Going shopping for a hand gun this afternoon for myself and my girlfriend. Being I've never shot a gun before, hell even my girlfriend has more experience than I do, and after some internet research I've decided to focus my search on 38sp or +p (also a 357 with the initial us of 38 cartridges with the option for future growth), .380, and 9mm. At first I wanted a revolver, but have decided to keep my mind open. I plan on purchasing one that is small enough to eventually be my CCW gun. There is a gun shop considered to have the largest selection in the state only 30 mins away so this should give me the option to look at and hold about any option. Any favorites as far as smaller CCW guns anyone suggests? I just don't want to miss on an option.
As long as you buy premium JHP ammo, any of the major service calibers will get the job done (see below):
That said, there's a lot to recommend the 9mm: (1) highest capacity; (2) lightest recoil; and (3) availability and expense of ammunition.
Among 9s, assuming you need something that'll conceal reasonably well, I'd strongly recommend a Gen4 Glock G19. If Glock's not your thing, an M&P9c would also be good choice.
