pretty crazy stuff going on. Military says they have taken control of government. The government is saying they are still in control.

When I was very young, I used to think that the world was too boring. I miss that boredom.

CNN is at least reporting that it's only "a few units", which is still scary, but is at least not terrible as far as worst case scenarioes go. It looks like the military is at least allowing civilians to flee to the Asian part of the city.

Turkish military units attempt uprising, PM says - CNN.com

This is not good.

I was gonna go with this, but it seemed like the understatement of the year to me.

Did they provide reasoning? Is the military hostile to the US/symptathetic to Islamist causes?

They said something about the US policy is to not be in a country ruled by a military and not wanting to be part of the coup. They had a retired general on talking about it.

Merkel will take every person from the region except for a Democratically elected leader being over-thrown by his military. Oh the irony... enough to fill the Marianas Trench

If successful this should be good for US. The Turkish military has always been the backers of Ataturk reforms that that gave Turkey a more secular, democratic government. Erdogan has gone too far the other way becoming more authoritarian. The military is pro west and we have good relationship with them. They have always seen themselves as bulwarks against Turkey becoming an Islamic state.

This is exactly true dwshade except if the street overwhelmingly backs the AKP and creates a huge backlash against western acceptance in Turkey.

Good thing the Brits escaped the EU when they did, otherwise this would be coming to Dover in a couple of years.

Instability in the region is never good. There will be a lot of disaffected Islamists that go straight to ISIS.

That region is nothing but a powder keg and the fuse keeps getting closer to the keg.

The last couple posts fit with other reports I'm seeing on Twitter that MIT (the Turkish secret police) are resisting the military coup. That also seems to be why an attack helicopter (perhaps the one in that gif?) was shot down by a Turkish F-16.
