hear the men speak about the greatness of their women. You would hear the Rebbe’s words quoted about the higher spiritual source and level of women, about the strength of Jewish women, about the vital contribution of the Jewish woman. But most of all, you would see husbands and wives working in partnership, looking at each other with respect, each doing their own part to bring more G‑dliness into this world.

Words are cheap. I just wish you could witness this lifestyle with your own eyes.

CONDESCENSION BY ANY OTHER NAME, DEMEANS WOMEN. THEY ARE THE YARD PEOPLE, YEARNING FOR A GOOD WORD FROM THE MASSAS, THE MALES.

Uhhhh yeah I don't know what to do with all this lol.

Harvey Weinstein didn't rape women because of his Jewish roots. And Epstein didn't have an island for powerful men to fuck 16 year olds because of any Jewishness.

You can still pretty much get away with anything bashing Jews, Straight White, or Asians in some cases.

How can anyone look at those two fighters and think, "Yeah, they should be evenly matched." I saw someone else post that on Twitter and someone in the comments:
"Question to all you haters- what have you ever done to be your true self? This person not only found herself against all odds but then fought on world stage."
These guys should go beat up a woman and then decide how brave that makes them. It's crazy that they're allowing this kind of stuff to happen.

Declare your jihad on thirteen enemies you cannot see -egoism, arrogance, conceit, selfishness, greed, lust, intolerance, anger, lying, cheating, gossiping and slandering. If you can master and destroy them, then you will be read to fight the enemy you can see.”

A smart man once told me that when you point a finger at some one else, then you have three pointing back at yourself.

Is that true?

Has anyone tried it?.....

I thought this was from The Onion or Babylon Bee at first. This student was upset, scared and angry because cisgender male workers were allowed into his dorm to install a radiator. Life is going to be hard and a huge shock to this delicate little flower when he leaves Oberlin and goes out into the real world.

Ohio college student 'angry' and 'scared' after 'cisgender men' installed radiator in dorms: 'Safe space'

A student at Oberlin College in Ohio described being "scared" and "angry" after the school announced a work crew would be installing radiators in a "safe space" dormitory for women and trans students, explaining the crew would likely be "cisgender men."

"I was angry, scared, and confused. Why didn’t the College complete the installation over the summer, when the building was empty? Why couldn’t they tell us precisely when the workers would be there? Why were they only notifying us the day before the installation was due to begin?" Oberlin student Peter Fray-Witzer wrote in an op-ed published in the college newspaper on Friday.

The student said he grew concerned because he had not heard of the installation plans before a school email was sent on Oct. 7. He explained that the crew would likely be cisgender men entering Baldwin Cottage, which is home to a "safe space" for "women and transgendered persons."

OBERLIN COLLEGE MEMORIAL HONORS DOZENS OF PALESTINIAN TERRORISTS

"In general, I am very averse to people entering my personal space. This anxiety was compounded by the fact that the crew would be strangers, and they were more than likely to be cisgender men."

The work crew eventually showed up at the dorm, and Fray-Witzer described that he saw "immediately that they were all men."

"It was clear that the College had not made a special request that male workers not be allowed onto the upper floors of Baldwin," the student continued.

OBERLIN 'PROFESSOR OF PEACE' CALLED FOR DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL IN 1989 SPEECH

Fray-Witzer asked a representative of the college - who he called "Polo Man" because he was wearing a "neat polo" - who accompanied the crew if he could reject getting the radiator installed. The college emissary apparently said no, and the student left for class to allow the work crew to make the dorm improvements.

"By the time I had come back, they appeared to be done, though Polo Man warned me that they would return later in the week to check the insulation. Sure enough, they were back the next day. I felt mildly violated and a little peeved."

Fray-Witzer said he asked how other students in the dorm felt about the work crew, with many complaining about messes, noise, and other typical complaints that accompany construction projects. Others noted that they didn’t feel comfortable with how the school handled the installation.

OBERLIN COLLEGE TO PAY BAKERY $11M AFTER FURTHERING RACISM ACCUSATIONS: JURY

"I understand, of course, that installations like this are routine; the College needs to improve its facilities occasionally, and who am I to stand in the way of that? After all, I get a brand-spanking-new radiator, right in time for the cold weather. But why not finish the project during the four months of the summer semester, when the building was unoccupied?"

Oberlin’s press office did not immediately respond to Fox News’s request for comment on the matter.

The op-ed has since spread on social media, with some criticizing the piece.

The whole Chappelle Netflix special (Minor spoiler or two below) has been going around for a bit. Lot of people say it's offensive, I really had no idea and figured "It's Dave Chappelle, he pretty much makes fun of everything and anything, I'm sure that's it." The thing hasn't died down yet though, and they did a protest today outside Netflix headquarters I guess with some employees walking out and other protesters and counter-protesters also getting into it.

So, I figured I should finally sit down and watch the special. I was surprised to find Dave drops a lot of truth, and yeah there's jokes, but under it all there's nothing really what I would call offensive outside of one comment about a trans lady's parts being a mutilated you know what. At the end of the show Dave told a beautiful, but tragic tale of a trans friend he had and the woman was caught in the middle for defending Dave after one of his specials aired. That person was bullied and "dragged on Twitter" which eventually lead to their suicide. Dave's comments were damning of cancel culture and people bullying others into their way of thinking, and people trying to cancel Dave have completely proven his point.

I honestly feel like many people that are critical of the "Closer" special haven't even seen it, they just know some people were outraged and they think they should be outraged too. It's entertaining, and it's more than a comedy special because it hits at some unsaid truths. I think because there is truth to it, people don't want to hear it which is why they're attacking it. It's worth a watch, go into it with an open mind if you haven't seen it yet.

Very much my take on it too. I thought he was actually rather supportive of the trans community in the special. He made a few jokes, none of them mean spirited or insulting, and made it very clear that he realizes they're just people dealing with their own struggles like all of us are. I too doubt most of those who are the most outraged have actually seen it. I think you nailed it with your "they just know some people were outraged and they think they should be outraged too" comment.

I saw Chappelle give this whole routine in Vegas back in July at the MGM Grand with Rogan and Segura. It was awesome. The people who are complaining about him need to be chained down and forced to watch Blazing Saddles at a re-education camp on repeat until they aren't whining losers.
