I don't know the answer to my question... I'm asking to learn, but how much of Jimbo's recruiting skills translate to today's NIL world? Would he still be able to pull in top 5 classes or have things changed so much that he'd be lost at how to deal with the new world order?

Good question. He didn't exactly deal well with A&M's departing recruits towards the end, it was like a mass exodus. Maybe he learned some lessons, but he couldn't retain and who knows if he can play the transfer portal.

The flip side is if you could get Florida State running at even 80 percent of their potential, they’d be in the top tier of the ACC.
In that sad-ass conference, Jimbo wouldn’t need to build an elite roster to at least be in the playoff conversation most years. He would just need to execute with the guys they get.

This is right. He'd get them to a respectable record in the ACC. The money stuff is from the stupid funding they went through for the football facility and that firing Norvell + his assistants is something like $90-100 million.

Once they rip the bandaid off, they'll be able to fund a competitively talented team.

Clemson is a perfect fit for Kelly.
Their lack of NIL is a built in excuse to not work hard and the ACC is so bad he can still cruise to 8-9 wins every year.

Steven Godfrey confirmed Brian Kelly is the current lead candidate for Rutgers

“They are selling the Irish Catholic ND success, do not look at the LSU”

BK is welcome to recruit the ND rejects from NJ and PA.

I could see him doing a half decent job there.

People will talk shit but honestly that's a great hire for Rutgers IF Kelly is motivated to work and win.

Genuinely don't understand why he won't just retire though. He's got multi-generational wealth. Can't imagine putting in hours for Rutgers football knowing I could be traveling around the world.

He wasn’t even that bad at LSU, had a 71% win percentage while in the SEC, that’s 9-4 a year. He gets a lot of shit because he comes off as a square, but imo he could aim higher. I thought Michigan State would have made a lot of sense, Can’t tell me he’s a worse option than Pat Fitzgerald.

I think he’d be a disaster at Rutgers. It’s a very hard job and one I think you have to be willing to recruit your ass off to succeed at. That’s very much not in BKs DNA.

Don’t think it’ll ever happen but I think he’d be great at a place like Liberty where the school is way outspending everyone else on the block, but hasn’t managed to put it all together.

Also if he takes the Rutgers job and does a pep rally where he talks like he’s on the Sopranos I feel like it causes a 180 on his public perception

LSU still owes him more than $45M, but he has to be making a reasonable effort to land a head coaching job to offset some or most of that buyout in order to collect from LSU. He's wealthy, but not wealthy enough to leave that on the table.

It would be an excellent hire for them.

He's a competitor. Competitors prefer the excitement and challenge.

Rutgers has played football longer than any other college in America. What do they have to show for it? ONE conference co-championship they shared with 3 other teams in an 8 team conference. They are never going to win anything unless Wall St collectively decides to give them $50m a year. Even then, NJ is so corrupt, $45m of it will go missing.

It's really kind of wild how consistently bad they are. They've finished a season ranked one time since 1976. Schiano's first run in the 2000s was the only time they've put together winning records. And this is despite being in one of the stronger high school football states in the country. You could put together a pretty strong all-time team of ND players from New Jersey.

The athletic department seems pretty dysfunctional (are they good at ANY sports? I can't think of one.) But even other perennially crappy teams like Kansas or Indiana will occasionally go on a heater. What exactly is the problem there?

I grew up there. NO ONE ever grew up wanting to play for Rutgers. It's never even a thought. The school has never really tried either. NJ is either for Penn St or Notre Dame. That's it. Most kids leave the state to go to college. They head south. I did.

Yeah, it's kind of wild. NJ is probably a top 10 state in terms of producing good high school football players. Then they all seem to go to Penn State, Notre Dame, Michigan, SEC schools, even BC. But never Rutgers. Trying to remember the last NJ kid we recruited where they were a significant factor...

Rutgers went 11-0 in 1976 as an independent and finished 17th in the AP. Good Lord, that's depressing.

They've had two double digit win seasons ever.
