great trade, didnt have to give up anything crazy. Candelario was nice but didnt really have a future in the cubs organization outside bench platooner.

Cubs will have to grab some young SS's in the next draft or during international signings but should be easy enough.

Window of opportunity fellas.

Put this is the other thread where this is also being dicsussed:

Bartman's statement is interesting... poor guy clearly held onto a lot and has waited for a moment to let some of it out... not that I blame him.

Very classy move, I wonder if they had that ring all along?
I remember reading articles about who was going to get a ring and there were multiple questions about Bartman and if he would get a ring too.
Glad they gave him one.

Maybe the poor guy can move on with his life now. Your fanbase destroyed this man's entire existence. Hopefully that ring is worth all of the wages, experiences and livelihood that was taken from him.

He turned down plenty of lucrative opportunities from vultures to cash in on his ill-fame too. Love how he called those creeps out. Poor guy has gone through a lot and kept his distance all these years to protect his family. I commend him for that.

I only wish they would have called out the other 4-5 idiots who made a play on the ball. All stupid attendees that don't know the game and the sad thing is, 95% of fans would do the same thing.

To this day, I don't think it ever becomes an issue if Moises Alou doesn't lose his s--t on a ball he later admitted he wouldn't have caught, or obviously the Cubs, you know, don't gag away the game.

Haven't been to Wrigley since the late 80s but am taking the wife & kids up this week. Tickets for the Nats game on Stub Hub are pricey so I'm trying to find the best value. Does anyone have recommendations on Bleacher seats, SRO, infield/outfield terrace? Any help is appreciated.

Exactly, when Alex Gonzalez booted the made to order DP, it was over. Actually it wasn't over b/c they could've won the next game....IIRC

I almost always sit in the bleachers. Best atmosphere. If you are looking to save a few bucks, let that 1st pitch fly and wait a few minutes to buy from a scalper.

I like Heyward, definitely the kind of guy you want on your team from a "team player" perspective, from a defensive stud perspective, and from a clubhouse guy one. BUT, two years into an 8 year deal, his bat is just not good. He came into the league with all kinds of potential. But, clearly he is not going to be the all-star caliber bat that he appeared to be early on, and worse, his bat has become a liability.

Saying all that, I am not sure Samardzija and Melancon are the right ones to trade for. It may be the best option out there, in which case I would vote yes. With the poor bat from Jason, it may be all we can get.

I guess part of the reason that this deal is unlikely, is that all three players mentioned have no trade clauses.

Right. I am a little unclear I guess on how "no trade clauses" work. They must not be absolute, but I wonder what would need to happen to make each guy trade-able. Do they each need to waive it?

Yes, each one would have to waive their no trade clause. Any one of them could nix the deal by not waiving their no trade clause.

Samardzija and Melancon are better fits for the Cubs current needs, even though they haven't been great lately.

I can see why Samardzija (limited NTC) and Melancon would agree to go from a last place team to the Cubs.

I don't see why Heyward would agree to such a move.

Heyward would never agree to that. He chose the Cubs to be a role player on a winning team. No motivation to move to being one of the leaders of a bad team.

I’m not salty as you can see lol.

What would the Giants be thinking here? Payroll move?

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. I have a really hard time seeing Heyward willingly letting go of the run the Cubs have been on in his time there, and the kind of organization the Cubs have become. Granted the Giants have been a winning organization as well (except last years bomb). But, seems unlikely he would agree to it. Samardzija and Melancon on the other hand, unless they have other reasons outside of baseball for wanting to stay in San Fran, I could see them pulling the trigger.

But, I wonder what the Cubbies would be thinking "big picture" here? Just needing more pitching with Arrieta and possibly Wade D gone? Or, are they also looking to free up money for other moves? Seems like we wouldn't be saving much from this article.

Not real sure, but here is a little perspective from an article on Heyward's possible move.

"As for the Giants, they have some internal solutions. Sam Dyson, who saved 38 games for the Rangers in 2016, emerged as closer while Melancon was sidelined. Samardzija is set to enter next season as San Francisco's No. 3 starter, but it has a group of starter prospects due to receive consideration next season, with former Vanderbilt star Tyler Beede the biggest name in the group.
Following a shocking 64-98 season, the Giants are expected to make major changes. It would take a ton of creativity to pull off this kind of trade, but these are two aggressive front offices."

It's both, I think. The org's lack of depth means they won't be able to do any deadline deals or assume that the minor league system can spit out reasonably OK replacements for failed or hurt pitchers. Also, a number of the young players are going to get real raises this offseason (Bryant, Hendricks, and Russell are all going to hit arbitration for the first time).

The Cubs need to bolster the bullpen and rotation which is going to be hard with Arrieta and Davis heading out the door. There's just not that much out there on the free agent market this offseason. I expect one of the young players will be moved for pitching. I would guess it is Happ.

Heywards younger brother is just starting out in the Giants organization. Even if he makes it to the majors, he is probably years away from making it. Doesn't seem like that would be much to entice him.

I don't see this happening. I'm not sure why the Giants would even want Heyward or why the Cubs would want Samardzija back. He's not good anymore. If they wanted a guy with a mid 4 ERA that gives up a ton of homers, they'd just convince Lackey to re-sign.

Samardzija has never been "good". He's been an average pitcher with enough potential upside to get people excited about the possibilities.

Good news is his control has consistently gotten better and had one of the top BB/K ratios in the league.

The bad news is that he gave up close the most home runs in the league despite pitching half of his games in pitcher friendly AT&T park. He gave up 8 home runs at home and 22 on the road.

What's more likely is the Cubs sign Yu Darvish and then make a trade for a cost controlled starter.

Trade likely involves Schwarber and Happ.

Unfortunately in today’s baseball. There is a value to someone who can take the ball and give you close to 200 innings a year, even if it’s at a 4.00+ ERA. There is simply not many out there that can eat innings still.
