Going shopping for a hand gun this afternoon for myself and my girlfriend. Being I've never shot a gun before, hell even my girlfriend has more experience than I do, and after some internet research I've decided to focus my search on 38sp or +p (also a 357 with the initial us of 38 cartridges with the option for future growth), .380, and 9mm. At first I wanted a revolver, but have decided to keep my mind open. I plan on purchasing one that is small enough to eventually be my CCW gun. There is a gun shop considered to have the largest selection in the state only 30 mins away so this should give me the option to look at and hold about any option. Any favorites as far as smaller CCW guns anyone suggests? I just don't want to miss on an option.

As long as you buy premium JHP ammo, any of the major service calibers will get the job done (see below):

Handgun_gel_comparison.jpg

That said, there's a lot to recommend the 9mm: (1) highest capacity; (2) lightest recoil; and (3) availability and expense of ammunition.

Among 9s, assuming you need something that'll conceal reasonably well, I'd strongly recommend a Gen4 Glock G19. If Glock's not your thing, an M&P9c would also be good choice.

Another thing to consider is price. A new Glock is gonna make a sizeable dent in your wallet compared to several other brands. I personally dislike the feel of Glocks; kinda like holding a brick. My carry is a Kahr CW9 that I absolutely love. Shoots like a ****ing dream and the trigger pull is, in my opinion, unmatched. On top of all the obvious things to consider you may want to check about obtaining your CHL with a wheel gun if you go that route. Here in Texas if you take your class with one you can only carry a revolver. However, if you use a pistol you're able to carry either a pistol OR a revolver. Best advice is, as mentioned already, shoot. Shoot any gun before you buy it and you'll be happy with your purchase.

Most of the worthwhile polymer semi-auto pistols are gonna set you back about $500 new (Kahr included). And with the current gun regulation scare, going used isn't going to save you much money either.

I picked up my Sig SP2022 in 9mm in late summer/fall for ~$480 with night sights installed. Trigger is incredible and it's just an over all great gun. I haven't looked at prices recently, but I can't imagine it went up that much.

My wife has a Kahr CW9. I personally don't like the length of the trigger pull. I have larger hands so I can't shoot it as easily as other guns but my wife is a killer shot with it. Other than that it is great.

P.S. I ran into a guy at the gunsmith's a last weekend and he had a Kahr CW9 and loved it.

I LOVE the length of the trigger pull. My concern was having large hands as well but I wanted something small and single stack. I shoot great with it and it's easily concealable.

As far as size and construction it is a great carry gun. Its just like shooting a revolver though. I like my triggers short and light. :wordyo:

After the research I headed out to shop and held several different guns, even some that I was really researching originally. There isn't anywhere local that had an option to shoot before you buy, so I visited several dealers. I settled on a few different revolvers that I felt comfortable holding and that would feel comfortable to carry and easy to conceal. The last store I visited happened to have a 'used' one that I had been researching for about 80% of the cost of new. I decided to purchase it then and there as it was the one I felt most comfortable holding. Best part was is it was labelled used, but it was actually new in the box, the box was just open. The only round that had been thru it was the factory test fire.

Not pictures I took, but pics of the same gun

Quality piece-congrats. Ruger has always overengineered their pieces-they are known for their toughness and durability. With that hammerless design, that's practically a pocket gun.

Bottom line: If your happy, then we're happy!

The LCR is a very nice gun. I am seriously debating picking one up. I had one in my hands at a gun show a couple of weeks ago and it was very hard to put down and walk away from. Let us know what you think of it when you get to shoot it.

maybe because I'm bored and like a challenge, I decided to start putting together a German Mauser K98. I have never tried anything like this before but getting the parts (even though I am looking only for vintage German parts, Waffen-stamped where possible) has been a fun search.

However, I am wondering if any of you has knowledge on the German Mauser circa 1937-1945. The barrel I got has the rear sight mount, but no sight. A sight is easy enough to find but I bought a rear sight ramp because I thought i needed it. It appears I do not need a ramp since the sight mount is still there and only need a spring. If any of you has a K98, or knows someone who does, can you look at it and tell me if the rear sight ramp is unneeded if the sight base is on the barrel?

