They are hiring South Dakota State’s Jimmy Roger’s.
He's a former SDSU player and has spent his entire coaching career there outside of one year at FAU as a GA. He's 37 years old.

There is some risk/reward for sure but he's without question on the fast track. Born and raised in Arizona. Maybe he has his sights set on one of those as a destination job?

I thought you had to be a friend of McVay to get a HC job that young 😂

Jumping around your first few years is pretty normal. Then mostly looks he got promoted at a couple of programs, including by Freeman at Cincy.
What I don’t get is how he got the job at Bama? What would’ve qualified him for that?

Edit: I see it. He worked for Kane Wommack, Bama’s actual DC, at South Alabama a few years back. Nepo hire/hiring who you know. Either way I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s working for us next season.

He's 38 years young. He's not bouncing around from program to program so much as he's been moving around in terms of title/responsibility.

Sounds like the firing had a lot to do with off field stuff.
I live in Boston, have never heard anything untoward about Mayo off the field - he's generally seen as a class act - but there was a definite sense that he lost the locker room, mishandled the QB situation, etc. Just inexperienced. And the team kind of gave up in some ugly losses toward the end of the season.
Still. I think this is a situation where they think they'll get Vrabel and he's a clear upgrade, so they pulled the trigger on Mayo. Otherwise you give the guy another year at least.

I think it was a lot having to do with some of his media command?

Pressers were awkward, even uncomfortable? There was the quote about cap space where he mentioned "burning some cash."

IDK. If Robert Kraft is still owner, I hope they suck.

Yeah he definitely said some things in press conferences that didn't go over well. Nothing scandalous, just inexperience on that stage.
Kraft, who's very sentimental, has loved Mayo for years. Hired him without even doing a real search. I guess realized his mistake. But it's pretty shitty to hire a guy, give him a weak roster and no resources, and then can him. I'm not a Kraft fan either.

Zero disagreements. One and done typically fall on the people doing the hiring as far as I'm concerned. Mayo seems like a good enough guy.
Sentimental hires are for fans.

This was seen as an absolute coup last year. Just goes to show the most popular moves aren’t always right.
I seem to recall a lot of people out here wanting ND to break the bank for him. He and Ludwig are both out of a job, ND is playing in the semifinal of a 12 team playoff.

I'd be lying if I said it is all enough to make me smile.

I'm sure he is going to end up back as an OC somewhere before too long. Maybe college suits him better.

Oh I was even talking about some NFL guys thinking this was an amazing hire for Seattle. Now fans have the same complaints about him as they did Waldron.

You're right though, Grubb will find something in CFB, maybe even back with DeBoer. But shoot if he doesn't find anything, bring him on as an analyst for a year and let him help out the WR room.
