Lets the blow the dust off this thread...

Tyler Chatwood was signed for 3 years at $38 million. On the surface, it seems like a "meh" signing. I can't find the stats, but I read that his stat line away from Coors Field was really good. If that continues, he could obviously be a really good signing. I also read that Theo and Joe had wanted this guy for a while now. Lester-Hendricks-Q-Chatwood-?: the first 4 is pretty good, lets see who they can get for that 5th spot or could they land an arm that would be 2 or 3 in the rotation of an average pitching staff?

The big baseball news of the weekend is Stanton getting traded to the Yanks. That makes me think, would/could the Yanks even get Harper now? Stanton-Harper-Judge would be A LOT of money in the outfield. With the Stanton trade, I think that might've made the North Side a likely landing spot for Harper.

No way the could afford all of them. They are gonna need to buy some pitching. Plus Harper wants to go to the cubs.

Yankees or Cubs? Because they both will need to soon lol. Unless the Cubs start to hit on the some of the draft picks they used on pitchers, which could happen because they have drafted a lot of pitchers lately.

6 years? I am afraid of what years 4, 5, and 6 will look like when he is 35, 36, and 37.

Meh. They needed another body in the rotation. Most of the free agent pitchers left were looking for long term deals. Jake wanted more years and more money. I'm good with this. By the time year 5 and 6 roll around most decent starting pitchers are going to be making $20 million per year anyway. That seems to be the trajectory.

He also has an opt out after 2019 season, hopefully he does opt out. A.) Gets us off the hook for his older years and B.) means he pitched well enough to think he could make more on the open market again

That what I’m afraid of. Year 5 or 6 he may be Lackey.

Should be a big upgrade from Lackey. Sounds crazy but his contract seems pretty reasonable too.

Darvish essentially takes Arrieta’s place in rotation not Lackey. Arrieta has most wins in baseball over last three years and had a sub 2.5 ERA after the ASG. Excusing whatever Boras says, Arrieta will get slightly less relative to Darvish. Y’all toss your own to the curb to spend the big splash money quickly these days.

I appreciate everything Jake did. Wins like RBI are an overated, almost arbitrary stat. Anyone who has watched him for the last year and a half knows that he will never be the guy he was his Cy young year. His average fastball velocity went from 95 to around 91. Needle is pointing down on Arrieta. Darvish is an upgrade moving forward. 21 million a year is a steal. Don't worry, the Cards will sign a Holland to "big splash money" soon.

Lester,Hendricks,Quintana,Darvish,Chatwood That's a damn good rotation. Chatwood away from Coor's Field shut help his numbers come down. With that offense the Cubs are going to be tough to beat.

Spot on here. The two guys are in completely different places. Arrieta has seen his best days, and they are in the rear view mirror. Appreciate Jake immensely, but all pro sports are a business. It was time. Darvish is an upgrade without question in my mind. Not saying the guy is going to win multiple Cy Young's or anything, but man we got him at a great price. Contracts cost rarely go down, but this year they did and the Cubs landed a big fish at a steal of a price all things considered. Go Cubs Go!

I agree with all the above about Jake, this was a historically bad free agent pitching class just think Darvish can get a little overrated sometimes. I know many Rangers fans weren’t exactly crying over him leaving.

Ha with Holland I wish they would but DeWitt seems content on fielding a playoff team but not try for a championship team at the moment which is reaching a frustrating point.

Not spinning at all that Cubs should have gone for Arrieta. Just pointing out Darvish’ value if viewed in a lense of who it replaces would be relative to Jake not Lackey.

If we genuienly offered him something comparable to Darvish, as this article states, and he wasn't ready to accept the offer, then I am glad we moved on to Darvish. I understand owing him the right to a chance to resign with the Cubs, but not for the money Darvish is getting. I think Jake is on the downhill slide. Maybe I am wrong and he will prove the doubters wrong as well. But, I'd take Yu over Jake any day with comparable contracts at this point in their careers.

And like you said, he was gone once the season was over and likely before. Sounds like Boras may have gotten to his head a little.

Boras and Arrieta both should understand that only a few large-market teams are going to be able to afford the $$$ he's commanding. Soooo probably not a good idea to start telling one of the maybe 3-4 teams who can meet your asking price to pound sand.

Yu Darvish placed on 10-day disabled list with the parainfluenza virus.

SMH

Lester struggled in his first year as a Cub as well. I’m not writing Yu off just yet, but for the most part he hasn’t looked good.

Darvish has regressed every season. To expect an ERA under 4 is being optimistic in year 1. Year 2, 3, 4 will be scary and will make the Heyward deal look good.

Bundy just left the game for Baltimore with an infinite ERA: 0.0 IP, 7 ER, 1,000,000 LOLS

Wow. Just checked the box score. That might be the worst performance ever after 7 batters. Not even exaggerating. 2 walks, a single, and 4 homers allowed to the first 7 batters.

Wow. Math. Numbers.

If you want to ignore Yu's historically bad 5th innings this season fine by me, but Lester never had a stretch like that even at his worst.
