They did lose their edge. Not sure exactly why, but something needs to change. Not asking for mass head to roll, or mass turnover, but something went really wrong the last half.

I don't think being pissed at a team who lost two home games in must win situations, means fans are insufferable losers. The team shit the bed at the most crucial time. Just because we were lovable losers for so long, doesn't mean we embrace collapse.

Exactly. We pretty much have at least half the team who won the World Series two years ago. Expecting them to win one of the two at home games shouldn’t be too much to ask for. My guess was the brutal run of games at the end of the season got to everyone mentally. Instead of building to an attack mode attitude, it became more of managing and trying to survive those games rather than peaking. I know these guys are professionals but that’s asking a lot of the players and managers to handle on top of the injuries and inconsistencies in the lineup. I’d think at the end of the season you want to be playing the same 8 guys across the board and everyday we were playing a new lineup.

They have the best analytical mind in the game running their team to figure it out and try to fix it.

I said insufferable winners. The insufferable losing is past. The Cubs now are the Red Sox a few years back. There were a lot of Cub fans pissed for months while they had the best record in baseball. They won 95 games. Think about where this franchise was 5 years ago. Ten years ago.

The Cardinals have smart people running their team and they fired the idiot in the dugout. The Brewers have smart people running their team and made a run at it. It paid off. They were not going to lay over and let the Cubs run amok for a decade in the Central. This ups the stakes a bit, and if you want to poke the Theo Bear, go on. This might be just what they needed to win another championship or two.

For this fan base, it is the Golden Age of Chicago Cubs baseball. This is the most successful stretch in the club's history. They have very smart people in charge and lots of resources, i.e. money. It sucks they aren't playing in October, but from a big picture perspective, things could be and have been a hell of a lot worse.

Too many pundits got carried away after 2016 and started using the "D word" about the Cubs. It's hard to win a championship in baseball. It takes a lot of things to go right and some luck. They had some things go wrong this last month. It happens, but it doesn't necessarily have to be called a collapse or a choke.

When you blow a lead in your division because your offense took a crap, which the previous 3 years was one of the tops in baseball, that's a choke job/collapse.

I mean things happen... it makes me shake my head reading takes from fans and experts about how the 'Cubs are dying',... 'they need a rebuild'... 'the ride is over', 'it'll never be the same' blah, blah... in the age quick hit media we sure as hell get lazy. The Cubs will not be going anywhere for some time and will be one of the early fav for good reasons next season, it just didn't happen this year, end story.

Agreed, as much as it sucked to see them lose the last two games, they were still fun to watch and will be a team favored to win their division for a couple more years. As I said, I think what happened was more mental because the long stretch of games. They were in survive mode, instead of attack mode and it affected there offensive production.

Again, look at their record in the second half vs the Brewers' record in the second half. One team surged more than the other collapsed.

You choose to look at it differently. Fair enough.

By that same token, remember after they won in 2016 how much the word "Dynasty" got tossed around the first couple of weeks after. Everyone jumped the gun a bit at that time. They had a young core, had won a World Series and had one of the top farm systems in baseball. That farm system was traded off for additional pieces or graduated into the Majors.

There is a good amount of randomness involved. Even having been favored Monday and Tuesday, games like that can be viewed as a coin flip.

Something broke in their offense and has to be fixed. They have the right people there to figure out.

Gotta day after the first 7 games I didn’t have high expectations for the rest of the season, but here we are 31 games in and the Cubs are in first place after sweeping the boring ass Cardinals.

I have a co worker traveling out west this week. Saw his Cubs lose in Denver to the Rockies and saw them lose last night to the Dodgers in L.A. I think he's ready for the sales trip to be over with.

I hope Eloy Jimenez gave Epstein the middle finger as he ran the bases. What a dumb ass trade that was and that my opinion when he did it.

This team stinks and is no different that last years team. That World Series feels like it was 20 years ago. They aren't going anywhere with this team.

I’m sick of the “every team goes through a slump” narrative. This team is talented enough to do what the Astros and the Dodgers are doing this year but they continue to stall out offensively time and time again. At this point I have no idea why but yeah it feels like some moves might be in order.

So frustrating, this team is so ridiculously streaky. The hope I'm holding onto is they hit the right streak in mid-Sept and carry it into October.

Very surprised how listless this club has looked in the last week or so. Probably longer, I'd say.

And they can't win on the road? If Milwaukee make any kinds of moves for pitching help this could be brutal. The NL Wild Card race is an absolute logjam.

At this point, I'm praying for a post-break run to put the division on ice in August. Massive improvements in play of the current roster (not even talking about moves) needs to happen, unfortunately.

I am going to attempt to post in this thread and see how it goes.

Yu Darvish threw six different pitches in his first spring training start. That's crazy!

He's really worked on his arm angles and has dove into the data as well. Using old and new school methods to get his groove back.

This guy had to have been impacted by that Astros series, and knowing what we know now, maybe he's going to be able to move on mentally form all of that knowing they were doing what they were doing. His response to it was pure class, too.

Sahadev Sharma did a good piece in The Athletic the other day, which is worth every cent if you subscribe.

Really rooting for the guy.

Think so? Looks like Jed Hoyer went Ramsey Bolton on Winterfell to Wrigley Field.

Hoyer is claiming that this rebuild isn't in the same realm as the last rebuild and they will be competitive sooner than later. SMH

It’s very sad to see those guys leave, but in reality all were playing well below expectations and were going to ask for too much money. Gotta get something for them instead of letting them walk and getting nothing. We’ll see if the Ricketts are willing to spend this off-season otherwise it is full on rebuild time.

I am surprised they couldn't keep 1 of 3 in Rizzo, Bryant, or Baez....unless if 1 of those comes back next year.

The Rickettses made it pretty clear the books needed to be cleared. Looks like Jed didn't have very many options. Rizzo thought the deal he was offered was a lowball offer, Bryant was still pissed about the service time issue when he first got called up and if what Baez is reportedly asking for is true he and his shitty career OBP can go scratch. That guy Cadillacs everything he does from a home run to a soft fart. Tad overboard for my taste.

So I don't know who comes back of those three. I'm guessing Rizzo because every Theo and Jed have been (SD, BOS, CHI), Rizzo has been there too. He's their guy.

I don't think these owners are going to spend any money. It will be up to Jed to rebuild whether he likes it or not. Their saving grace is that most teams have owners that don't want to spend either. The money is there but everyone wants to be like the A's and Rays.

Rizzo will not be back, based on this interview IMO

Ricketts goes to London to try and buy a soccer team and now the Cubs are going to arbitration with Wilson Contreras over the difference between 9 and 10.25 million.