I know this doesn't exactly apply, but... I just ordered some new threads for my bow. Had to go ND themed obviously. I'll take some pictures of it they're on.

Nice! I wanna deck out the Reezen and get the colored dampers, but they don't have gold. I may go blue and green. Looking forward to the pics!

Hey did you get a buck last fall?

Thanks! I love em. Can't wait to get shooting with them. The stock string was so bad on my Stinger that I had to adjust the peep every 10 shots or so.

I didn't get one this year. It was a really weird fall and winter up here. Not a whole lot of movement on the lease. Hoping to get out and get some gobblers, but not sure I'll be able to afford it. I have to pay for stuff to finish school instead. Sucks.

Go with a tubeless peep if you haven't yet. G5 makes a good one. If you have a tubeless peep and keep needing to adjust it, you probably need another twist or two in your string. It's easy to do if you have a press, if not, go have someone do it in a shop.

I've had the G5 for a while now, but the strings that came stock on my PSE were just garbage. They stretched a lot and wouldn't stay in rotation. I put on the new strings, but there is a weird twist of the threads coming out of the serving into the yoke. The company I ordered them from is sending me a new cable cause it isn't right. Should be here by Wednesday. I should be tuning the bow by Thursday evening. Can't wait.

Where did you order the strings from? Winner's Choice are top notch, but there are a lot of guys on archerytalk.com that make sets just as good for half the price.

Got em from Proline. I have heard some poor things about WC since they started to mass produce things. Prolines customer service and quality was awesome though. I posted in the Proline thread on AT about the twisted yoke and the owner of the company PMd me asking my info so he could get me a new cable out on Monday along with some extra blue serving and d-loop/drop away tie in for free. I'd recommend em.

What do you shoot?

Never tried Proline, but have heard great things.

My hunting rig is a Mathews DXT with Bucknasty strings. Had the set on there for about 4 years and it is still holding strong. Love the DXT so much, I haven't been tempted to get a new one just yet.

I also have a Limbsaver Deadzone and PSE Bowmadness I bought cheap on AT to let friends shoot when we go to the range.

*I've been getting into Trad lately and picked up an old Fred Bear recurve, its fun to shoot.

Re: strings-head to Acherytalk forum and there are a TON of folks who make customized quality strings-in whatever color combo you would want.

Re: tubeless peeps-I have used them in the past but still, any rotation is irritating. I started to go peepless and shot with an anchorsight. Works well once you have it tuned and sighted in.

Someone please kill some gobblers and post the pics! Out here, nada in terms of hunting, although living on the 27th floor apartment has not stopped me from practicing my turkey calling on the balcony-can't believe nobody has complained yet.

I'm in the market for a new 12 gauge. Anyone have any experience behind a Benelli pump (Nova or Supernova)? It'll be used for an all purpose hunter; deer, turkey, waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit, etc. Thoughts?

Also, I just realized I never posted photos of the strings on the bow.

Also had these made.

I tried to fire a gun once ...

But the head of Human Resources said I couldn't. She said something about second amendment protection.

As far as 12 gauge i went with the Mossberg 590A1, with a surefire however it is more for home defense (18 barrel).

Absolutely amazing shotguns. My brother just bought a Nova after spending many months researching and considering many shotguns. If you're going for a pump instead of an auto-loader, then you're really mostly considering the Remington 870, Mossberg 500 series and the Benelli's.

The Benelli Nova comes standard with 3 chokes and accepts all shell sizes up to and including 3.5". The only difference between the Nova and the SuperNova is the mercury recoil reduction system, which from our research, is only really necessary if you're going goose hunting and are bucking lots of 3.5" like a flak cannon, but it does reduce recoil for lesser loads as well. You can always add it to a Nova for $90 (the difference in price is usually around $100). Great for everything you'd ever want to shoot with a shotgun.

The Remington has more after-market tacticool parts. The Mossberg is less expensive.

Only complaint would be that the official Benelli mag tube extension is expensive, but there are cheaper after-market ones available.

We went with the 28" barrel and will probably get a 18" barreled Mossberg for home defense, rather than get another barrel for the Benelli.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

anyone have any experience or knowledge of the magnum research baby eagle II 40 semi-compact? I've held one once and it felt like it was absolutely made for my hand. I did not get to fire it though.
