He's been in the job for 11 years. I can't imagine Wake is super competitive in the new world order. Maybe just time for a change?
I mean, he won coach of the year in the ACC just a few years ago. Us taking Hartman really killed his love of the game?

Always had a good deal of respect for what Clawson did at Wake.

Chuck Martin?

Monken would also make a sense, timing wise in particular.

For sure. He may simply have done what he can do. What worked even a few years ago has gotten a lot harder. They are the smallest school in P4, with real academic standards, and kind of a basketball school to boot. Real hard to compete for players in this day and age.

I get that it's just New Mexico, but Bronco Mendenhall seems to really jump around a lot. Between the abrupt retirement at UVA, then coming back after 2 seasons away, and now leaving UNM after a single season for Utah State?
Can't say.

He's 58 years old. Played at Oregon State and had been at BYU for a long time. Maybe he wanted something different. He never had a losing season there.
He's a Mormon. That's probably the biggest reason to go to USU

Brennan Marion is a rising star in the coaching ranks. He's going to try to parlay this into something bigger, obviously, but it's a bold move. You'd think there would have been some FBS traction out there for him.

He apparently has rubbed some in the field the wrong way. Rumor was he was behind the whole Sluka UNLV QB drama.

Memphis' Ryan Silverfield won 11 games this year and 10 last year. He's won 4 straight bowl games. He's coached with the Vikings and Lions in The League prior to joining the staff at Memphis as an assistant before becoming head coach.

Have to wonder if he's going to start getting some looks next year if he hasn't already. Unless he's absolutely content at Memphis.

Wonder if Deland's coaching career ends up like Tony Alford's. Starting to seem that way

you cant expect a HC job without being a coordinator (for the most part). Problem for these guys being a P4 position coach more prestige than a G5 coordinator (and pay)

It can be done. Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, PJ Fleck, Dabo Swinney, Ed Orgeron all did it. Four of those five won National Championships. Two were hired by MAC schools.

I would guess two MAC coaches make more than Deland does right now. Candle and Lance Taylor. P4 coordinators are into five figure/two comma salaries now too. MAC schools and some of the other G5 programs have to get creative with their hires. I'm somewhat surprised more FCS head coaches don't get opportunities. Curt Cignetti is a perfect example of this.

It likely isn't about the money if he wants to run his own program. His age and race lend itself to him having more limited options along with no OC experience. There were 16 Black HC going into this season and two (Walters and Drayton) were fired.

The longest tenured MAC coaches are Creighton and Martin. Both hired in 2014. People either get fired or move on from those gigs.

Ohio U is a good gig. It makes sense for him to interview for that one. He probably won't want to go near Kent State or Akron. Bowling Green, NIU have enjoyed success in recent years. You don't want to regionally pigeonhole coaches, but his career has been spent in the Midwest more than anywhere else.

So much of this is about timing for both the school and the candidate. Deland has coached in the League and has had a very good run as an assistant. He would be able to put together a staff and delegate pretty well. It's a matter of the right opportunity coming along at the right time.

I think Saban should make a comeback in the ACC and go up against BB. Maybe take the other Carolina team HC job.

lol this school has never really been that good at football. Jackson was always an arrogant, selfish person. This is another publicly stunt to get attention to a school.

It is very silly. Basically a non-schollie program

Washington State is the only current FBS HC opening. Multiple OC and DC openings yet to be filled.
